I feel like Kanye took the worst lessons away from Yeezus. That felt intentionally deconstructed, a reaction to the maximalism of MBDTF. Now everything feels unfinished. He's releasing sketchbooks and demos. Some great ideas, and the occasionally great song, but frustrating as albums.

I had intended to avoid this album but it's free on YouTube, and after a decade of listening to Kanye the algorithms saw fit to recommend it. I wish it didn't.

The trend of sloppiness and carelessness that started with Yeezus continues and it's at it's worst here. It sounds like he went with the first lyrics he wrote, did a single one take in the booth and went with that one.

This is the 4th album where Kanye starts screaming and shit? That schtick's getting old.

The worst part is I thought it brought nothing new to the table production wise. It sounds like TLoP, Ye, and KSG. He's worked in church/choir stuff before to a greater effect (On Sight, Ultralight Beam). The only thing new here is the bluntly religious theme and I don't care for it.

I have a problem Kanye's blatant religiosity because it is being used to fucking prop this man up morally when he's just a run of the mill Trump sympathizing MAGA trash alt right sympathizer.

I mean look at what's going on Facebook. People are actually applauding Kanye for his religiosity as if he's some kind of black celebrity gospel role model.

Of-course when Kanye was blatantly preaching and pushing drugs, drinking, sex, rape, abuse, violence, gang and all kinds of filth in his songs no one batted an eye.
But Now he's pushing Jesus Christ and God, all of a sudden there's an uproar.

Hate to break it to you but majority of "REAL" evangelical and christian voted and will like vote for trump AGAIN. Because they value the laws of GOD and things concerning abortion above political views as they believe GOD has and can use a donkey to establish his will. Don't let your hate for Trump cloud your judgment.

TLOP is legit good... people shit on it cuz it wasn't the old Kanye.. but I like almost every track. Sadly he went mental during it.. and everything since has been getting worse.

This is like Born Again Kanye posting bible verses daily on FB like your rehabbed Uncle Bob after a year of AA.. it comes off as forced, a new mental addiction, and fake.

Anyway...the one good thing about this album is that its caused a lot of Black Twitter to start sharing actual good gospel music.

On second listen, and paying less attention to the lyrics this album kinda goes.

I've accepted that without the team Kanye lyrics will forever be garbage but the beats are good and his flow is much better than past projects.

They don't give a shit about anyone not them. The New Testament might as well not exist to American Evangelicals. LAWS OF GOD, as long as they don't concern giving a single shit about other people.

No avatar posting.
No uproar. Bad album. Hes made other religious music before that was way better.

Evangelicals are hypocrites for voting for a pedophilic, porn star paying, women assaulting, creepy father.

And thats just his issues with women. Nevermind all the commandments and laws hes broken over the years

I can't even appreciate the beats because Mike Dean is a horrible engineer and it's mastered like my speakers are about to explode. This shit ain't Yeezus. How did TLOP have more restraint than this?

Haven't listened but is this another "i'm so blessed that Gawd chose me to give me a talent and a wealthy fantastic life. Sorry for the kids with cancer that god just didn't think were special.".. a.k.a, "I'm the most vain mother fucker on earth but it wrap it in a fake layer of humble"?

Kanye has never preached rape or gang violence. Ever.

I will say that I am happy to hear Clipse together again. Hell Hath Fury is a classic.

He's pushing Jesus Christ and God as a marketing gimmick. It was just a couple years ago he was calling himself God. And by the next album he'll be onto something else.

I saw he's now saying God is helping him cure his porn addiction and that he advises people to not have sex before marriage.

He's really going after that right wing conservative audience!

That audience will buy this stuff on principle. Kanye appearing to stand with them is the biggest and most relevant mainstream celebrity for that community possibly ever. He no longer has to actually produce anything popular in a secular sense because there's a high ground floor for his non-secular stuff. It's a smart commercial move, really.

It's like they took the amazing talent of a gospel choir, and then just had a mentally ill man attack them with a drum machine and some autotune.

Was really curious but the whole religion thing is just a costume here. He compares himself to prophets, throws out lines that are pretty much the antithesis of Jesus' actual teachings, etc.. Crass and annoying album from a total idiot.

