Same, although my faith was rekindled before Three Houses by Shadows of Valentia, which still has the best localization in a Fire Emblem as far as I'm concerned. The dialogue is just top notch:
I did really enjoy Shadows of Valentia as well! But I was afraid that it wouldn't really reflect what would be done with a new game since it was a remake.

I got this at launch and have still only gone through two routes (and the DLC). I dunno how some of you managed to get through all of this within like the first week of the game being out.

Not just my game of the generation, my Favorite Switch game. Love the music, replayability, DLC, characterization. Everything but the maps is perfect.

This is am amazing adventure with just enough bulk to keep you invested unti the last few lessons. Plus, it has an amazing story with vastly different final encounters depending on which house you chose, with great and memorable characters to match. And the music... THE MUSIC... it's a combination of all the fictional elements that create such incredibly unforgettable moments that we'll still be quoting and meme-ing for years to come.

Absolutely one of the best Fire Emblem games in recent memory just because of how big it is. I want to do a Black Eagles Maddening to wrap up the game fully after I got, and beat, the DLC. And both Blue Lions and Golden Deer routes completed. It's definitely hard to put down when you're in your element. When things aren't so hectic, I'll be sure to give that last run my full attention.

Speaking of Joe collaborating on arrangements of Three Houses music, he is in this arrangement of Apex of the World

One of my favorite games from last year and probably the best Fire Emblem so far, every character has so much to say and they are all so endearing, such a solid cast.

Shoutouts to Joe Zieja (Claude's VA) for not only giving an amazing performance but also for being a part of the FE community, he streamed his playthrough of Golden Deer ever since the game released and he just started Black Eagles. Also he did a collab with FamilyJules, who does covers of songs, their rendition of God Shattering Star is straight fire.

What an amazing cast of characters.
Played the blue lions route and every single character of that house was good. Dedue was my favourite, though

Didn't think I'd see such a massive resurgence for Fire Emblem but I was through the roof in excitement for this game. Made it up to the 500th hour mark and still working through my 3rd playthrough on Maddening.

God has it really been one year?

I remember how i binged it when it came out. Afterall, its reveal years ago during the Echoes announcement was the reason why I started shopping around for a Switch.

As i mentioned in another thread, to me Three Houses was the game that finally nailed what the series tried to aim for since Awakening. This series has hit a new peak thanks to this entry.

And the MUSIC!! I remember having my concerns pre-release with all synths and electronic sounds in trailers and preview tracks. Then the game came out and arguably the best map theme in FE history starts playing :)

The first FE that I come to recognize its characters by their personalities and stories instead of their appearances and stats.

The game is really good even if I dont like the community around it much, I much prefer to discuss about it with old timers than people than just played it. Regardless of my grievances of the fanbase of this game, I think this game is a step in the right direction with it pulling back from the mistakes fates did and adding a lot of good things, of course not everything is good and it also reverted some of the improvements Fates did to go back to kaga era ideas, specially gender locked classes and approach to level design

Amazing game. Before it I never thought I could ever get into the series, it didn't appeal to me at all, but man I was so wrong. Top tier game although it has a lot of room for improvement too

Still one of my favorite Switch games and easily my favorite Fire Emblem. It was such a joy to play and the story was miles above its immediate predecessors.

Still need to go back and play Dimitri's route, but I'm Golden Deer forever!

It's not perfect and clearly could be improved in some areas, but damn I love this game. It might end up as my game of the generation (that, or Breath of the Wild).

I'm still starting out in it - the story hasn't really kicked in yet so the pace is almost as glacial as the bad framerate in the school area. Is there any particular point where it gets more serious and hooks you? I loved Awakening, but this has so many subsystems that I've spent very little time actually fighting.

I think from ch3 onwards you should be able to do battles every weekend, you only need to be on the monastery once a month, so you can just free battle every weekend but the first on each month
Storywise, it should start to pick up at ch6 (i think thats the one titled "Rumors of a Reaper")

Can't believe it's been a year. I remember my hype going through the roof when the leaks were confirmed with that E3 trailer. And amazingly the game lived up to that hype. Obviously Edelgard is my favourite but the three lords (and most of the rest of the cast too, tbh) are all incredible. Still have to play Silver Snow.

Am I the only regular of the prerelease speculation threads that stayed the hell away from the story leak? I understand not liking Fates, but there was some serious prerelease paranoia.

Three Houses is a very good game and on the top half of the series but I do wish they kept the art style of Echoes which I liked more. I'm also one of those weirdos that misses the weapon wheel. That said, the gameplay was fun, the monastery activities were well done for what they were, and the cast was great overall even with some weak links in there. Had a very good time with it even with the issues.

Petra is best girl too and I will not hear otherwise.

The maps suck and it took months for them to put in a proper difficulty level. Also the pacing in part 2 is bad because the monastery becomes pointless.

You have to love it for the characters because the gameplay is worse than conquest.

Eh, the writing of Awakening and Fates -- the two most recent original entries -- ranged from meh-to-terrible, so I don't think the trepidation was so much paranoia as an earned lack of faith. But Shadows of Valentia went a good way toward allaying my concerns, and the leaks did the rest.

Honestly, the entire discussion of the leaks was the best part of pre-release. It was a welcome adrenaline shot in the arm of the fanbase. There was incredible potential in the snippets Thanibomb gave, and while not all of it was quite met, other parts were met in spades, and the game still turned out to be a lot of fun.

Massively flawed, the sheer amount of repetition you'll face running through all routes in order to get the full story is absurd.
There's a plethora of niggles I have regarding the UX from (yes) text size all the way down to not seeing how many of a particular item you have in your inventory when buying more.

