The funny thing about PC Engine was that it was firmly in word-of-mouth territory -- there was no internet obviously, but we live in HK and don't read Chinese so we also had no game magazines or ads or anything like that, any knowledge of games we had just spread organically through family and friends.

If you was in HK around the early 90's was you buying your games in the huge Japanese department stores in Causeway Bay? There were other hidden shops and mini malls around Kowloon City and Mong Kok areas that just specialised in video games and pc stuff. Possibly around the mega shopping zones in Sha Tin areas too iirc back in the day..

I was visiting Hong Kong in 92" and definitely picked up games like Devil Crush and Jigoki Meguri at some hidden shopping mall in Kowloon City when the airplanes used to fly dangerously low to land in the airport runway some several hundred meters away!

But considering it wasn't going to be translated, I don't feel too upset when Salamander is on the US version instead. Sure, it still gives this "incomplete" feeling, but it's not like I'm gonna get far into Snatcher unless I can hack the mini & put an English translation on it.

Am hoping somewhere in the not too distant future someone will translate it.

is there any reason the english version of Snatcher has never been ported to anything?
Kojima hated the localization, maybe that's why? I always got the feeling he might've stood in the way generally for Snatcher and Policenauts reissues, with his rise to fame alongside MGS you'd have thought Konami saw an opportunity with his older titles on systems like PS2, DS, PSP, etc?

Nah, never from department stores or "official" places like that — I'm a Kowloon boy, so we did all our shopping in Golden. The games were available for sure, just... Bomberman didn't register with my family, and I don't remember the shops well enough to know if they were playing/pushing Bomberman on people. (My family is fluent in Cantonese but can't read, so whatever local magazines did or did not exist would have been useless.)

But I think I know the shops you're talking about! On Lion Rock Road, ironically much closer to my house than Golden but I didn't discover it until the PS1 era.

Sometimes I look at ESRB ratings for fun (which shows how boring I am lol) but here's the rating for the TurboGrafx-16 Mini (which is rated M for Mature):

"This is a collection of Turbo Grafx-16 titles that include platformers, shooters, role-playing games, and visual novels. Most games contain moderate violence involving cartoony weapons or players punching/kicking enemies. One game depicts several murder crime scenes with corpses lying in pools of blood; a dog is also briefly shown with exposed entrails. A handful of cutscenes contain more intense instances of violence: a character's arm ripped off; a man's head exploding into blood and bits of flesh; a robot's face melting off. A handful of sequences depict female characters with exposed breasts and buttocks."

- ESRB https://www.esrb.org/ratings/36613/TurboGrafx-16+mini/

Is it safe to say that that's all Snatcher? I don't remember a character's arm being ripped off in the game... But if so, then the only reason why the system is rated M is because of the untranslated Japanese visual novel, which honestly I think it's impressive that Konami is bundling Snatcher with the system despite it being the sole reason why the system is rated M.

If i am not mistaken there is no coryoon or magical chase ...

At first i wondered why some great games were missing, then i looked at surugaya and saw the second hand price of those games...
Coryoon goes for $520
Magical Chase goes for $570
There's some lobbying behind the scene to not include expansive second hand games i believe ;)

It's crazy to me that the PC port of Magical Chase goes for lower despite having perhaps 1/100th of the production run.

for TM there is no nostalgia (japanese expatriates who were 17 when they played it first time... not a big market ;) ).
Are you joking? Why would they care what game resellers want? Besides this would have little to no impact on real game values as the PCE collectors are arguably the most insane of them all.

Konami doesn't benefit from aftermarket sellers anyways. They don't get any money from second hand sales of games no longer doing print runs or in regular circulation.

If Konami remotely cared for the whims for the the PCE collector aftermarket scene. Then games like Aldynes or Sapphire wouldn't be included.

Of course i was joking :) It was my way to lament at the absence of these gems.
(but i was genuine about my surprise that the PC version goes for less ).

Honest to god, as someone who hasn't seen much of Snatcher and is planning to go in blind with this version (with the Japanese I know), I had no idea a game from the PCE could be so violent. Sounds very unusual, but kinda cool too. Usually if it was a violent game back then, it was a MK clone or something. But Snatcher's a VN so I was surprised to see that.

Any other UKera struggling with the PC Engine vs Coregrafx decision?

So many hours poring over the classic white machine in Mean Machines.

So it comes down to white case nostalgia + import hassle/cost vs Salamander!

I'll keep my Coregrafx pre-order for now I think - does anybody know if all individual second controllers are white (as per the Amazon photo)?

Actually, I remember reading that the PC Engine version of the game is the most violent of all six Snatcher versions. All other versions after it had some censoring, with the PlayStation version being cut back the most by far.

But yeah, I can agree that in a way it's cool, in the sense that pixel art gore has a really unique look. I first played Snatcher a few years ago, and its 16-bit pixel art graphics were incredibly unsettling to me in a way that they wouldn't have been if they were more realistic.

