I'm 51. I'm sitting here mixing my breakfast cereals.

Where has my life gone?

Do you walk around the house switching off lights in rooms?

(I have noticed I have started doing that...)

Relax. Straighten your suspenders, clip your magnetic reading glasses together and finish your mixed breakfast cereal.

I listen to the the Grateful Dead all the time, I check lights and locks all the time, and I announce the mail to the house.

I've become my father. But joke's on him as I also became his daughter.

I was there by 30. Specifically setting up our living room to be anti-guest with only two chairs, getting mad when someone knocked on the door or dropped by without giving me at least 3 hours' notice, maintaining a stranglehold on the thermostat, waking up super early on the weekends because I didn't want to sleep away my Home Depot time...

Thanks for sharing, what is your interpretation of this song?

lyrics for the can't-audio-crew
My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, dad"
"You know I'm gonna be like you"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then
My son turned ten just the other day
He said, thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw, I said, not today
I got a lot to do, he said, that's okay
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed
It said, I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then
Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?
He shook his head, and he said with a smile
What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then, dad
You know we'll have a good time then
I've long since retired and my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind
He said, I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad
It's been sure nice talking to you
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then, dad
We're gonna have a good time then

I realized this a while ago when it was late at night, the house was silent and instead of enjoying the peace and quiet I got seriously tilted over an empty candy wrapper lying on the table INSTEAD OF IN THE GARBAGE BIN WHERE IT BELONGS.

Gone around and turned lights and switches off since I was young, guess I'm an old soul. Will politely urge any kids I'll have to wear warm clothing and use the Central heating less in the winter lol.

I do not think i'm the same as my father (i fought against certain character traits all my life, haha). I do think time goes by incredibly fast.
Especially after i became a parent.

Oh well, make the most of it, OP!!

I bought a condo recently. I remember being annoyed at my dad telling me to turn off the lights when I was a kid. I have been monitoring the thermostat and lights. My condo is a dark and slightly warm cube. But at least my electric bill is really low!

Does 'cat's in the cradle... little boy blue' refer to the superstition of cat's sucking baby's breaths away? That sentence, though beautiful, always confused me in the context of the song.

Yes. My Dad died a few months ago, he was 92.

RIP.

My dad died at 62. I needed more time.

To answer the poll, I took a lot from my mom growing up. I'm just like her in a scary amount of ways.

And then in a lot other ways we couldn't be more opposed.
