I figured those were just licensed tracks, but he handpicked them.
I was so upset that Smash Ultimate didn't have this track. I would pay $10 for it as DLC because with this track added Smash Ultimate is basically the perfect nostalgia jukebox for 90's kids like me.

First: Yes, chemical plant is amazing, but for me it's not even the best "Water Level" Sonic music...

i think the series has just about the best music of any long-running game franchise.
Ehhhhhhhh I wouldn't put it in top five Sonic 2 tracks.
If you were wondering, I prefer Sky Chase, Casino Night, Aquatic Ruin, Hill Top, Metropolis, and Death Egg off the top of my head.

Man this thread just cements the fact that Sonic music is generally top-tier stuff. The soundtracks from Sonic 1 - 3 are all stellar.

3D Blast is always forgotten despite its superior soundtrack.
Chemical Plant Zone and Casino Night Zone are the best pieces of music in the Sonic series, probably in my top 15 or 20 pieces of videogame music.
Sonic has amazing music.
And for the OP, the Mania version is much better
And I'd say many Sonic songs are some of the best, too many to count

I came here to post this. I played Generations the day it came out and I can't tell you how awesome it was to play a 3D sonic title I actually enjoyed. Not only enjoyed, but got that familiar adrenaline rush I got when I first played the original titles.
Green Hill Zone got me pumped. Then Chemical Plant's classic remix hit...
If only they sped up the modern remix. It was fun at first but I lost interest after playing it for a few...dozen...times.

Sonic Generations low-key had the best OST of any game the last couple of gens without the words "Super Mario Galaxy" in them somewhere.
Rooftop Run (Classic) is one of the great video game tracks of all time, nevermind Sonic tracks.
I thought Rooftop Run had incredible tracks, both classic and modern. That rail grinding transition from the clock tower to the ground level was one of my most memorable moments in a 3D sonic title.
Yes! I almost mentioned this very thing. My wife would stop what she was doing and look at it when she was in the room. All the balloons flying as you come over the top of the rail is just lovely.
Fuck, I loved Sonic Generations.
There's a vaporwave band named Opus Science Collective whose music reminds me so much of the classic 16-bit game music, especially Sonic 2.

Yes, it certainly is, but not just gaming. That goes for a lot of the best video game music; it's some of the best music out there period, not just "in gaming." Tha's doing way too many brilliant VGM composers a huge disservice!
