I've never been overly fond of micro-transactions to begin with, and I've felt that they had no place in games that you buy to begin with. Some people like to give them a pass on free to play games, or multiplayer only games, but I'm done giving them a pass on anything.

It's old news, but I feel like it's still relevant, and people on the internet and especially in the gaming community like to forget things a little too fast. I was watching some youtube videos, and ended up rewatching one of Jim Sterling's arguably best videos. I may not always agree with him, but when he's right, he's right.

It might be an old video at this point, but it's still relevant and it really just hit me how terrible these game publishers really are that practice these sort of monetary schemes in their games. There is no excuse, none. "it's just cosmetic" or "I can just skip them" is not an excuse because they are still preying on individuals who may not be as strong willed as you are. I wish I could slap every parent who lets their child play games like Fortnite and any other game that is filled with micro-transactions, and battle pass bull shit. They're raising a generation of gamers who are all too happy to throw their money constantly out the window on a single game. A game that has no resale value, or investment value. Instant gratification so they can avoid the FOMO (which is another whole problem).

I feel this video is worth revisiting though, because it just helped me come to make a stand. ANY game, and I mean it when I say ANY game that tries to nickel and dime it's players, whether it's loot boxes, in game currency, battle passes. I'm done. I am never buying another one, and if I happen to be unfortunate enough to own a game that does this, is being deleted off my consoles. Fuck these games.

Hard to have AAA games continue on impressing the masses (i.e.: higher budgets) while still staying at $60 without extra ways to pay. I've only spent about $200 worth of micro transactions this past decade or so and I'm still having a lot of fun with games. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I'd honestly rather have game cost increase and mtx eliminated.

Pretty much this, it's a necessary evil at this point. Would be cool if devs only stuck to cosmetics that you can select (fuck loot boxes) while giving those who have the free time to grind some form of currency to redeem it instead of buying (which they'll probably make you grind hella days for). That and the occasional expansion whether it be story/multiplayer DLC or new characters for fighting games.

I'd be down for that too if it eliminated DLC entirely, but the masses won't have it.

I've been on this kick for a long while regarding loot boxes. Won't touch any game that has them.

Now what if it's

SP no MTX, MP MTX

Does that kind of break the rule? An example would be say Mass Effect games.
ANY micro-transactions, means no money from me. No exceptions.

Open a casino then. AAA games go rot in hell for all I care if this is what it means to sustain them. It's not just a matter of them trying to get more money that the problem. They're running an unregulated gambling operation, and it's highly immoral. They're playing on consumers that have addictive tendencies, and every other industry that sells a product with this potential is regulated and age restricted. Video games seem to think they're above all this.

I hope you're into Nintendo stuff, OP.

I feel where you're coming from. While I still really dislike the "it's just cosmetic" argument, though, I will still play a game that has microtransactions if I like it. I just don't buy the stuff and that's that.

It depends on the game, this would mean you wouldn't play DMCV for example which is silly because you really don't need to spend money on those red orb micro-transactions to get everything in the game.

But I get it, if a game feels like it's designed around the micro-transactions and it's obviously done in a way to make you fork some money then sure.

I mostly ignore AAA and mobile gaming these days so I don't feel like this is an issue I face a lot tbh.

While I do play cards games periodically, I stopped buying those kinds of AAA games long ago.
I mostly play games from smaller studios, or from niche genres and doing so have completely reinvigorated my interest in games.

Besides Destiny 2 (which I haven't played in months) and CoD, I honestly don't remember any game I played recently that has MTX. So its doable OP.

I really did not like how some of the DBs were locked behind paywall. Same with RE2R, locking away the classic theme behind deluxe edition or deluxe pack. That theme makes the game so much better and vast majority has no clue about it.

There's so much to play these days that I doubt he'll be left with nothing to play at any given moment.
Yeah, that person's comment just made me laugh. Thing is, I'll be happier without any of those games in my library, because any time I saw them in a game I owned, I was just left shaking my head. Especially if we're talking single player games, I found the balancing to suck, and always to be in favor of making you want to just maybe pull out your wallet to avoid some grind time. Fuck those games so much.

Increasing the entry price means less people can afford games though.

I'd rather have optional mtx at $60 than no mtx at $100.
I don't think it's a good argument that we should sacrifice the quality (yes quality, mtx make games worse) of luxury goods because they will be experienced by fewer people on the margins. That's just a painful outlook that we have to inject shit and spread it around to make it work for everyone.

I think it's too late. It's too established. For example Assassin's Creed Odyssey got away with pay to win without much backlash. They literally sell permanent 50% XP boosters for $20 (technically it's less, but that's the lowest amount for the 1500 "Helix Credits" you need).

I tend to wait to even consider buying a MTX game like DMC5 or Assassin's Creed Odyssey. I eventually lost all interest in playing DMC5 (doesn't look good even though I loved DMC3 SE, and Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Origin are dirt cheap even now with EGS sale + the many Ubisoft sales that go on where they both can stack. I get the full experience and some boosts for around $30. That is Assassin's Creed Ultimate (checks EGS store), which costs $120 normally.. what the heck haha).

