A change in business model. Focused on converting users to GamePass and enabling play on console, PC, and mobile.
a) they will make it back over time with GamePass
b) it gives them a competitive advantage
Probably to entice people like me to re-enter their ecosystem.
what competitive advantage did a free PSN give Sony in the PS3 era?
It was a meme for its shitty infrastructure and shoddy security. XBL doesn't have that problem.
PSN sucked ass during the PS3 era. If it was as feature rich as it is now then things would have been different.what competitive advantage did a free PSN give Sony in the PS3 era?
That would barely be news worthy of a press release.I think it's still at least going away for F2P games, but I don't know if they do it at launch of next-gen or the launch of Halo.

Also the reason Xbox might be willing to drop the paywall is because they believe that if everyone can play online that equals a ton more mtx purchases. Enough to make up the losses when combined with whatever they're projecting gamepass's revenue to be in the future. It's also pretty nice differentiator to PS/Nintendo.
Jeff's clarification doesn't really clarify much. Weren't his original tweets speculation that it was going away completely? Did he walk that back at some point to just be F2P games not requiring a sub?

Paying for it hasn't improved things in that respect. PSN is notorious for its shitty speeds.
Rumour is a publisher has made a deal with Xbox for Gamepass. One rumored publisher is EA, so that EA Play could become an add on for Gamepass.

The sort that allowed it to catch up after being months behind and enormously expensive?what competitive advantage did a free PSN give Sony in the PS3 era?

But the fact that it was free allowed them to survive it.PS3 didn't catch up because of a poor online network which subsequently got hacked in the tail end of its life.