I actually wish they'd been less ambitious here, you could really see the budget straining at points (just look at those support scene backgrounds!) but there's still a lot to love, mainly the great cast who are by-and-large all fantastically well written and voice-acted.

Amazing the turnaround on this game. I remember everyone thought it looked like trash (me included) leading up to release, but it ended up being both a fantastic return to form and a big step forward for the series. Top 5 switch game for sure.

Definitely one of the best games on the Switch currently and a true gift to Fire Emblem fans. Even got me to play a second round in less than a year. Will probably eventually play Dimitri's route as well. Can only hope the streak continues with whatever comes next.

I understand that. I'm more lenient toward Awakening than a lot of FE fans because it is what it set out to do. But in the lead up to Three Houses, it felt like a lot of people just ignored that Shadows of Valentia existed. Yes, it's a remake, but the vast majority of the writing and dialogue in the remake is brand new. And while some of the story beats don't work as well as they should, it's still vastly superior writing compared to Fates or Awakening. It even introduced additional characters that fit well into the world that didn't exist in Gaiden on top of that.

To go along with that was the bizarre fear of the Treehouse some people had. Like, yes, they localized Fates. But there's only so much that can be done when the source Japanese script itself is awful. And that was a result of a writing experiment gone horribly wrong.

People straight up went out of their way to find any reason they could to be fearful of Three Houses, which was bizarre if you're someone like me that liked everything they saw without having to dig into the Thanibomb.

The first game I've ever played in the series and an excellent one it was. The characters and world were so well realized, at least compared to what I expected. The developers were definitely too ambitious but I liked all the idea that were there. Very excited to see what the next entry brings

I think the problem is the monastery activities that you have to do after the time skip that really drags the game down. If they continue to have these mechanics in the next games I hope they find a way to streamline it
Personally I loved all of the monastery content as you slowly built up your teaching ability so that you could ramp up your unit's growth and really plan out their ultimate promotions, it was my favorite part of the game. BUT, the problem is that you get everyone to their final forms well before the end of the game, and at that point pretty much all of the monastery content felt pointless and much more boring since it lacked real purpose. I agree they either needed a way to change things up and get more meaning out of it, or cut it down more.

I really, really enjoyed my experience with it. It was my first Fire Emblem and first time playing an SRPG. I'd love to find time to play through another route soon, I went Golden Deer before.

I feel like I'm in the minority for Team Dimitri. Blue Lion-stans, where you at? ;__;

Claude was okay, and I just couldn't get into Edelgard.
Annette best waifu, Leonie a close second, don't @ me.

Say what you want about the gameplay and plot, but the two things that really made this Game one of my favourite Fire Emblems is the character backstories/development, and music. MY GOD THE MUSIC. <3

One year and I still haven't beaten it. I think I stopped playing because of how long the stages take and how little the Switch's battery lasts (I primarily have to play in handheld mode). It felt like I wasn't making progress in the story especially with the Monastery padding out things in between.

Alright all, I bought this on launch and DLC before playing any of the main campaign.

I have not made it pass the time skip for Edelgard route... I want to love this game so bad But for some reason, the mechanics around managing the students feels like such a drag I am struggling to get into it.

I also don't want to mess up classing you and everything like that, any suggestions or guides to assist so I can get engaged in the story and start to play this one?

If you're just playing on Normal or even Hard, it isn't at all necessary to min/max the teaching of your students. You can literally just set it to automate and be fine. Just look ahead at the classes in each tier and focus each student on the requirements to progress where you want them to.

It is pretty amazing how much this game has stuck with me over the past year. Normally I'd play through a game once and move on, but this had me coming back for more and more. I haven't done a deep dive into a game like this since the Mass Effect trilogy. Part of it is the different routes with the different sides of the story to explore and different characters to get to know. There are a ton of different ways to do character builds so even returning to old routes is fun. New Game + allows you to create some wild builds that are very rewarding to bring into Maddening. I've created a monster and his name is FERDINAND VON AEGIR with Brawl Avo +20 and Quick Riposte to work with his personal ability. Quality of life features like the aggro lines and divine pulse make the game enjoyable to play without a dumb misclick or unlucky enemy crit forcing a full map reset. Who has time for that these days? It's nice to pick up the game knowing I'll be able to make forward progress each session.

The game is just such a joy to play. Almost to the detriment of everything else. I got a new copy of Ghost of Tsushima to break into this weekend, but even then part of me is wondering if I could instead wrap up my latest CF playthrough...

Midgar, With Love
Greetings,

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is 2019's Game of the Year. It has an amazing cast and an engaging gameplay loop. Its story may start off slow to some, but in almost every route, the second half blows expectations out of the water at least on some level or another. I want you all to know that I would die for any of my kids, and I would marry any of Part 2's grown-up lords -- or Shamir in either part.

Thank you,
Quinton

Unless you're in Maddening, you really don't need to sweat it. The students do a good job of coming to you to suggest training that will suit them, and basically as long as you play to their strengths you'll be fine. It's a system that's pretty hard to find yourself in a dead end. Honestly there is only one pitfall and it's easily avoided:

Don't make Flayn your dancer.

Avoid that and you're golden.

I narrowly avoided that fate on my first playthrough. I was weighing the choice between Dorothea and Flayn as my dancer, considering if I should make my dancer someone I would bring into missions anyways or go with someone I would only use exclusively for dancing. Luckily the hornier wiser choice won out and I didn't screw myself over.
