What? "Loli" and "lolicon" are terms created by Japanese people.
Tiki did it way before and is a great character in comparison.Fucking LOL! I've never played a FE before and I just googled Nowi. She's literally the 1,000 year old Dragon in the body of a 12 year old trope! Did that trope got that name because of her? This is so embarrassingly stupid and I hope Nintendo knows it.
What? As far as I know actual child porn has always been banned, in 2014 what they banned was depictions of child-like characters in porn manga/anime, right? It's not like Japan were legally producing live action porn with 14 year old child actresses in 2013, were they?
I see you actually doubled down on your hilarious idea that all videogames should full stop just never have child characters, huh?I'm not saying we go back and erase previous characters, obviously. That'd be ridiculous. Just use older (maybe new) characters. Pokemon's never had you play as an adult trainer, so that could offer a new perspective to a trainer traveling around to take on the League. Didn't the devs say they almost used bunnies as the main characters for Splatoon instead of kids? Go back to that and see how it works. And Ellie doesn't need to be a child for the story to be compelling.
And again with all these: Removing a child character from the roster will not have any repercussions on gameplay mechanics.
Well, the question is what is more creepy, sexualized content with teenage characters meant for teenage consumers or
said content being consumed by people way too old for it. I mean, who over 22 is still "reading" Teen VOGUE, right?
The difference is that they don't pretend that Tiki isn't a childTiki did it way before and is a great character in comparison.
Stop drawing comparisons to western culture. "But the west is bad too" is an irrelevant statement. We are talking about a very specific problem about the depiction of underage girls in anime and anime games, and the west has absolutely nothing like this problem.
The existence of "lolis" like Nowi in the OP is a disgusting depiction of children that currently is unmatched in its grossness. These types of depictions need to be straight up banned, and child characters need to be handled responsibly, but there are deep rooted problems in the anime industry that are made worse by a consumer base who defends and supports it on both sides of the pond. Changing the consumer base at large is unfortunately out of our power, so the change needs to come from within the industry in Japan or from the Japanese government. They need to wake up and realize this is not okay, but I'm at a loss of what to do about it beyond boycotting stuff. It is disturbing and discouraging how rampant this problem has become.
The age of consent for the vast majority of the world is 16 so it's ok. I mean 16 years old do have an underdeveloped brain and are severely inexperienced and immature but it's ok apparently.

I mean this is true, but at least for me this is referring to things like romance options. Since the main characters in these games are typically teenagers due to the demographic targeting, making their romance options adults is also pretty problematic for a whole different set of reasons
So if Ellie were 20, she'd be completely unable to fight against clickers? You're basically sentencing her to die in the tutorial. And you couldn't possibly choose a worse example for your ridiculous idea because Ellie being the age she is was actually fundamental to the story. You couldn't have told the same story if she was 18 or older. Never.
She wouldn't be a stand-in for Joel's dead daughter anymore. Please stop this completely insane and idiotic argument that children should be removed entirely from all games. So if Ellie were 20, she'd be completely unable to fight against clickers? You're basically sentencing her to die in the tutorial.
Stop arguing this. You're not only saying all videogames should not have people under 18 but you're actually argumenting against one of the best female character we've ever seen in videogames. I don't even know what you're saying to me here. Ellie needed to be 14 to tell that story, end of story. So if Ellie were 20, she'd be completely unable to fight against clickers? You're basically sentencing her to die in the tutorial.
The issue is older people don't really look like children in real life. Even if someone is shorter or something, I've never said "oh, you're 35? I thought you were 11!"this is a strange take to me
because in real life when it comes to the law, it's the opposite --
doesn't matter what someone looks like, it only matters what their actual biological age is
To be clear I'm not arguing with you that media like this in shows with teenage characters predominantly targeted at young adults is inherently bad or shouldn't exist - if you're a teen or a young adult this stuff seems relatively normal to you for the most part - I just think that if you transplanted some of the sexualized scenes of Sabrina into a video game, a lot people here would probably be calling it problematic sexualization.
Like I said, there's obviously a huge difference between something like this and those lazy games that are literally just all sex with some sort of bare-bones gameplay on top of it as a justification. The broader issue here just becomes more noticeable because you watch a show when you're young and you move on from it after a few seasons. Video game series just go on forever - and suddenly when you're 35 these casts look a lot different to you than they did when you were 17.
Seriously, you seem to misunderstand what the word "sexualized" means in this context. "Sexualized situations" that consist entirely of dialogue is not what the thread is about.
I honestly can no longer tell if this is all a big joke or not.So if Ellie were 20, she'd be completely unable to fight against clickers? You're basically sentencing her to die in the tutorial.
I didn't bring up TLOU first, you guys did a few posts back. Era really thinks of it as the best game ever made, so that doesn't surprise me.
Alright, you guys win. Games are perfect as they are. Sorry for trying to stop pedophilia in video games.Stop arguing this. Nope. They say she is 18 but her, Honoko and Nico have special moves censored on them in DOA6 because of there young aesthetic. If they were "truly" 18 these moves would not be censored to avoid showing a minor being harmed.
Your solution for stopping pedophilia in games is the same as all of those EtcEra threads where people joke about burning down houses to kill a single spider.Alright, you guys win. Games are perfect as they are. Sorry for trying to stop pedophilia in video games.
You're not going to stop pedophilia by removing amazing characters like Ellie, for fucks sakes!!!! The hell is this?I didn't bring up TLOU first, you guys did a few posts back. Era really thinks of it as the best game ever made, so that doesn't surprise me.