Laughed pretty hard at the Chick Fil A song though.

Yeah this engages so little with the actual words of Jesus and holds up Christianity as a totem against certain kinds of bad behavior. It's cosplaying as a pastor, completely detached from the gospels, and frustratingly, the times and culture Jesus lived in.

Like hip hop that looked at Roman occupation of Israel and compared to political issues of our current times would have a lot to say and a great example of rap that engages with Christianity beyond specific cultural references. And I don't believe Kanye has the knowledge or fortitude to pull something like that off.

This album to me is a guilty pleasure, I almost ironically love it. I don't usually listen to Kanye nor view him favorably. Good production and flow/composition are def the highlights here, I can appreciate the raw approach that Kanye took here. Shame that it's ultimately a manic fueled stunt (Kanye needs to get off the MAGA train,) but I'm just going with the flow and encouraging the insanity to continue.

It's literally extremely lame that some of you think Kanye is this 4D chess mastermind making this album to appeal to conservatives. Yeah, his MAGA antics are of course dis-favorable and unpleasant but it's not like its pertinent to this album whatsoever. It just seems like an overall superficial thing to bring up as opposed to real critique when you might as well just say "Yeah, I hate Kanye". It's pretty clear to see that Kanye acts pretty independently which is probably why he says so much stupid stuff. You don't have to ascribe ultra levels of malice to someone who is acting mostly out of stupidity.

The album in and of itself is just an example of Kanye retreating to religion as a coping mechanism and signifies that he's just not fully there musically judging by the fact that he struggles to make lyrical content. Overall, while the production is good, its not really worth listening too.The religious aspect doesn't really matter much anyway

Selah sounds like it's going to pop off like Blood on the Leaves does but it never gets around to it.
Jesus is Lord was the credit song for the IMAX thing and I'm sure it was longer there.

I think my biggest gripe with this is that it's too short and most of the songs never really get anywhere. Use this Gospel is tight though. Kenny G rules.

yeah, i don't think the level is some 4D "MAGA" shit either because the lyrics are too intellectually devoid to even signal boost that shit.

His last two albums combined are not even an hour long. Not that length is an indicator of quality but thats disappointing as hell. Overall I'm not feeling this, although I think its better than Ye which I didn't like one song off of.

After 15+ listens I've come to the conclusion that Follow God and Use This Gospel are the only songs worth considering as classics.

Everything We Need gets a special mention but I think it might "just" be great song as opposed to something that can stand up to the best tracks from previous albums.

I got to say, I'd fuck with a Ty Dolla hymn album heavy.

Never bothered to try Kanye West before--just never cared for his persona and I don't normally listen to rap music much--but at under half an hour i don't have much to lose. So this is my first Kanye album. It's kind of boring and the lyrics are dreadful.

It just doesn't feel genuine, like he's going "I"LL DO RELIGION THIS TIME" to cover up for something else. It's all surface level shit with no real point. I don't know how you can have a coming to Jesus moment, make an album about Jesus, and be so lazy with the words.
He wasn't always like this.
Try listening to 'College Drop' and 'Late Registration'.
Dude was absurdly talented and making better music than anyone else at the time. This current release is in no way a proper representation of Kanyes capability.
Also he needs serious help.

You just can't go into these projects thinking Ye is going to be Ye. Ye's last classic was Yeezus and after that we are dealing with a dude who can't even properly handle his own mental health let alone put out a complete body of work that sounds anything like his classics.

I have no idea why people even thought he would singleboost MAGA on his Gospel album. Kanye is obviously not taken kindly to being bipolar and his stint in the public spotlight doesn't do much besides makes it worse. So, I really have no idea why people post ascribing weird levels of ultra malice to Kanye's actions. It just makes you look like an intrinsically bitter person when it's obvious Kanye isn't that smart, is definitely confused, and is struggling to cope with his mental illness.

Like its one thing to say "Kanye is so dumb, holy shit." or "Kanye is really a conservative pundit in 2019" but I have no idea how people come up with "JIK is a MAGA album to lure in conservative supporters to buy merch" or "Kanye is trying to build a cult with Sunday Service, a free random pop up prayer event". It's just ???

Are we talking about the same Kanye?
