I can recognize and respect his contributions to music for what they are, but to be honest, I was never a fan of most of it. Dragon Quest VIII is the only time I "felt" his vibe. Maybe it was because it was the first DQ I really liked?
Personal politics aside, he's also been running on fumes for years now. I don't know if this is disrespectful to say, but I'm glad that this means new blood will get to compose for DQ games.

In lieue of saying something mean about someone recently deceased, I will say that his mark on video game music will remain forever. Really expanded the notion of VG music as not just art, but as an event to be listened and enjoyed even separately from the game it is from.

I do disagree with the people in this thread who say his music was bad though. The DQ theme is iconic, and there are plenty of other good songs that he has written. I feel the same way about Jeremy Soule. They both fucking suck, but I'm not going to pretend they didn't write good music.
There are some genuinely fantastic music here and there but yeah overall the quality is pretty average as far as JRPG franchise goes. Anyway, fuck Sugiyama, the world is better without him.

It's one thing to have shit views, it's another thing to go out of way to use your wealth and platform to actively fund causes that kick people while they're down. Legacy is what it is, the good and bad of what you did in life. He just isn't going to only be remembered for his music.

I like the big DQ themes (overused as they may be), but the dude sucked hardcore and it's clearly better for everyone that he isn't around anymore.
