Exactly. It adds a unique mechanic you'll never see with a two-handed weapon. I like switching between two-handing and a shield based on the situation.

I've come around on Elden Ring; I stopped using the horse and shield

I'm glad some folks are so damn good at this game they have self-imposed rules to keep it challenging, but I'm still finding it quite challenging in spite of my liberal use of Torrent and the mighty shield barricade plus guard counter (aka the no-no-fuck-YOU ash of war).
I couldn't get by without using a shield in this game. I don't use it all the time, but lots of enemies have long strings of attacks where you'd need perfectly time several rolls in a row to not get hit. I could go shieldless perfectly fine in the other Souls games, but the enemy attack patterns are far more complex and varied here.
