Is the Superhero an "American Mythology"?

Yes they do. Superheroes are regularly used as archetypes and allegories for moralistic storytelling.

Paul Bunyan, Pocahontas, and Johnny Appleseed, George Washington's cherry tree, Abe Lincoln's honesty, and Benjamin Franklin's kite in a lightning storm--I would say are part of the American mythology. Even Sasquatch, Area 51, and the Illuminati.

Comic books are iffy though. Like many have said, we know that they're fictional and aren't widely believed to be true.
