We don't need to wait for that. EA and others have already made it a reality.

I believe it's going to get way worse and here's why:

Streaming and sub services that don't require a console or going to bring in Mobile audiences. With their spending habits and their touch screens and all.

AAA games will be dumbed down and casinofied in a way that will leave us begging for battlefront 2.

What did Todd lie about? Not saying he didn't, but it passed under my radar.
What's even more surprising than the microtransactions is how the game plays. That battle system looks shockingly boring.
I'm pretty sure a lot of mobile games make the gameplay unfun on purpose (by adding "energy systems"/waiting to do stuff, gacha dice rolls, etc.) so that they can "empower" you to surmount the unfun aspects of the gameplay by buying microtransactions so you can "get to the fun stuff"

I'm lvl 20 in the game and have dropped 20 dollars on it. Probably have played a good 10 hours or so and can confirm that it is nothing more than a cynical money grab.

To explain why I've played so much, work has been hell lately, and at the end of my 12-14 hour days, still wired on coffee, my brain can really only handle the simplest of tasks while trying to shut down for sleep. And blades is just a series of brainless tasks and timers. The entire thing is is engineered from the ground up to get you to pay money at every turn. I don't play many mobile games, but compared to those I have played, this is about as bad as I've seen in terms of nudging you to the cash shop.

The game consists of like 3 dungeons which you load into over and over with slight variations on the same task and harder versions of the same enemies. Then you take what you earned and upgrade your town, very slowly if you aren't supplementing with store-bought bundles. That's pretty much it.

This gen has been such a bizarre about-face for Bethesda. They went from being a top-tier developer of industry-defining RPGs that was occasionally misleading on minor things to releasing awful, trash-tier GaaS and mobile games.

Their fall from grace would put Icarus to shame, and was seemingly spurred on by nothing. It's like they just decided to start having universally bad ideas.
Not really. Bethesda probably just saw the writing on the wall when the majority of their SP games tanked. Their pivot is pretty logical.

The industry term is "fun pain," coined and formalized at Zynga.

True, it can always get worse but I'm already at a point where I'm done buying these games so in the end it doesn't change much for me when publishers decide to stoop even lower.

My 'faith' in Bethesda was shook with Fallout 4. Everything after has just been sad. I jumped in at Oblivion so I imagine it's even worse for the Morrowind fans. I've no 'faith' in any of their future games. Hope they turn it around and do well of course.

But by that logic, why not release more of the SP games that don't tank?

There's no reason why Austin had to make a GaaS game instead of a proper New Vegas-style spinoff. There's no reason why Blades needed to be an exploitative, unrewarding mess instead of a genuine approximation of TES experience for mobile. There's no reason why a developer that's so concerned with profits would sideline it's most popular franchise, The Elder Scrolls, for an entire generation and leave it's main studio MIA since 2015.

This seems like proper mismanagement, the kind Kotaku exposed within Bioware.

It's a mobile game, I wouldn't expect anything else. There is a reason why many people don't take mobile gaming seriously.

Now back to our regularly scheduled Bethesda bashing.

Trash tier developer? Lmao

There are plenty of excellent mobile games. Educate yourself rather than naively writing off a huge section of the market.

Are we seeing the downfall of Bioware, Bethesda and Rockstar in front of our eyes

it seems like 76, Anthem and RDR 2 were all bombas compared to their usual output
I love how one game marks Bethesda'a downfall (a shitty mobile spinoff doesnt count) and how RDR2 was a bomba

what im trying to say is Rockstar is putting all the resources in on RDR online and its not making the money they were expecting like GTA online so it offsets the incredible sales

You can't measure RDR2 online success against GTAV. No game can stand up to monetary comparison with GTAV. It's one of the best selling games of all time and is still charting top 5 each month. Modern setting allows for more things to grind toward than the old west. A hot car, flying machine, yacht, mansion with bells and whistles, advanced weaponry, etc.

It's not fair to measure RDR success with that metric. It's plenty successful.

I think it's naive for Rockstar to think it will make that kind of money online.

GTA V is just a more interesting experience for people, lots of customisation, cars, planes etc.

RDR 2 is a great game and experience but it just doesn't have the staying power that's GTA does.

Are we really shocked about loot boxes and timers in mobile games anymore? Dislike them, sure, but to be so exasperated and "Well I NEVER!" about them feels like you've just awoken from a decade-long sleep.

Same. And I should add that I'm actually optimistic. I think bringing in those mobile players will bring in money and work to the industry. and I think AAA games rotting from the inside out will drive more players and their money towards mid-tier and indie games. So those might be better than ever.

The last time they put out a good RPG, one could argue, was with Morrowind.

One could argue that. People argue that the Earth is flat too.

There are plenty of excellent mobile games. Educate yourself rather than naively writing off a huge section of the market.

Nice assumption. I've played a bunch of mobile games. Doesn't change the fact the VAST majority is free to play garbage. A few diamonds in a trash heap doesn't change the dump into a jewelry store.

Even if we disregard the last two trash games I wasnt a huge fan of FO4 either. It was decent enough but I lost interest far faster than i did with FO3, NV. And skyrim

Bethesda track record recently for me isnt that much better than Bioware.

Its weird isn't it? I mean, if you have been in the hobby for a long time it isn't shocking because you see it happen over the years...but still surprising. We see beloved studios fizzle out or go through rollercoaster ups and downs but this one stings particularly for me. I think its because of my love for morrowind. Hoping ES6 isn't a fucking streamlined mess.

It's like they figured out how to suck all the fun out of an Elder Scrolls game.

Well, they already did it with Fallout...

It's first person Pocket Camp with elder scrolls skins. I don't know what you guys are so upset about. I mean if you want mobile elder scrolls, there is still Skyrim on Switch.