Alright, you guys win. Games are perfect as they are. Sorry for trying to stop pedophilia in video games.
Altus wants persona to be a world wide brand, college or all seniors/18+ like Makoto would help making it easier to stomach WW.Except the games are set in Japan, where college life doesn't allow for the kind of plots Persona go for.
I appreciate the larger issues being raised in this thread vis-a-vis sexualization of underage characters. But in a lot of cases, such as OP seemingly objecting to child characters at all, or your wanting series to be college based where it makes no sense for them to be, it sounds like you're viewing everything from an entirely western-centric lens without having any understanding of the culture you're assessing. And while cultural relativism is a shitty defense for something like sexualized underage characters, as I noted, it reeks of rank arrogance when it comes to something as basic as how creators choose to tell their stories. Why is it an issue of Japanese creators want to have, say, a young cast of characters at all? As long as they handle it well? I get criticizing them for when they don't, but examples like Futaba or Veronica are absolutely out of place in a discussion like this.
Profiting from whales is largely all KT have now that they've locked themselves into it with DoA6, as the only option for most consumers is to buy the season pass or entire costume bundles. Unless someone has the Xbox or JP/HK PS4 versions, there is no buying costumes only for one's favorites thanks to removing the ability to buy them individually for every other platform (and by cosmetic DLC standards, the individual costumes are still cheap, much like they were in 5:LR).It's creepy as fuck and I'm sure the Japanese devs know exactly what they're doing. I mean take a look at DOA6! They are for sure banking on all the creepy whales that spend tons of money on expensive costumes for their favourite characters.
It's not just dialogue though - you can literally go see characters with half their clothes on writhing around in what is directly referred to as an orgy in multiple scenes of multiple episodes. Characters that are explicitly supposed to be teenagers. I'm not just referring to flirty dialogue.
Alright, you guys win. Games are perfect as they are. Sorry for trying to stop pedophilia in video games.
Alright, you guys win. Games are perfect as they are. Sorry for trying to stop pedophilia in video games.
No one said that. Your idea is just utterly ridiculous. Should we address concerns about how minorities are represented by removing them from games as well? Fuck no.Alright, you guys win. Games are perfect as they are. Sorry for trying to stop pedophilia in video games.
It's the only card I can play because Era really loves the game. That's like going into a Pittsburgh Steelers stadium and saying "Steelers suck" expecting not to be killed afterwards.Playing the "I'm the only one trying to stop pedophilia" card after making such a monumentally stupid argument as "Ellie should have been an adult".
I mean, holy fucking shit.
Given that Persona makes a whole lot of money off of merchandising in Japan, I don't suspect they'll do any sea changes just for an arbitrary WW boost when the recent entry is already doing over 2M WW. Atlus isn't some giant so I don't think they're about to give up that stronghold anytime soon. Shin Megami Tensei is the franchise that leans more mature, and it's never quite been as popular as Persona. The jury's out on whether SMTV will be a bigger splash.Altus wants persona to be a world wide brand, college or all seniors/18+ like Makoto would help making it easier to stomach WW.
I agree that "no children in games at all" is a weird take, but-
While colleges are very different in Japan, they're making fantasy games so it wouldn't be too hard to work in. Or have it set place in another country, or perhaps young adults in an office.
It's the only card I can play because Era really loves the game. That's like going into a Pittsburgh Steelers stadium and saying "Steelers suck" expecting not to be killed afterwards.
Not seeing the issue with Futaba specifically, given that the protagnoist is also a child (albeit older), and the age difference between them doesn't pass the creepy line IMO.
Granted, I haven't seen her "romantic", story line, but unless there's something really egrigious in there...
Really? What special move is that?Nope. They say she is 18 but her, Honoko and Nico have special moves censored on them in DOA6 because of there young aesthetic. If they were "truly" 18 these moves would not be censored to avoid showing a minor being harmed.
You do know that you don't have to play these games? If they are al the rage in Japan and perfectly legal there who are you to say that they should be banned or changed. Now if an English port breaks your local laws you are in your rights to take any action you see fit to get it of the shelves but who are you to decide what is appropriate for another culture. If their society has problems it's for them to work it out.
In the mean time don't buy the ported games. Maybe buy a wholesome western RPG with females in bikini armor that are well above the age of consent. Nothing wrong with that right? Or maybe a shooter or open world game that lets you murder countless people because we are quite comfortable with that. I think as gamers we can agree that shooters don't turn us into mass murderers. What are the chances that these JRPGs will turn us into child molesters?
You stop pedophilia by making Ellie look as realistic as possible to a real girl. She looks too stylized and "anime" in the first game. Stop making her look cute and make her look more brutal and a "monster". I think her TLOU2 look is much improved.
Break Blows, basically violent supers, and they censor in the way the final hit is striked.
The close ups where people get their faces bashed in have less blood for the female characters and they don't get shown at all for the young-looking characters. These:
Wait you WERE serious? This is the first time I've ever heard someone call Ellie in TLoU "anime".You stop pedophilia by making Ellie look as realistic as possible to a real girl. She is definitely not sexualized in the game, but the internet doesn't give a fuck it seems. The first game is a PS3 game, there's a limit to how realistic they can make characters. And obviously, she's grown up in TLOU2.
I mean, I don't even much like TLOU (never got around to finishing it, quit halfway through and just streamed the story), but including Ellie in a conversation about pedophilia is surreal and almost feels like a false flag operation.
Frankly, there's no easy way to say this, but thinking Ellie is sexualized is... probably not on the game.

This thread quickly went downhill, shit!
