Someone posted this in the other thread, this is a neat and lengthy takedown of her essay.

I know, I need to PM a mod about it. I'm absolutely crushingly saddened and furious about it.

Ditto, was such a big fan of hers and really enjoyed the Strike novels but she is truly a vile person. Never supporting her work again, what's truly amazing and shows how much she truly believes this shit is she could have just never commented and not lost all the fans she's inevitably losing from this.

DAMN!!!! J.K is completely doubling down on her transphobia in this completely garbage essay:

She's an awful person. It's a shame that because of her status, her potential to be a powerful, progressive voice is instead being used for hate. Especially considering that her most prolific work has messages that stand in stark contrast to her beliefs. Gross.

This was being discussed in the other thread, but it's definitely worth breaking out as new news new thread.

I feel terrible for everyone that got invested in Harry Potter and now have to deal with this.

It's awful, even just halfway through which is all I could manage. No sources cited at all, particularly damning that she does not even claim once in nearly 4000 words that any renowned doctors or psychologists specialising in this subject because she knows they're not on her side. And she can't even do the usual 'I'm not an expert, but' kop-out as she explains almost right away that she considers herself to be the opposite. She downplays or ignores the oppression trans people face, and downplays specific instances of transphobia whenever it's convenient to, focusing much, much more on anything that makes her look like a victim.

It's completely and absolutely fucked. I would not be surprised if all the shit she's claiming is stuff she completely made up on her own to double down on being transphobic.

Sigh, is all I have to say. Well no I'll say fuck JK Rowling, but aside that just sigh. I have way too many HP related things and illustrated books I was super excited to read to my daughter when she was old enough. Just sigh.

I know there are average memes about it but will future harry poter threads have to frame the creator as she who must not be named and stuff?

I think we can still name her and give appropriate context of her being a massive TERF when HP stuff comes up, with the game potentially coming and Fantastic Beasts, rather than pretending like she doesn't exist. Unfortunately it wouldn't erase her relation to HP media.

Even though she's a white billionaire, she is still feeling the pressure and has her back to the wall. Her legacy is forever tarnished and she knows it, so this is likely a desperate attempt to bolster her reputation with transphobes.

On the 'bright side', she's given amazing people like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson a much bigger platform than herself (Watson tweeted this mere minutes ago)

This is a big reason why Twitter allowing people to disable responses was such a bad idea. There's so much bs in her post that should be fact checked. People can retweet her but that wont have the same reach as it would have, had it been in the comments itself.

fuck yeah emma watson

also saw Evanna Lynch make a statement too

Now we just need Matthew Lewis and Bonnie Wright and we'll have the whole gang fighting Voldemort (and presumably Rupert Grint? Has he said anything?)

Her quadrupling down on this shit is really disappointing.

I feel bad for kids that grew up with these books and have come to see the author be a hateful bigot.

I got to the bit where she compared trans activists to incels and couldn't read anymore, it's vile and disgusting.

lol.

You know, I keep on hoping for some kind of 'Maybe she'a not like FULL terf, maybe she's just confused'.

I also fund medical research into MS, a disease that behaves very differently in men and women. It's been clear to me for a while that the new trans activism is having (or is likely to have, if all its demands are met) a significant impact on many of the causes I support

Those crazy trans, hoovering up all that charity money, lol.

I sincerely feel for you, that wasn't concern trolling or misplaced irony.

Sorry for the tangent, but for the longest time, she claimed to espouse noble causes, signaled she was in favor of the disenfranchised, and her background made it sound like she had a sound understanding of working class problems, so tons of people, myself included, looked the other way because she projected the image of a progressive who put her money where her mouth was, and some things from her works were written off as unfortunately tone deaf.
Then she began liking tweets from transphobes, I vividly remember a thread about that pattern some years ago, because I had no idea this was happening and didn't know that much about TERFs. Trans posters took it on themselves, when they shouldn't have to, to educate people like me why this was meaningful and suspect as hell, and why our instinctual benefit of the doubt was undeserved. From there, things kept escalating, being less and less oblique, retweeting people defending transphobes, then doing it herself a few months ago to finally her saying what she really meant all along.

I'm not defending her, she can fuck off, and I'm writing everything of hers off, but I can see why people had this picture of a (mild) progressive and would be surprised, even though it was a long time coming.

I can't get over the fact that these are all completely fabricated problems that have more or less been disproved.

Did she really think she was being smart and brave to raise arguments that the dumbest motherfuckers in the North Carolina GOP already tried and gave up on?

Jo is such a disappointment. I stopped liking Harry Potter years ago (just wasn't my cup of tea anymore), but I feel bad for current fans who have to go through this stupid bigot's meltdown.

"When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he's a woman"

I never understood that argument. Ill-intentioned men can still go in women's bathroom. There's no invisible barrier letting only women in.

The style of the letter reminds me so much of how anti-vaccine and other conspiracy theorists argue:

- A vague attestation of "having done research", let not specifying, referencing, or sourcing properly, if at all.
- Regurgitating the same basic talking points that have been debunked countless times. Arguments she would be familiar with if she actually had done any of the research she claimed to.
- Gish Galloping: Throwing as many half-truths, information, and facts into an argument regardless of their accuracy or strength in an attempt to overwhelm and confuse.
- Saying they have received messages of support from experts or people in the field, yet not naming them or giving any specific example.
- Red herrings and other logical fallacies galore. For example, sexist attacks aimed at Rowling are wrong, but they also have nothing to do with her comments towards Trans people. People being sexist to you doesn't somehow make you less transphobic.
- Glorifying themselves as the "real" victim, and setting themselves up as a martyr for enduring persecution for their beliefs.

She's absolutely gone beyond the deep end with this vile, transphobic bullshit.

amazing to me that people just woke up one day in the last 5 years and realized trans people were using the bathroom

shits (pun intended) been going on decades and nobody noticed, now they're concerned about all this mischievous action that has distinctly not been happening

What is this fear that men will become women in order to invade their space or be abusive?

Sorry, but men are invading women's spaces regardless. An abusive man doesn't need a dress or bathroom door to be either invasive or abusive.

Her being as critical of mere democratic socialism as conservatism showed long ago that she was either ignorant or wrong on working class problems. I honestly have no idea how you could have come to that conclusion.

I had however hoped that she was a misguided liberal who believed at the least that a. people could be free to do as they please as long it didn't harm others, b. respects people's identity and c. incorrectly thought that it was possible to reform capitalism so that all people could have a decent standard of living as a baseline

But nope.

I feel this is poorly timed with BLM really taking over conversations too. People are not tolerating bullshit excuses to divide us and I'm glad people are sticking it to her.

TERFs providing "answers" no one is asking.