Hopefully Sony doesn't start adding MTX to their single player, though I think GT has some MTX cars. I never got GT Sport because of it's big online focus (screw multiplayer for paid games pay wall). Uncharted and TLOU most likely only have MTX in their MP, which isn't too bad for dancing skins, whatever. I just don't want MTX invading single player which could affect game design (hello Assassin's Creed Odyssey).

They aren't a instant no-play tier thing for me yet, unless lootboxes or Pay to Win, but they can definitely quickly turn my opinion on a game regardless of if just cosmetic, Destiny 2 being the most recent example of it just getting too much and me just getting sick of it.

I feel like I saw you post in an FF7R-2 speculation thread recently. That first game has MTX for summons (and a crappy Butterfinger tie-in). Are you going to avoid FF7R-2 now?

Wait, so is your argument that every game needs to be subsidized by gambling so that the poorest areas of the market can access it?
Oh please the vast majority of mtx are non invasive and you'll barely notice them unless you search for them.
I played AC odyssey for 77 hours and looked at the ingame shop for 2 minutes when they introduced it.

I know plenty of people who already can very rarely afford to buy a video game and what you're saying is they should not be allowed to play games at all because there is a ingame shop that you can ignore in 99% of the games.

I respect that this is something important to you, but it seems odd to me that you may just skip over the pinnacle of certain genres you may enjoy just because of this.

Like games like Crash Team Racing and Devil May Cry V have microtransactions, but they're entirely inconsequential to the game and you can enjoy them without even noticing that they exist.

Also where do you draw the line of what is a microtransaction and what is DLC? Does Smash Bros selling Mii outfits count as a microtransaction or does it have to be currency or exp that's for sale?

People have gotten so fucking brainwashed by these game publishers to think it's something required, as if these games can't be made without predatory practices.

I mostly play single player games now, but ya know, at one time I did really enjoy playing a multiplayer game too. Played plenty of Halo 2, Counter Strike, and other MMO style games at one time. It's when they shifted to this GaaS bull shit that I started hating them. Spending money to earn rewards in games, is not rewarding. It reminds me how when I used to play FFXI, and micro transactions weren't really a thing, but gil sellers were. a couple times i partook in buying gil from sellers, and every time I did it, I felt bad. These weren't legit micro-transaction, but the psychological effect was the same, and I came to realize that not only did it make me feel worse, but it took away the point of the game. Spending money to just be given what you want doesn't make for a fun or good game to me.

Oh please the vast majority of mtx are non invasive and you'll barely notice them unless you search for them.

It's the principle of it. It's time to take a stand, and I may be just one person, but I'd like for one to become many someday.

DLC currently does not fall in line with my idea of MTX, because it's a one time purchase. It's something you buy, and can't buy again, so it's a form of ownership. Currencies and loot boxes are something that you can literally pour your entire household's income into.

Wait, DMCV has microtransactions? That's crazy. Capcom's some greedy fuckers these days.

Oh please, don't turn this into some fanboy thread. Nintendo isn't innocent in this either, as their mobile games are known for having some shitty MTX practices in them. Fortunately for the time being their console games seem to mostly be excluded from this, but they're hardly innocent.

DMC4 did way back in 08. They just allow you to buy more red orbs for upgrades, but it's not like you really ever need them anyway.

Honestly don't think I've ever given a cent towards micro transactions in my entire gaming life. Don't really play much MP so I guess that helps.

User banned (1 week): shill accusations, hostility over multiple posts
Ah yes the good old 'there are no valid arguments but mine so you must be a astroturfer'.
Because you talk like someone who's a fucking shill. If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it looks like a fucking duck. I just call it like it is. You don't see outside your own little worldview, and don't care or are not willing to see the damning effects that these types of practices can have on individuals. The video I posted goes into details about situations where people with gambling addictions turned to video games to hopefully combat these addictions, only to be thrust back in, when people around them were surprised to learn that Call of Duty or Fifa was just as bad if not worse as going to Las Vegas.

I hate the "Its just cosmetic" response so much lol.

I think there should be a hard limit for amount of mtx, unless the game is f2p.

I see the corporate bootlickers are already piling into the topic.

It'd be easier to swallow the "necessary evil" rhetoric if we didn't already know that these games are already profitable without the monetization.

AC Odyssey can be pretty grindy. It definitely seems like the game was designed to encourage MTX. It's still a good game, but it's annoying that the game design was compromised for it.

I don't stand for f2p being an excuse, because the whole "LOOK WE'RE FREE" bull shit is just a means to get you into their ecosystems where they can ravage your wallet as often as possible. They know they'll make more than just a $60 purchase. Fortnite is "free" but it's one of the most expensive games on the market.

Crazy. Never played a Devil May Cry game but those look like pure single-player experiences. Capcom's shameless.
