They would have if the next XIV expansion came out around summer like it normally does. Then XVI could have launched in holiday 2021. Covid has delayed their patch timeline by 2-3 months, so it probably won't happen now.
I still don't think it would have happen even without delay. but oh well. Yoship is a super human and can pull off that while also being a orange parser on his black mage.

If it comes sooner than what I expect, this would mean mid to late 2021. I was expecting early 2022, mayyyybe November 2021 at the absolute earliest.

important SE people that have had a grasp on the FF brand for forever. Their most recent work is all awful to me though. Posters on this forum have a tough time handling people who don't care for them though. It's a bit sad lol
ok, so these folks are the reason why ff have become so hit or miss..got it

I know Japanese studios are usually better with leaks, but I'm kinda amazed they haven't had any so far.

Like, we've obviously had some comments this year that in hindsight turned right or very likely, but they weren't big leaks and they only happened months or weeks before the actual announcement.

Knowing it might be targetting (or might have, Covid and all) Summer 2021 is such a joy. And even if not, I don't expect this to be much later than early-to-mid 2022.

Hopefully this ends the "it will come out in 2035 for the PS7 haha gottem" memes. FF16 Dev Team =/= FFXV or FFVII Remake dev team.

XV and VIIR dev teams turned their games around in good time. XV team can't be blamed for SE's problems which affected all development units, and VIIR came together pretty quick despite being rebooted (about the same time as XVI will have).

Yeah, but will it come out as an actual complete product? I understand it's a different team, but I felt pretty burned by FFXV that they couldn't even be bothered to flesh out the story in the original release. I'm extremely skeptical at this point.

eh, I give the team a pass for that, they were rushed while trying to make a game based off ten years of trailers of a game with no actual synopsis while also making the engine for the game

project athia is their big review to me

Probably the most feasible teaser Square Enix has ever put out lol. They probably started dev immediately after the shit show of FFXV's dev cycle(s).

The problem is folks can't seemingly get over when a specific FF game doesn't mark every checkbox they want from the game.

Not medieval, MEH, Not turn based, MEH, Futuristic Sci-fi, MEH, No Action Combat, MEH, and it goes on and on depending on whoever identifies what they feel what any given FF game should be. There isn't any sort of consensus at this point.

Square-Enix will never make an FF game that will please the entire audience considering how each game is a fairly drastic departure from the previous installment to the next. The real problem is FF is now become genre fluid. As opposed to being consistently an RPG series and for many years was recognized as an RPG series. If FF16 was not called FF16 and had no inclusions of FF stables like Chocobos, Crystals, and the traditional summons like Ifrit, Shiva, and the likes, under any other title it could have easily passed off as Medieval character action game.

FF used to have a semblance of an identity in its formative years. Nowadays though that hardly seems to be the case. The endless pursuit in chasing the mainstream CoD audience at the cost of throwing away a lot of long standing mechanics and traditions has not did do some of the recent installments of the FF series any sort of favors.

I just need the full version of the Prelude used in the trailer, because keeping the video clip on loop isn't enough for me right now.

Knew it! FF XVI as an exclusive for Playstation 5 in late Q4 2021 is quite a good get for Sony. Way to drive sales WW and in Japan.

The first thing after watching this trailer was like "Wow, this looks like its coming soon". We've got gameplay in the REVEAL trailer of Final Fantasy game. That's bonkers. Also it doesn't look super next-gen visually so I was thinking they started a while ago.

I think with the FF16 talk, a lot of folks are beginning to learn about Yoshi-P and the team working on the game. A lot of folks also don't really get FF14's significance in Square-Enix. That post asking the user if they liked Final Fantasy on the first page, the user being happy that Nomura, Kitase, etc aren't involved with 16, was interesting...

Here's a good, free documentary detailing about how Final Fantasy 14 went from being one of the lowest points in Square's history to being arguably the game that brought Square back. It's a 3-parter, so I just linked the first video.

I also seriously recommend folks watch this documentary. Danny O'Dwyer doesn't get enough praise for this documentary, it is really excellent.

Yoshi-P being a producer on this game almost guarantees efficient development time for XVI. Can't wait.

