By my read, this mostly just seems like an ill-thought-out statement about discrimination in her chosen field of employment. I'm not sure there was a need to draw a direct comparison to Venus and Serena to make the point she's trying to make about how hard it is for a female director to succeed in such a heavily male-dominated field.
It's called, ignorance, privilege and a complete inability and/or unwillingness to realize that the barriers Serena and Venus have faced, and continue to face, in a white country club sport are not trivialized just because they're not competing against men on the court.

Pretty obvious what her play was here.

This is really it.

Idk how these people can have so much money and can't hirer writers & managers for these kind of things. it was a pointless and avoidable comment.
And I'm not saying all white people have instant success guaranteed, let's be clear. Classism and life circumstances are real for everyone.

But this is a woman whose parents said, "here's your career in film/theatre", but at first she didn't want to so she went to a prestigious school for Anthropology then a year after getting her Bachelors turned around to accept the keys and went to a prestigious school for art and film/theatre. Almost no one can do a swerve like that successfully. Then she graduates with all of her parent's industry connections as a rocket booster on her back.

So much struggle.

Also, word of caution (and not targeting anyone in here specifically, just a take I've seen floating around the net).

But Black folks can simultaneously know what she was "trying to say," while lighting her up for what she did say.

Because this is peak White Feminism.

Such a weird (and bad) way to make the point she was going for. You don't need to tear down other women, especially black women, to make this point.

I love these riches to riches stories. So inspiring.

I should trademark that. Pretty pleased with it.

basically.

Goofy unnecessary comment that shows in Champion world, only besting men directly in something could be considered a noteworthy achievement.

any time you give some a compliment, just don't say "but" or anything after that. Backhanded nonsense that is rightfully being called out.

Peak white feminism. Sadly only reason why its hard to get worked up is its so business as usual that its hard to get worked up outside of the usual distain and distrust.

At the end of the day, even if its subconscious, its about joining their male counterparts at the top of the oppressor pile as opposed to truly fighting for gender and wider equality down the line. There's a reason why Will Smith got that shoutout without that same shade. #girlboss and all of that. I dont think she was being racist or mean-spirited, but that's the fucking problem in a nutshell, isn't it.

I think she meant it as a dunk on the guys that talk shit and try to diminish a woman's work, but she did it in a way that diminished Venus and Serena's own struggles. If they could play men, they'd kick their asses. It's a pretty poor analogy, and a very, very poorly thought out joke. She should apologize, but I don't think this was done with any vicious or racist intent. Just ignorance.

Sounds like she got a big head from all of the goodwill from the Sam Elliott thing and thought she could get away with pushing the envelope a little but ended up landing square into... this

Its always weird when they want people to cheer as a great triumph of inclusiveness when a white woman gets her time to shine.

the williams sisters got racist shit thrown at them their whole career and had shitty sports writers trying to downplay their accomplishments at many points. how the fuck does she see them and then decide to say that? she probably really believes she has it much harder too.

The Williams sisters careers have always amazed me. When I was younger I remember all the hype being about Venus. That she was the next big thing. She had her moment, but it seems like her sister's career was a million times better.
Easily the best sister combo in tennis ever, but I dont know that I would put Venus on the same level as Serena...
Having said that, I know shit about tennis.

I think the argument she is trying to make is that the Williams sisters don't have to compete against men in Tennis, at least not directly. Women's Tennis isn't necessarily "male dominated". Again, it's a bad way to try to make a point about the systemic sexism in Hollywood.

I think, and this is the last I'll say on it, that what makes this point all the worse (on top of seemingly attacking two of the most prolific black athletes in the world), in that making movies shouldn't be a "competition". Tennis is. Sports are about winning. Film making should be more about artistic expression, which is why, like I say, she should have kept her analogies to Hollywood, as Sports and Film Making are not very equivilant endeavors in my mind.

I would almost agree...problem is lots of the trials/tribulations the sisters faced over the decades had nothing to do with their on court competing vs women. The male gaze was heavy across the board to critiquing their attitudes, their gameplay styles, to their looks

As a casual fan of Tennis I can remember shit like:

"Who are these manly women unfair whupping on these other female competitors, PED's? Their bodies are unnatural, unwoman-like"
"It's a bit too much, I get the Nike endorsement deal, I get these are the same clothes other female competitors wear but it's a bit too much body; it's pornographic!"
"Why is Serena throwing a hissyfit? I know it's like a D- tier McEnroe rant at best, but still it's a stain on the sport"

And that's just shit I see I can write off as just misogynstic driven by male media, I won't even dip into the blatantly racist shit, lol.

Thoughtless is certainly a word to use… Imagine being thoughtful enough to direct an award winning movie but not thoughtful enough to simply NOT disrespect black women in a speech.

It's incredibly ignorant, and unfortunately it's a shared ignorance. People really don't understand how complicated and competitive sports compensations really are between men and women, even if they never meet on the court. That being said, why even say it? There's literally no gain in saying something like that. It's just a weird aggression against someone who had no stake in your movie game.

It was a self-aggrandizing statement that downplays Serena and Venus' accomplishments and even women in general, just by being a woman you're always "playing against the guys" because society makes it an uphill struggle. It seems like she wanted to add a tinge of empowerment rhetoric there but this was poorly thought out if it was really thought out at all. Hopefully she apologizes and learns from it.

This is what I read it as, and initiated by this vague pressure to perform stand-up and entertain that people seem to have upon winning an award, but was terribly insulting. Seemed to lack any context about sport, weight class, etc. I would wager she's never watched or understood sports in her life. And her little snicker after, finding herself funny, made it even more annoying ha. That's at best, at worst I can see why people would see this as racist, white privilege

Definitely Venus was the chosen one in the media as she had crazy athletic talent on display (she was doing backflips and gymnastic moves to some reporters). But people laughed when Richard Williams said to watch out for younger sister Serena cos she had the fire. Venus was also taller and longer (probably faster) but Serena has the intense competitive fire. We see the results now and Richard was right. The sisters have made history in tennis and Serena is the GOAT with the family getting no boost from anyone. Which makes this senseless comment from Campion head-scratching if she knew what the Williams family went through.

I can kind of see the point she was trying to make, but only when looking through a telescope of charitability.

I would love to know how much the sisters got in fights with each other. You had to figure they were both driving each other to get better.
Odd thing is ... I always thought Serena was the older one... lol

Why is it that they can never stop themselves from talking at their asses?
You had the good will. You made a strong initial statement. Move on.

Nope. Had to let her white feminism spill out a little bit.

Publicist probably had to work overtime last night

"I made a thoughtless comment equating what I do in the film world with all that Serena Williams and Venus Williams have achieved. I did not intend to devalue these two legendary Black women and world-class athletes."

Campion continued, "The fact is the Williams sisters have, actually, squared off against men on the court (and off), and they have both raised the bar and opened doors for what is possible for women in this world. The last thing I would ever want to do is minimize remarkable women. I love Serena and Venus. Their accomplishments are titanic and inspiring. Serena and Venus, I apologize and completely celebrate you."

Full apology from the article.

I'm reminded of this,

but then realize that hey, Randy is a cartoon character being put in a spur of the moment scene in a show that defies common sense on the regular, and this lady is attending an event where she fully knows she may have to give a speech on stage and has done so many times before, so she must have practiced that line at least ONCE and said to herself "oh yeah, it's all coming together!".
