I remember getting banned on another forum ages ago because I was hotlinking to stuff I had found on Somethingawful and they had changed the pictures to a close up of a dick ejaculating, and someone found the thread later and reported me for "porn"

I can't believe we don't have a rule against it. Think of all the poor websites losing those megabytes to some supposedly high minded forum that's really full of uncaring slobs!

I remember it being considered kind of rude way back when in the before times, but it's not something I've heard even mentioned in so many years I'd assumed hotlinking was no longer a war crime.

I used to never hotlink, because one time the host changed the gif link to a hell of a lot of exrement coming out of someone's body.

I also got the fear of god drilled into me about hotlinking, so I always upload. I've been using that right click add on for years and it is super easy.

It's the term people used a long ass time ago, I don't think I've seen anyone use it in probably ten years. Only crusty ass people that posted in forums back when Myspace was barely a thing would remember it.
The 90s and 00s were a gloriously wild time
Young People smh. You can't even imagine what the internet once was.

Guys, I'm 36. I had my own Geocities site and a 28.8k modem. Lol. Still not entirely sure what the term hotlink means here. Haha. Like, linking to an image/ GIF whenever it's hosted? Doesn't everyone do that all the time?

gify/tenor exists for a reason.
And they allow for you to search for the perfect gif.

I used to host 'em, but I got lazy over the years, especially when you'd just get dedicated gif makers (especially in the case of the ever giffable wrasslin') and the sites that are basically a gif library (of often middling quality but oh well).

So when my previous posts end up as a barrage of degenerate hentai or something, that's the price I'll have to pay for playing with fire.
On firefox, "Imgur-Uploader". You can link to your account so the image is saved there, and also turn on "Auto upload to clipboard" so that you immediately have the link copied and ready to paste.
Mind you, this will be useful for adding to my evergreen gifs

Yeah but back then people would host them on their own website and they'd pay for the bandwidth, so anyone "hotlinking" from their website was essentially stealing their bandwidth.

Its why people would make it so porn or other stuff showed up when people hot linked from their website.

I always try to upload Frinkiac gifs to Imgur first, because Frinkiac is a valuable service and I don't want to put that bandwidth load on them. Even though Imgur blocks the "upload via url" option for them and other highly-used sites.

I always rehost my gifs and pictures on imgur. I don't exactly know why, mostly in fear of the gif/picture getting taken down eventually?
But yeah, it's a habit I can't shake apparently.

What I find funny about imgur is that I use it mostly as a rehosting site but sometimes forget to make it private or whatever, so I'll get downvotes for the random shit I put there. lol

Ah, I gotcha. So I guess, I mean, to answer the thread question, yes, I link to wherever I found the image/GIF. Lol. Always have. Ain't nobody got time to re-host.

I've seen people still doing this recently even though it's easier than ever to rehost gifs. Unfortunately I haven't seen any hot linked images get swapped with porn pics in years. Those were the good old days. What a thrill. You felt alive hot linking your memes! So who is a dirty hot linking punk leaving broken urls all over the internet?

Era doesn't allow uploading of pics. So I hotlink.

It's all Era's fault.

It's easy to download a picture, upload it with minimgur real quick and use that, and saves the high probability that whatever I'm wanting to link to might not work on here. I'm a firm truthful "no."

What's the worry? That future generations aren't going to be able to enjoy my reaction gif in a throwaway thread?

Just to report this one.
On firefox, "Imgur-Uploader". You can link to your account so the image is saved there, and also turn on "Auto upload to clipboard" so that you immediately have the link copied and ready to paste.
You don't need to set up an account if you don't want and if you change the setting to automatically copy to clipboard it's literally just a case of right-click on image and choose 'Upload to imgur' rather than 'Copy image location', and you can paste it straight into a post.
