You should have a family supper/get together (obviously a small gathering, as long as you're all health) on January 20th. Don't say a word. Just stare at your father in law all night, with a small smirk on your face.

Many millions of people will believe Biden stole the election for the rest of their lives.

Today my mother declared that Fox News is turning into CNN.

So now she'll be watching Newsmax exclusively.

She's so far gone and it hurts.

It's funny, sad, and deeply pathetic.

But it is also dangerous, and incredibly un-American. Trumpism has broken republicans.

GOP has lost control of their constituents, imo.

Hopefully they fracture well.

Trump has lowered the intelligence of his own base, where science and evidence is dismissed and devalued because it's inconvenient. Claiming fake news of real news is his invention. The guy has put the world back years.

It's been interesting watching it. They've always been dumb sheep but this is breaking them into a full on delusional disorder. I guess we just let them spin their own wheels for a couple months and kick Trump out in January.

The moment Trump believes the GOP didn't do enough for him and lashes out at them is the moment the GOP has a split that will be incredibly bad for them in future elections - possibly as soon as the January 5 Georgia Runoff. That's why we're seeing McConnell and the Republican GA senator candidates go as far out of their way as possible to make it seem like they're doing everything they can for Trump. They know that Trump can do some real fucking damage to their electorate if he wanted, and they wouldn't be able to stop it.

You should see my family group chat. I live in a red state that Trump won comfortably. Basically what they've been discussing the past few days is how the election was stolen through mass voter fraud. They're not even huge Trump fans, they just tend to always vote Republican.

Are we secret siblings because this exact same thing happened to me today with my mom. She is a retired teacher who never said a word about politics until she retired and started spending lots of time on Facebook and watching Fox News.

Her,my aunt and GAY uncle,a lawyer who has lived in Manhattan for 30 plus years all sent me texts literally calling me a disgusting person for questioning how they could support Trump when he is literally killing people with his rallies and making it more likely that myself or someone else in our family could die from the virus.

They all told me to have a nice life and not to contact them anymore. I have 2 kids age 6 and 13 who are devastated which absolutely enrages me but also makes me incredibly sad.

None of them were ever like this until the last couple years.

How do you combat an entire media ecosystem?

They see something on Facebook and check NewsMax or OAN or right-wing forums or conservative radio or even sermons and find those stories repeated in different forms, providing authority to their beliefs by sheer volume and repetition. They think they're right, because everywhere they look for validation and corroboration they find it. Its everywhere: Trump isn't racist, he's done the best anybody could do with COVID, and he's being unfairly demonized by socialist anarchist communist dark forces. There are articles and videos everywhere you look showing antifa violence (or violence against those described as antifa for lols), cities in flames and voter fraud, social media censorship and the President is calling it out and Republicans in power say it too.

The only channels that question that view are anti-Trump and therefore biased and can't be taken seriously. The media lies, foreign media lies, politicians lie, the World Heath Organization lies and the CDC lies and the FBI lies and US Intelligence lies and Science is bought and paid for. If its all lies, might as well find solace in their firm conservative beliefs and the chorus of further entrenched voices that support those views.

I don't know man. But I miss the family I've lost to this madness. They used to be happy, and now its just seething rage, for what?

my husband doesn't have that close a relationship with his mom, and thankfully believes on his own that his parents are complete fucking dumbasses. He even called out his mom for posting some homophobic shit on Facebook, despite the fact we're queer and they have always been kind to us. He's on my side.
Glad to hear it. Always feel like it still must be hard to be alienated from your parents on the basis of political issues - especially these political issues - but at least you guys have each other 👍

Ugh wtf us this QFS ballot tinfoil hat shit my friends sending me?

It's Q Anon shit. As the story goes, all of the legal ballots had digital watermarks that are being verified by blockchain. This is all an elaborate ruse set up by Trump so he can catch all the Democrats creating fake ballots and throw them in prison.

If your friends are talking about this then I suggest you find new friends.

If they want to live in their own reality let em. We've got shit to do in the real world.
Reminds of me of this anecdote about Karl Rove circa 2004:

The aide said that guys like me were 'in what we call the reality-based community,' which he defined as people who 'believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.' [...] 'That's not the way the world really works anymore,' he continued. 'We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors...and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do'

Consensus reality has never felt quite so subjective

Oh, they're going with blockchain now? I remember when it was radioactive isotopes and magnetic ink. That's how old I am.

I don't think he was. He said buzz off not fuck off. But it sure does sound like fuck off.
Funny thing is.... I was convinced he said "Fuck off". I actually saw him tweet that he said Buzz and rolled my eyes. Then I saw your post and decided to listen again. Sure sounded like Fuck off. Then I closed my eyes and listened. 100% unambiguously Buzz off

I can't remember what the phenomenon is called but the reason why everyone immediately believes he's saying Fuck off is largely because we're reading it as he speaks.