I do guess if a PS4 version is off the table. Sony probably paid for the times exclusivity to drive PS5 sales but seeing SQEnix writing off the 113 million monster PS4 so soon is quite surprising. Capcom is doing the same for RE8 tough, so I guess japanese publishers want to avoid being late to party on the next-gen train like the PS4.

Am I missing something? From what I hear this isn't insider information or anything, he merely said that based on XV's release. Like, you guys need to stop taking everything this person says as fact. He didn't "confirm" anything.
It's true that people shouldn't do that as often as they should, mostly because they put things in his mouth he never said.

But this is different: XV was made by what is now Luminous Studio (currently developing Athia). XVI entered pre-production the same year XV launched, sure, but the latter's release has little bearing on this, as XVI is by a completely different team (and even company! Luminous Studio is independent now, even if still within S-E).

Like, for all we know, especially since this is S-E, XVI could have had the chance of having started development only 1 or 2 years ago and targetting, say, 2023/2024, because it isn't made by the XV team, so it's not like this is their next project (that's Athia, which they started working on in 2018 iirc).

That's not the case, since XVI is indeed the team the XIV team has been working on since 2016 and one that is most likely targetting 2021/2022 if it's indeed coming sooner than expected (again, expectations due to how awful S-E's planning has been for the longest). All of this isn't based on speculation, especially the development time.

Why does literally every FF thread need to become hot take city? The FF fan base is the worst one, I swear.

I played FF7 and 7R back to back this month. They were my first Final Fantasy games after 20 years of cold, icy disinterest. Unexpectedly, despite my expectations, I loved them. I loved them to the degree that all I wanted to talk about was them. So I began exploring Final Fantasy communities, content creators, subreddits, etc. What began as a search for discourse became a study of that discourse and the people having it.

The Final Fantasy fandom is fascinating. I'm not going to act like I'm better than anyone or like I'm above it all, nor do I want to throw stones in my glass house as a Pokémon fan, but Final Fantasy fans are weird. Just crazy weird, man.

They are unknowable, controversial, unpredictable fans with intensely different interests and priorities characterized by the sort of baggage only a 30 year old brand can have. And because of how much I loved 7 and 7R, I am cursed to be one of them now. God help us all.

can't help but agree with rude here

I haven't been keen on a lot of square products with super heavy involvement with the people they named

but I'm excited for athia and ff16

"One little tidbit is that I heard from people who know the game or have worked on the game or are familiar with the game's development that it's actually been in development for at least 4 years in some capacity".

Again, don't wanna put words in his mouth because I know things are usually exaggerated/taken the wrong way/distorted when it comes to comments by big names in the industry, but yeah, this lines up with the next-gen AAA project the XIV has been working on since 2016. So it makes sense.

EDIT: oh, gotcha lol.

I've been playing Final Fantasy going back to FFV, but it has been difficult loving their games from FFXI onward. And I never imagined FFX would be the last mainstream game that I would enjoy would no reservations. Shoot, I remember the GameSpot review for FFX with Greg Kasavin back in the day. Time flies.

I really wanna know if the game is crossgen, if its a 2021 title it will have an install base too small to sell in Japan or the west

I love this post. Welcome to the fold.

To be honest if you were going to make a pie chart of "categories of FF fans" it would just look like a colour wheel, that's one of the reasons the threads always end up heated. Everything is marmite. For every one thing people loved, there are others who hate it. This is true of characters, gameplay,. design decisions, and the games themselves. It's just a caveat of the series because it has evolved and reiterated so much since its inception. I love it all personally, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what XVI is like :)

If it wasn't for Covid, I'd think it was a holiday 2021 release, but considering Covid, and this news, I'd expect it to be a 2022 release. Perhaps early 2022. The game looked great, and I'm super stoked for it!

Well, they need more time to polish those graphics then.

It looks significantly worse than FF7r.
FF7r looked absolutely godawful in some parts, with textures that barely load at times. I'm still waiting for a PC version so I can enjoy the game properly.

If the game is more open in its level design then to me it looks better than FF7r.

I just want to it to be far from
FF 8, 10, 13, 15 and type zero, and more akin to any other, those FFs pushed me away from series and even jrpgs in general
