Can someone ELi5 unionization for me real quick, specifically how it would ever not lead to backfire from the entity you are unionizing against?
Owners of capital need workers in order to generate value. Without workers, there is no profit. That's the fundamental logic of capitalism, and is why workers have historically been able to form unions and extract concessions from the owners of their businesses.

Now, there's always a risk that the owner of a business could decide that they are OK with forgoing profit for a period of time, and sack all the workers. It's cost/benefit decision.

I hope that anyone who loses their job does a Giant Bomb and comes back bigger and badder (tho maybe it looks like they might just be striking? So hope that goes well too).

I get that people take pride in their work, but journalists really should not be complaining about adverts on their own site (nor should users). How else are people going to get their wages paid for? That goes for every scummer using adblock too.
As has been pointed out to you already, those adverts are a terrible user experience. They are also used as distribution vectors for malware that can break out of the sandbox with 0 day exploits, or even jus using JS to run crypto miners in the background while you're browsing pages.

Until ad networks sort their shit out and block all third party javascript, I'm going to continue blocking them.

Sounds like it's the end for the media group of kotaku and deadspin.

Looking forward to visiting the new site that these people being let go will inevitably start.

Content is still king, don't these new owners understand this?

I'm not gonna lie...... I was blown away that the doors remained open after that post a couple of weeks back about porn in video games with all the screen shots was posted and the community lost its collective shit. The writing has been on the wall for a while.... i wouldn't be surprised if Kotaku is a thing of the past soon. Jason is amazing and will surely land on his feet with no problem

Potentially sad and unfortunate news all around. Been a longtime reader. Always wanted to make a game that they'd eventually cover one day.

I will fund, and if there's demand, start a fund for others to join, that allows Jason and other excellent gaming journalists to thrive. Jason is the gold standard name in gaming journalism. The new owners should kowtow to him. Expecting the opposite demonstrates terrible business sense.

The thing is, they didn't apologize profusely. They issued what is the very definition of a non-apology. And no one got any repercussions for this. Bad calls happen, but their reaction showed that something is quite rotten.
Shit, my bad then, I thought they made a good apology

Yeah, I won't be shocked if all the people from the sites just walk and attempt a new site with connections.

This feels like G/O will just set ablaze and start new.

First they came for gawker.com, but it was a celebrity gossip site so I didn't care. Then they came for splinter news, and I was sad. Now they are coming for kotaku...

Feel like the whole website family doesn't have much time left, the new vulture capitalist management company is trash.

This shit is not going to end well, Kotaku's management team is obliviously not responding well. I imagine Gamespot/Grestmann inside was very similar.

I wish them the best of luck. I'd love to see them make a new site, like the Gametrailers to Easy Allies transition. Steal Patrick Klepek away once vice is done getting rid of Waypoint.

New developments get new threads so that the first few pages of discussion are actually indicative of what's happening, if there were really duplicates they'd get locked. Just ignore them I guess if you don't like them.
Every one of them is updated with every new development since yesterday. They're all duplicates at this point.

Best wishes to Kotaku's staff and everyone working at the other G/O media sites. Kotaku is one of the gaming news websites I visit regularly and I tremendously appreciate the work they do to provide nuanced and interesting takes on gaming.

I really hope that everyone lands on their feet if things do take a turn for the very worst.

There are seriously people in those Twitter comments rooting for the downfall of Kotaku and Deadspin?

DeStRoYiNg FrEeDoM oF tHe PrEsS tO tRoLl ThE LiBz LoL

oh man.

I am not a fan of kotaku and reading this made me feel like people might actually assume I'm a piece of shit due to my opinions of the site...

I actually think the website is really poor and outdated. That being said splitscreen and Jason are excellent and I will follow them wherever they go next. Good luck to all involved

Where are all of the gross pricks who always post things like "Hogan needs to come finish the job," and whatnot? Come stand up and be counted.

Ah yes, all of that reporting about rampant workplace crunch and sexist culture is completely valueless.

Yeah, I'm for one going to miss the crappy photos of Japanese landmarks, pedo art, and Adam and Eve sales posts with dildos growing from a tree on the main page.

Sure Kotaku had some great industry news and big stories, but you're cheery picking a bit here. They're not the New Yorker. Most of it was fluff pieces, snack reviews, and sponsored ads. I hope the team is able to land back on their feet.

They're not the New Yorker

You're right, they aren't. They're Kotaku. They have their own voice and have done incredible things with it. New Yorker has posted some dumb shit too, like Jon Franzen's trash climate change take.

But you're right. Totally valueless site.

Giving Tim Rogers a platform is reason enough to keep supporting Kotaku, IMO.

His video content owns. I pretty much only watch his reviews now.

Hope everyone lands on their feet when all is said and done.

This. Also Deadspin does great work as well. Diana Moskovitz put in her two weeks which is a massive massive blow to them. Links to her work are in her twitter thread but she did some tremendous work in her time there. To act like sites on GMG don't do great reporting and journalism work is infuriating. I don't always agree with them and there have been some pretty bad missteps along the way, but those sites do a lot of great work and no one should be rooting for the death of the free press. Ever.

Fortunately Jason is the best journalist in the industry and he'll get plenty of offers even if he's fired. And as for Splitscreen, when Kotaku ownership was up in the air a year or two ago he posted a message on here saying he'd find a way to continue the Podcast no matter what. Hopefully the other dedicated Kotaku peeps will be OK too. :(