Yeah I have more nostalgia for the white PCE, but not so much I'd spend more importing it.

The Coregrafx is still a looker.

Ugh, sure hope they go back in stock. I was tempted as I would like to try a bunch of these games & I like owning mini consoles, but it's coming out when there's just so much other stuff taking up my time & money. Really hope this doesn't become rare.

Ah well, I made an order. I was tempted to get the Neo-Geo Pro as well but one retro console will do for now. I haven't played everything on the Megadrive Mini yet even.

I am sure more pre order stock will be available as some people cancel orders but now I'm worried my hope in waiting for this to drop in price was a bad idea? Can't imagine there will be only one production run but bet the manufacturing situation in China will limit stock for a while.

I'm still betting it will. Should be $50 eventually I think. that's why i havent bitten yet.

UNLESS they dont produce many, which I guess is possible.

We are about two weeks away... will it be at my door on the 20th or is that just an approximate ship date.

Does anyone think it will be delayed?

Does anyone's Amazon order have a delivery date yet? I ordered in July which I would think was early enough and were close enough to release where I think I should be seeing something.

The TG16 was somewhat niche of a niche in terms of console releases. It had moderately more success as the PCE in Japan than Western territories. So the TG16 mini might more likely to be discounted as opposed to the Core Mini or PCE Mini since it's more likely to be less appealing for those that don't have much nostalgia for it.

I don't think a price drop is as likely much along the lines of the PS Classic though.

One thing to take into consideration is M2 is behind the emulation so it won't ever have performance issues like the PSX Classic did.

The biggest issue behind product scarcity and the I reason I believe it has less chance for a price drop as opposed to the other mini consoles is the fact it is sold exclusively through Amazon.

Maybe Amazon will heavily discount it on one of their Treasure Truck tours eventually. Also because it's exclusive to Amazon, I wouldn't be surprised aftermarket scalpers are taking advantage of this to sell units off Amazon at a higher markup.

I'm thinking about cancelling my pre-order. I have no nostalgia for the system and just realised (thanks to the Sega Lord X video) how many shmups are included. A genre I'm not terribly interested in. On top of that the game that looks the most interesting to me is a story-focused adventure game, that's only available in Japanese. Yeah, not sure, if the rest of the games justify the comparably high price for me personally.

Huh? No, that can't be right. I read the Japanese in that which seemed to noted if you bought it before the 6th of march you'd get your system, otherwise you'd have to wait until after the expected date due to newer systems grinding to a halt in production.

EDIT: US/EU models are apparently delayed due to this thing? Despite being made months ago? I'm gonna get this no matter what it takes, even if I have to spend $300 importing a PCE from a scalper while the US one takes its sweet time to get out.

I've had mine pre-ordered since July of last year.

I wonder if they aren't going to allocate what produced systems they have on a first come, first served basis and are doing a worldwide delay overall? While I'm somewhat disappointed, I'm kind of relieved as well. Money was getting tight this month with Animal Crossing almost coming out the same time.

If anyone is wondering, yes, this is legitimate. And now I wonder whether the recent "sold out on Amazon" frenzy has anything to do with this.

Totally not worried if not, people's health comes first, but if I get one I'll be pleasently surprised.

So apparently anyone who pre-ordered before March 5 2020 will still get it on March 19 as planned.
Anyone who only preoders now, will still get it, but with a delay.

For those who pre-ordered "PC Engine mini" by March 5, 2020, the product will be delivered on March 19, 2020. If you purchased TurboGrafx-16 mini, PC Engine Core Grafx mini, and peripheral devices Turbo Pad for PC Engine mini, Multi-Tap for PC Engine mini, or Multi-Tap for PC Engine mini, For those who pre-ordered "PC Engine mini" on or after March 6, 2020, it will be delivered on or after March 20, 2020. Stay tuned for more information, as we will share more details.

EDIT: Pack it up, boys and girls. All consoles are delayed, even for people who pre-ordered last year... :/

I think this explains the console going out of stock on amazon last week. Obviously they were notified of the production delays ahead of time and just stopped the ability to pre order.

In case anyone wanted to pre order, it is up at amazon again in the US. Figured I would at least stake a claim to be safe.

I still find it amazing that these were not ready and packaged a few weeks ago... in a warehouse ready to ship. With review ready packages sent to multiple sites and reviewers.

Just to clarify, the only software differences between the TG16/Core and PCE versions are Salamander in the former and Tokimeki Memorial+Tengai Makyou 2 in the latter? As well as slightly different versions of Splatterhouse in each? I was surprised to read that apparently the actual game languages don't differ at all between versions of the Mini, assuming I read that right.

"Few weeks ago"? How far back is a few weeks?
Chinese factories have been on lockdown since the New Year. The back log of things to be produced must be insane and I doubt these mini consoles are front of the queue.
