What the fuck. I saw this anime with high rating and said why not, went in blind. I've heard of it before and wanted to check out what the fuss was about couple years back. I'm going to avoid adding images because, oh boy are they super NSFW.
My god, what is up with all this perv imagery? To make it worse, from the three epsidoes I watched, there were so many rape implications and sexual harassment of these underage girls. Oof man, not a good look.
Apart from those, it felt so brain dead and so in your face. Let me breathe and take in what's actually happening.
Was this made from a wet dream or something?

It did have really good animation though, but what a waste.

Honestly I feel like the public discourse for the sexualization of minors, rape jokes, etc. was waaaaaaaay different in anime fandom in 2013 than it is now, maybe that's just the bad circles I was in but this show was seen as racy but acceptable at the time. If it came out today I can see it being received very differently.

Imaishi's work usually has elements of this but KLK really went full damn throttle. Promare is a bit more reigned in... but it's also a movie and not a late night anime.

Kill la Kill is a send up of the kind of insipid fanservice that pervades most otaku-bait anime by dialing it way the hell up to 11 (and beyond) and being pretty equal opportunity about it, all things considered, to the point that it completely desensitizes the whole thing.

Like go watch a show like Val × Love (or don't, I seriously wouldn't recommend it, I only know it because it was on TV when I was in Japan and hoo boy!) and then compare that to Kill la Kill, and it's pretty clear they're going for very different things despite both being overtly sexual in nature.

No, but there is some stuff worthy of discussion which came from that series. And yeah you also don't get the jokes and references in this thread which is why you also didn't understand anything at all in my post . It's just people don't really know how to use the word cringe. It's not for everyone and that is fine. Starting from the mid series it also has some great stuff and amazing animation and soundtracks so there is that too.

I still really liked it. It's absolutely creepy fanservice justified by a metanarrative about shame and virtue and objectifying women. (see that proZD link above, kinda nails it) I definitely wish it wasn't quite so complacent about the actual sexualisation of minors. But for me, a story that doesn't treat women as untouchable (-save for the trope of threatening sexual violence), means more to me than not having fanservice. And yeah I think if you got a lot further in you'd start to see the shift in tone that other fans liked about it. The metanarrative about socialised womanhood really stuck for me, and the over-the-top stylish action was pretty fresh. But don't force yourself to like it. It's not for everyone.
It also helps to not be a straight guy I guess? I think i'd feel more self-conscious about people thinking I was a pedo for watching if I was.

like the OP I was unable to make it very far in this. I had a negative physical reaction to it. Sort of like tensing up, my shoulders and hands, can't quite think of the word for it

It started off wildly entertaining with how they implemented intentionally cheap animation but ended with incest rape. And yet its still super popular and has videogames and everything *shrug*

It's definitely an anime that requires you to already be knee deep in anime bullshit to like. I really liked it but it's perfectly understandable why others don't.

I'm not going to claim the fanservice has any deep meaning or reason (cause it really doesn't), however there are some good messages (completely unrelated to sexuality) in there that I did enjoy.

Just google'ing the name of the series and seeing the designs you can already see how all the recomendations about "satire" and "deconstruction" are just bullshit and it's another anime case of taking the cake and eating it. I swear some fans aren't aware on how stupid this looks for non anime fans.

I'd sooner call it parody rather than a deconstruction. It doesn't really go against the grain, just accentuates and exaggerates the hell out of it. Which is ok if you're into that, but at the end of the day it IS still fanservice. And there's nothing wrong with liking the show as a whole while knowing it's not justified.

I enjoyed the show and its crazy style. Not gonna pretend the fanservice is okay, but as an avid anime watcher I'm a bit desensitized. The show isn't for everyone, but it is for me.

Mako really made the show for me. She's so much fun.

This is somewhat true. But it's also true that KLK fails at that mission to an extent, because it tries to have its cake and eat it. The show would be a lot better if it committed to an attitude of casual nudity rather than falling into the same old tropes and camera angles it's trying to criticise half the time.

At one point the show decides that it's only got about 60 seconds to make you despise Satsuki's mum so they use that time to show that she sexually abuses Satsuki

I found that it has value, but as I mentioned above it's heavily weighed down by not being able to fully escape it's own existence as an anime which muddles the message. Whether or not you think you can get past that or if it's even worth it isn't something anyone else can tell you.

Seeing this video going around in lefty spaces and knowing Hbomb likes the show has made me want to reconsider and watch it but like.. I've seen the images, I've seen the gifs.. do I really want to? Can it really be worth it. I still haven't got down to it and I don't know if I actually will, but I at least assume there's some sort of value in it if these are the spaces receiving it positively.

It was different. Definitely not my favourite Hiroyuki Imaishi animation, but it was ok. The fanservice was off the charts. I think the only think I liked about it was the sometimes goofy animation.

Much prefer Panty and Stocking, FLCL and Gurren Lagann.

There is more to it, it dives deeper into a lot of social and political issues, but it also has a lot of fanservice of underaged characters for the sake of titillation. So, eh.

Quite frankly, I didn't like it that much. Too much fanservice, too much nonsense and too in your face in a way that was just obnoxious. But it does have its good parts too. I enjoyed the later half way more.

Kill la Kill is a super problematic show that is also adventurous in its commentary and ridiculously entertaining throughout. It's all three at once, as far as I'm concerned.

It's hilarious, it has great fights/action, and it's absurdly pervy, what's not to love! Not for everyone but it's one of my favorite anime. Mako alone makes the show worth watching.

Kill la Kill saved the anime, so we should be grateful on Trigger and on the existence of this masterpiece.
It was alright with a great message on the end, but it was worth it for all the hype and memes around the series

I don't know why because usually I can't stand creepy anime shit but I loved this show. I think it's because the sexual content feels kind of more positive than negative and is not the usual shit like the sex offender with a heart of gold or having the entire reason for female characters to exist is to be sexualised.

Having incredible animation did help a lot too.
