I'll leave this without my own acerbic commentary to start and let his words speak for themselves...

It goes against Trump's current attack ads stating "Sleepy Joe Biden supports the radical left's quest to defund and abolish the current law enforcement structure".

The Negative Zone
This is going to be a really tough issue for Biden, and for all Dems. I support defunding 100%, but nearly everyone I have spoken to about it categorically rejects it. Even some I would normally describe as very progressive.

Well I'm glad we're catering to absolute lunatics who won't vote for him anyway.

Because departments don't already have enough money. Cities at this point are just police departments with underfunded public services.

Joe Biden is such an awful dude. No surprise here though. His crime bill set the stage for the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Brianna Taylor, and so many other black Americans.

Joe Biden is tough on crime, are we hoping to expect that to change because the people want it?

Putting our faith in democrats to fix police brutality instead of forcing the issue ourselves will just lead to another uprising in 5-10 years

You absolute moron. This election is yours to lose. Why the FUCK would you come out and say this and burn any goodwill you had from these people?

I swear to god Democrats will never fucking learn.

He has to say this. Trump is going to use defund the police to win the election. As long as he supports major changes as president I don't care what he says while running. Defund the police regardless of how it is in reality will lose votes in the suburbs which is the place Trump and Republicans lost the 2018 election and will lose the 2020 election based on the polls right now.

It's an attack aimed at swing voters who are easily scared into voting one particular way. They're currently trying to scare them into thinking the left want to get rid of police and introduce lawlessness. CNN's shittiest opinion writer covered it today:

www.cnn.com

Is 'Defund the Police' a massive political mistake?

On Friday, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser had a massive mural reading "Black Lives Matter" in block yellow lettering painted on 16th Street near the White House. The next day, activists painted another message -- in that exact same yellow lettering -- on the same street. It read: "Defund the Police."

What did you expect? He's not going to turn off moderates by using the language of the most vocal protesters.

This statement is fine. He talks about reallocating funds to education, social work, etc. That's literally what defunding the police is; he's just not using the word.

Like, you all know that Biden needs to be elected first before he can do anything?

The protesters and Biden have different goals outside of forging policy to address the issue. Let the protesters use language to re-focus the debate and let Biden try to get elected, and when he does, we can all come together and hash shit out at the federal level (and keep that same energy for local and state politics as well).

He has to say something along these lines. It sucks but GOP will use this to fearmonger idiots come election time if Joe does not do this.

Hate to say it, but like Keir Starmer, Biden is in a no-win scenario here. He has to convince over the on-the-fence Republicans that the Dems are basically not-batshit insane.

I don;t expect him to say the police departments want to reform but just are too broke!

There's a middle ground he could have taken beyond "abolish the police" and "give them even more funding to work it out themselves"

I think it's a legitimate messaging issue that bad faith actors are using to twist it into "LIBERAL SOCIALISTS LIKE AOC WANT TO GET RID OF THE POLICE!!!"
