So I was listening to D4L by Drake, Future and Young Thug

I was cautiously optimistic because I wasn't super keen on Young Thug and Future's Super Silmey mixtape a few years back but then I just gave this a go and shit goes hard

"What the hell is this and why is it my favorite thing now?" was my reaction to CHON for the first time.

This isn't a song everyone would appreciate unless they like progressive bluegrass, which is obviously a pretty niche genre, but this song puts a smile on my face no matter what. In fact I'm the person who had to upload this video to youtube 10 years ago because the album version wasn't on there.

The first time I heard this song, I just stopped what I was doing and listened to it on repeat. It was kinda like that scene in Ghost World when Enid finds Devil Got My Woman. I just fell in love with the song and every time it comes up, I pretty much just stop everything I'm doing and just listen.

The context matters a bit here. They released this single after about three years of silence and two of those years were with no vocalist. Then they dropped this with the new vocalist, one from a band people already liked, and I fell in love. Perfect lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation.

7 years ago I knew nothing about electronica and DnB in general. This song - this goddamn song however has started a love affair with the genre I don't see ending anytime soon.

FUCK this song slaps so hard

Not since around 2005 when I heard this masterpiece on the radio. Blew my mind. I had no idea music could be that dynamic.

The minute I heard that cowbell I knew this song was would be burrowed in my skull for at least the rest of the week. I was right.

"What the hell is this and why is it my favorite thing now?" was my reaction to CHON for the first time.

I take every opportunity to show CHON to the world. Been listening to them since 2011 when a buddy showed me their 8(?) track demo. They always manage to out-do themselves.

Most recent for me is probably Drunk II by Mannequin Pussy, early last year

It's been a while since I've had that feeling. The last one that I recall was probably back in 2008 or 2009. I was cleaning the interior of my car outside my crappy Boston apartment with the radio playing. Bob Dylan had a program where he was playing some of his favorite songs. I came into one song half way through, but was transfixed. Didn't catch the name of the track or the artist, so I memorized a few lyrics and searched online. Took a while because I kept getting results for a Grateful Dead song called Sugaree, but eventually I found it.

Taylor Swift - Style.

Yes, posting that commercial was on purpose. Before the album came out, this was the first time the public had heard the song. And the commercial started playing in Target stores before it was uploaded online. There were a couple of hours there where I was losing my mind to a phone recording made in a Target store.

Then there was that time that Kanye held one laptop up to another one he was live streaming from to play a little bit of a very early version of All of the Lights.

I came across both of these songs relatively close to each other, and they kind of defined my taste in music for years after. Still some of my faves.

I found this in the listentothis subreddit and instantly fell in love. I usually listen to it 4 or 5 times while brushing my teeth and showering. It gives me all the dance vibes.

Heard this song on the radio, and was hooked instantaneously. I slept on The Weeknd (pardon the pun) which makes sense, because I haven't been keeping up with music. But I'm a sucker for synthpop, so this song clicked instantly.

Sure, a bunch of songs.

But for one in particular, I was absolutely floored by this:

This one is intentionally cheesy, but somehow it hit me in just the right spot.
The music with the racing commentary just got me revved up.

Another from the same album that's also corny but is so fun is 'The Perfect product'

Then there's this one..

I heard this juicy saxophone in my synthwave and was obsessed for awhile, specifically the instrumental version of the album.

Upon first hearing this I knew I had a new favorite everything. And I was right as the whole album is nonstop greatness.

Found this album via the credits music to Blazing Chrome (The Danger). Whole album is good, but Deepest Blue and The Danger are my favorites. They're a bit too similar really, but they're so good.

This is the most recent one for me. I had come across Cirice first, and I liked it, but then I heard Square Hammer and that got me hooked on Ghost.

Paul van Dyk's Love mix of "Love Stimulation" by Humate is a song I heard in a classic Trance documentary and stopped me in my tracks. It was one of the few times I feel I found a piece of music that was the sort of sound I was trying to find forever. It feels like such a pure expression of emotion I love it so much.

When I first heard Night Fever's Denied, I was blown away. I had to find a way to listen to everything they'd recorded.

Some 6 or 7 or 8 years ago I knew nothing about synthwave. The first album that made me go "hm?" on this style was Random Access Memories by Daft Punk, because of Giorgio By Marauder:

youtu.be

Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder (Official Audio)

Official video for “Giorgio by Moroder” by Daft PunkHomework: https://daftpunk.lnk.to/Homework Discovery: https://daftpunk.lnk.to/DiscoveryAlive 1997: https:...

That made me go deep into Soundcloud, YT, Bandcamp.. that's where I found FM 84, The Midnight, Lazerhawk, Vector Hold, Dynatron, Quixotic, Miami Nights 1984, Droid Bishop, Myrone, Neon Nox, NightStop, Carpenter Brut, Night-Runner, Wice, Timecop 1983, Ollie Wride, Mitch Murder, Flash Arnold, Le Matos etc.

I had my found my absolute favorite genre of music. It still hasn't grown old on me. And two of my favorite songs from this period of time are these ones:

youtu.be

LEBROCK - Dangerous Dreams

No idea how I came across let's eat grandma but their second album has shot up to being one of the best. Could listen to almost any song hundred of times.