Republicans should look up the term "burden of proof". Or just trust your "everything is fake unless its good for me" god, that'll go over well.

The mail-in ballots DO have unique identifiers. How do you think you can check what happened with your ballot? The "verified by blockchain" specifics are made up, and the "elaborate ruse" part is hilarious though.

24 hour/online "news" plus social media has had a devastating affect on the American psyche. Feels like it's going to take the dismantling of social media to a degree, in conjunction with reinforcing fairness doctrine across all media, to make some kind of dent.

Tax exempt orgs being able to peddle political beliefs from the pulpit also needs to be rectified.

These are the type of people many on Era are still happy to sit down with and shoot the shit with during family get-togethers for fear of upsetting the apple cart.

Any family, blood or not, that espouse these delusional conspiratorial views and traffic in bigotry are not good people who can be rehabilitated unless they want to be.
I finally stopped talking to my mom when I asked how things were going and she was complaining about BLM protests and how dumb they all were and she was glad that the smart black people were speaking up against them...and that was the end of that

The first step to decreasing the influence of Trumpism would be for Donnie himself to keel over from a stroke or coronary.
The movement is a personality cult first and foremost, and absent the personality, it will slowly wither. There is nobody who can pick up the torch. The rest of the Trump family are charisma vampires.
And they have no other substitute either. The industrial barons (Zuck, Musk, Bezos) are thoroughly unlikeable due to their personalities (ironically, same personalities which allowed them become heads of multibillion tech empires), and the Repub second-liners have no media clout.
Donnie truly was a stroke of luck for the Repubs. It helped energize the Big Man-venerating part of their base they had been slowly cultivating for decades, but had recently (cca 2012) started to turn against the establishment. I think, after Romney's defeat, their projections showed that, without somebody energizing that voting portion, their cca 5% vote deficit (compared to the Dem candidate) would remain, despite voter suppression. Donnie managed to prevent that.

Fairness doctrine across ALL media? You sure you want that? Era is media. You want that applied here?

Fox News / News Corp. are delusional if they believe they have the Trump crowd under their control. A huge share of those nutjobs are clearly offset of Fox News already, blaming them of being part of the lame stream media / fake news, especially since they called AZ.

In the coming months, we'll see the rise of other networks like OAN, and some other rightwing networks riding the conspiracy / Qannon train. That's my guess.

You can't imagine the situation in Iran!
LOTS of people think Trump is the real winner and Biden votes are fake. They think Trump will be the next president and will win in this easily!
They even use fake news so bad these days. For example some of the famous Twitter accounts are saying Biden's votes on BBC and CNN were 290 before and now it's 279, but it was 279 on both sites before. Or they talk about a site called RealClearPolitics (I didn't even know about it before) and say Biden went from 290 to 259 on that site! lol
Maybe these things are good for some people though. They think US is an angel who will save us from regime, but when they're seeing Biden as the next president, they'll think US election is corrupted(!) and that'll change their mind about this beautiful angel.

This is right. The issue goes to how each group understands the world. There are no longer any neutral sources of information: for the right, everything is either with the President or it's fake. And there's a whole world of sources, from news channels to talk radio to websites, to cater to that view. Claims are well-supported when they are echoed in venues they trust, and false when they are contradicted in those venues, no matter how much play they get elsewhere from the media, the government, or anything else. Rebutting a single claim won't alter that landscape.

We all take shortcuts to understand the world, because we don't experience everything ourselves. Most of us have cultivated sources that we find generally trustworthy that we rely on to tell us the truth. It seems obvious to me what the outcome of this election is, and how the claims of election fraud so far are largely insubstantial. But I imagine there has to be some dark mirror of me out there convinced that if he could just get these left-wing crazies to sit down and read the Epoch Times for five minutes, he could puncture the carefully crafted information bubble they live in created by Trump's enemies.

I don't know what the solution to this problem is, as any information rebutting a position can only effectively convince people if they're willing to listen to it, which won't happen if the sources they trust tell them it's false.

On one hand, Republicans' faith in voting and elections has dropped a lot based on the results which might depress turnout. GOP members still need to agree with Trump's positions to maintain support among Trump supporters but his current position is to distrust elections. A Catch-22.

On the other hand, how worried should I be. They're building walls around the White House, firing the Secretary of Defense who commented he wasn't enough of a yes man, and sowing discontent among his base. Biden won the popular vote but only by 7 million. That's a fraction of a percent. Is Trump really going to spend the next month trying to setup a coup? Can he do it? Uuuugh.
