He's spot on. Rey, Finn and Poe don't feel like a trio at all, and Rey is the only one that feels important.

Yes, he was completely wasted in TLJ after being one of the brightest spots of TFA - and I DEFINITELY agree that he should have been force sensitive. He also should've been a/the love interest for Rey since he is pretty clearly into her but of course he gets shipped off with Rose with whom he has no chemistry at all all because they... hopped across a casino planet together?

Finn and Poe went from likeable into TFA to utterly boring and me not wanting to spend another second with their pointless B+C plots.

Sad to hear he was as disappointed as many fans were.

The story of a slave Stormtrooper escaping and become a Jedi would have been great to see.

Finn could have been absolutely amazing.

They literally could have taken his character in any direction when they put him to bed at the end of TFA.

Instead they went with the age old slapsticky sidekick with heart, which is safe but literally billions of people have seen that already.

I mean the only team was Rey and Finn, and their team-up paused when Finn got put into the ER and Rey went off to find Luke. All that happened before TLJ, you know? So them being necessarially separated kept with the flow of the end of E7.

Yeah I certainly wish we had Finn take on a larger part of the story then he currently has. I said this in one of the other threads but I loved the main cast of characters we got in TFA (finn, rey, kylo, poe) and wish we had gotten more stories with their adventures that were more divorced from the shackles of the OT. Hoping Finn has more of an active role in the last movie at least.

Sad to hear he was as disappointed as many fans were.

The story of a slave Stormtrooper escaping and become a Jedi would have been great to see.

I love TLJ, but Johnson fucked up with Finn. Really bums me out. He was easily my favourite in TFA.

Yeah, I'm not really a big Star Wars fan but I was intrigued by Finn so I watched The Force Awakens and wasn't a fan of the way they did a fake out with his importance in the movie. Then the Last Jedi just made him a comic relief. I'm not remotely interested in seeing the new one now.

While I like TLJ, the one bit of criticism I feel is warranted is how the new team doesn't feel like friends. I get why Rey had to have her alone time with Luke and develop her relationship with Kylo Ren, but Finn and Poe should have taken that time to go on an adventure together. I have no idea how to handle the divergent storylines of Poe's and Finn's quests then, but I'd have still liked to see them so they could be friends.

TFA made him a janitor
Luke was a farmer, and Finn was an actual (trained from birth) solider, despite working in maintenance (see: the beginning of TFA). Worked for the baddies, of course, though. He actually had a more interesting and "exciting/prestigious" lifestyle/profession than Luke did.

The only difference here is that Luke had a famous Jedi dad.

Finn's b-plot was the only thing I really thought was outright bad in TLJ. Rey/Luke/Kylo was pretty great and Poe/Leia/Holdo was at least interesting in theory even if the execution wasn't great. Finn/Rose nonsense was just a complete waste of time. Not surprised he wasn't thrilled with it.

I had pretty high hopes for Finn, he's my favorite of the new characters. I still think he can have a great story arc in the next one.

LMAO why is he surprised?

His character has been a pathetic waste of space the entire trilogy.

To add onto his point, they really attempted to build Finn and Rey up as this dynamic that had a lot of shared value with a spicy side of Finn being overly protective of Rey and Rey wanting further freedom to explore her story. TLJ pretty much threw out that dynamic and substituted Rey for Rose, which resulted in a rushed dynamic that I did not think was good.

Yeah, I agree. I remember after watching TLJ for the first time one of my main criticisms is what they did to Finn. Hopefully he has something better to do for the third film.

Finn, and any potential for a trio dynamic, seemingly got shafted for more focus between Rey and Kylo Ren. I wouldn't necessary say the latter is a bad approach, however, it came at the cost of the other characters like Finn, Poe and the newly introduced Rose.

Hopefully the third film is more of what he wants. Ultimately though, I thought the ex-Stormtrooper character could have been handled better throughout this whole sequel trilogy. Finn has had his moments, but for the most part, they've clowned the character a bit too hard.

A lot of us said this last week in the "was finn force sensitive" topic that got closed.

But yes, Finn was done a massive disservice in TLJ after being one of the most interesting characters to come out of this sequel trilogy. After a loss to Kylo we next see him played for laughs, and then sent on a side adventure that was probably the worst part of TLJ. They for some reason after seeing the chemistry between Rey, Finn, and Poe, decided to split them up for the entirety of the middle film.

Right, his one redeeming quality ripped out lol

Finn was done dirty. Let's get a poll rolling if people would rather Last Jedi get remade more than the prequels.

The Last Jedi was wonderful film with some shocking directorial/writing decisions, the Prequels are a dumpster fire. One definitely needs TLC more than the other.

all the scenes with finn were so utterly disappointing in TFA. created a really fun character with a cool back story to doing bullshit in movie 2?

Yeah, he should.

His character turned to complete shit in TLJ. It was one of the largest travesties of the movie.

Would have been fun to see Boyega and Rey and/or Poe go on an adventure, Boyega had great chemistry with those characters, though I think the path Rian took is also valid. It gave Finn some semblance of an arc. I'm glad it looks like we'll get to see some good adventuring in TRoS.

I wasnt a fan of TLJ but I especially hated Finn's arc in that movie. It felt so utterly pointless.

Give the man force powers. I dont care how hackey it is. I need that fan service.

I remember leaving the theater for TFA with so much anticipation of where they would take Finn after that horrific fight with Kylo. He got wrecked, and he I was so invested in his journey and how he might recover.

... TLJ had no intention of exploring any of that. His sidequest in that movie could have involved any random character. Even Phasma showing up for a fight with him felt more like a formality than an organic part of his storyline.

Rian said he had difficulty separating Finn and Poe from a writing standpoint and I think it translates over into the film in that he definitely didn't understand how to write Finn well.

Nah I agree with him wholeheartedly. I defend TLJ quite a bit but it dropped the ball on everything Non Kylo/Rey related. Finn should have been a Jedi/Force Sensitive

I don't think Finn should have been force sensitive. But I do think that being a former stormtrooper, he should have been able to play some role where he successfully rallies some FO troopers over to the Resistance, or is at least able to cast doubt amongst the FO about what they are doing. This why deleting that scene with Phasma killing the troopers in TLJ was an absolute waste.

I talked about this in my first posts after seeing the movie. Finn was by far the most interesting and fun character in FA and they just ditched him in TLJ.

TFA separated them. Not sure why that is TLJs fault.
Them being separated doesn't mean Finn can't continue to have a purpose

It's TLJ's fault for establishing that Rey doesn't need Finn for any reason

It would have been better had Rey actually been more so tempted by the dark side or slipped away without the support of her friends. That would have given Finn something to actually do in the sequels, and been a Samwise "emotional" hero of sorts Instead she figures everything out and makes all the right decisions on her own.

Still blows my mind that this scene was deleted. Obviously it's rough because the direction/editing/voiceover isn't finished, but the idea of Finn convincing troopers to turn on Phasma over her treachery feels like a much stronger connection to Finn's TFA storyline and a fulfillment of the idea that he represents hope to those who want to leave the First Order.
