https://themuse.jezebel.com/if-you-care-about-avatar-in-2020-please-seek-help-1840850987

It's been over a decade since James Cameron's nonsensical fantasy film Avatar premiered, but that hasn't stopped the director from working on several (several!) new movies in the series. First up: a sneak peek at a sequel I'm not sure anyone wants.

Despite the title, I have to wonder if anyone is genuinely excited for this?

I feel like Cameron took way too long with the sequel, and too be fair Disney delayed it for star wars so its not all on him.

(also its ok if you're excited about this, the thread title is the title of the article and just a joke)

People doubted Titanic would ever turn a profit.

Everyone was sure the first Avatar would be a middling success at best.

And yet what Cameron does best, that neither of those highest grossing films of all time had going for them, is sequels.

Avatar 2 will both be fantastic and it'll make a crap ton of money.

Yea, but Dark fate and Alita came out and both were disappointments.

Never cared for Avatar. It's a hugely overrated and soulless movie. Cameron's worst work by far.

It'll do fine domestically but probably hit it out of the park internationally. Expect a #1 opening weekend then quick plunge.

Cameron makes huge movies because no lbe cares about them until they're out and everyone brings all their friends to the theatre. Avatar 2 has too much history going in and I think it hurts the movie.

Avatar sucks ass. I really don't understand how anyone could get into its gross "Halo vs. Roger Dean" aesthetic, especially given how boring the story was.

The Dark Universe and Avatar are the only two cinematic universes that matter. They also have the best fanbases, comparatively.

I can't doubt Cameron.

I also give zero shits about Avatar and certainly zero shits about one or more sequels to Avatar, especially over 10 years later.

But if there's one thing Cameron fucking nails, it's sequels.

So I can't doubt Cameron.

Its like a Snyder film for me. I don't care nor think about it but suspect it will be visually amazing so when it hits Disney+ (that feels weird to type) I will strap in, smoke a couple bowls and enjoy the visual lunacy knowing the plot is not going to be worth investing in, and that's okay.

Medical? Psychological?

I woulda been interested in this long ago but holy fuck how long does it take to make a goddamn sequel? They've been talking about this sequel for 10 fucking years now.

I don't doubt Cameron though. People made the mistake of doubting the first movie and look how that turned out.

Man, people sure get fucking stupid when it comes to James Cameron. Every god damn time. Can't wait for the movies to be out and shit on all the people writing dumbass articles like this.

These sequels are something I probably wouldn't bother seeing in theaters if Regal Unlimited wasn't a thing, since I have to be pretty selective without it.

But it is, so I'll watch them!

Anyone who picks a title like that for an article deserves to be ignored, tbh.
"Oooh, I'm insulting you, please click me".

I think the movie will be fine, I'm not hyped or anything, but I just... expect something I'll enjoy.

I had a lot of people tell me they would see a sequel because they liked the first one. A surprising amount.

General audiences don't seem to care that it was a decade ago, and all the reboots in recent years seems to have shown that.

I'm excited. A1 was my first Imax movie, and it completely blew my mind. Made me rethink my whole life, no joke.

I'm in for the spectacle. It's been years since CGI has wowed me, and I want to be impressed visually. I also like alien creatures and environments so there should be some interesting stuff (even if it's a bit too safe like the original).

So is Jimbo gonna address the disgusting White Savior narrative present in the first Avatar or just ignore it?

I'd almost say expect the opposite. The first Avatar had a modest opening (by mega-blockbuster standards) - but had exceptional legs through January/February. If Avatar 2 actually does recapture that same sentiment - I'd say that's the box office situation. Good enough opening, but the buzz of the unbelievable game-changing effects work sells tickets into 2022.

I'm more excited about the second Avatar than I am in the 24th MCU movie (and I enjoy the MCU). How anyone can doubt Cameron, who directed two of the best sequels of all time, confuses me. Terminator 2 and Aliens are fantastic and I have no doubt Avatar 2 will dazzle as well.

I've never seen a movie so high atop the food chain at its release take such a plunge in terms of reception since its release. Everyone freaking loved Avatar, and then everyone hated it. Wild stuff.

I loved it when I first saw it but when I watched it again a few months later all the magic was gone and I was left with Dances With Smurfs.

I saw a coworker write on facebook that seeing this artwork was like christmas morning to him.

I do fondly remember release week when tons of people (myslef included) were eating crow, except Scullibundo who was laughing in the corner.

I am ready to clown myself again, but I have 0 hype for this and wonder if lighting can strike twice.

That's because there was nothing else until now. No novels, no comics, no shows, no toys, nothing. The only was maybe the theme park. Like, even Star Wars would take a nose dive in popularity if NOTHING came out for a decade.

I still don't understand when exactly the public shifted from, "A sequel a year later? Gross" to, "A sequel 10 years later? Gross" but I still feel caught off guard by it. Maybe LotR? Doesn't matter, what's important is I'm the only person in the world that wants another Jaws movie apparently.

So is Jimbo gonna address the disgusting White Savior narrative present in the first Avatar or just ignore it?
Get ready for the double-down my friend.

Not terribly excited, but I did like the first movie a lot, as an artist the movie was like design porn the film, from cool space vehicles, to mech suits, to cool animal and alien designs, to cool alien plant life, incredible scenery, it had a lot of artistry on screen to love even if the writing was a bit shallow. So yeah, I guess I do look forward to more entries in the design porn franchise.

Plus it's Cameron, even if you think Avatar was wholly unoriginal, the action scenes were fucking awesome, outside of Fury Road/George Miller I don't think there's anyone out there that does big action as well as Cameron does.

Saw the original four times in the cinema. I don't expect the next one to hold up to that but I'm interested to see the next one. Haven't watched the first in a number of years, will probably do so soon.

Avatar was a novelty and I can't see people deathly excited for a sequel. Seemed like everyone had their fill.

People get way too upset about things other people clearly enjoy.

I am genuinely excited for anything James Cameron makes because even if the movie isn't fantastic he always has something very innovative (technically), and from what I was reading this is going to have some baller underwater work.

One of the worst things about Solo bombing is that it led to Disney rescheduling their holiday movies for this decade. Avatar 2 was supposed to come out this year, now we'll have to wait until next year so that Avatar can alternate with Star Wars for the holidays.

If you can't tell, yes, I'm looking forward to more Avatar.

Check out the extended version if you haven't seen it, it has some great added character development and fleshed out plot stuff.

I'm excited.

The first one had a ridiculous development cycle as well, and while it narratively left a lot to be desired, from a visual standpoint - it's probably the closest I've felt to experiencing what audiences must have expected with the original Star Wars. I wasn't a believer in 3D and I'm still not, but Avatar was the closest I've come to believing that the technology had a viable future within the industry.
