Deniro and its not even close.

Lets all remember Leo was also outshined in Gangs of New York by another GOAT called Daniel Day Louis.

Leo is a breezy frozen margarita with an umbrella straw you have on taco Tuesdays, Deniro is primo single malt scotch whisky.
2nd paragraph is a poor example given that Daniel Day Lewis is arguably the greatest actor of his generation. He is basically the male Meryl Streep. Deniro and Dicaprio are great, but no DDL.

And if you're comparing Deniro career to Leo's since the 2000s then yeah, you've already fucked up and skewed it in the wrong direction. Deniro has had a shit ton of classic movies in the 70s, 80s and 90s. And a bunch In the 2000s even though he's definitely picked worse movies In the last 20 years.

The godfather 2
The deer hunter
Taxidriver
Goodfellas
Raging bull
Once upon a time in America
Casino
The king of comedy
Goodfellas
Heat
Etc. So many.

I mean... crazy good. Few actors can compare to that list of movies and the diverse roles he's played.

And he's looking to top off his career with The Irishman and another classic with Leo. Dude is a top 5 of all time. Leo a top 50 or 30.

I consider picking movies a skill for a great actor, everyone over looks it. Once you're big, like real big, you can do any movie you want essentially. Making the right decisions can make you Leo, making the wrong ones can make you Gerard Butler (so much potential)

Want to hate Leo, but he's fucking amazing. Not sure if he's the best, but he's in the conversation that asshole.

It was a tongue in cheek joke. Basically saying if Leo were a GOAT actor he wouldn't ever be overshadowed in a role, like he was in Gangs. Leo is great, but i'm not ready to crown him yet.

De Niro has so many famous roles but it's The King of Comedy that sticks in my mind and really shows De Niro's range. He managed to act so creepily in that movie, so sad and unnerving, so different from everything else he's done.

Leo hasn't done that sort of role yet.
Yep one of his best roles and shows off his knack of inhabiting different types of characters really well.

Heard good things about his role in Awakenings too.

He plays one character well? Hell no. He could particularly good a certain type of character, but that doesn't mean he has no range
Perhaps your wording is better than mine. I don't think Deniro has no range. It's just not as broad as Dicaprio's. As you said yourself, Deniro plays a certain type of character particularly well.

I hear you. The question posed wasn't one of who is GOAT. It's comparing Deniro to Dicaprio. Based on what I have seen, Dicaprio is better at different types of roles than Deniro. DDL trumps them both.

Yeah, I can see that. Leo has excellent range, that's more a reflection on his abilities though rather than Deniro's lack thereof

DDL is essentially Calculon with the proper software installed, no one compares. Haven't really seen much of Laurence Olivier

Prime De Niro is easily one of the best american actor of all time. Not a lot can match up his 70's-80's streak. Certainly not Dicaprio, which he certainly does a good job as a leading man, but does not even come close to the levels of De Niro when it comes to adding depth and subtle emotions to a character.

Fell down a rabbit hole, my god at Scorcese's imdb. It's otherworldly, unfortunately if someone doesn't like "gangster" movies alot of the list wouldn't appeal. Although I do think there's variety

De Niro is a much better actor with a stronger filmography (even with the major duds in his post 2000s career). DiCaprio is just okay in comparison.

While Leo can act he doesn't possess the inherent magnetism of say De Niro or Denzel Washington. He sure knows how to pick a role though.

I hope prefer DeNiro to DDL as well tbh who despite his method style appears theatrical to me. DeNiro is a master of saying so much while doing so little with his body or voice.

This is my own completely subjective take: Leo is great but he never melts into a role for me the way De Niro does. I think this is tainted by Titanic for me, it was a huge first impression and his acting in that movie is straight out of the Star Wars prequels.

He's obviously massively improved since, and he's great pretty much in everything he's in, but vintage Bobby D is on a completely different level. Especially in his early roles where he's so young and spidery and passionate, he really sells something going on behind the eyes in a way Leo doesn't for me. With him I still see the well-trained former child actor in there.

I don't think De Niro has "melted" into a role since maybe Heat or Jackie Brown. He's been mostly on cruise control for the past two decades.

Deniro has a far bigger range than Leo. But Deniro also has years on Leo. I think Leo has a fair shot.

They're both great at what they do, and them being involved usually puts a movie on my must see list. That rarely happens with other actors.

I always feel like I see Leonardo DiCaprio when I see his movies. I know it sounds stupid and I cant explain it properly but while with some actors I see the character they play, I always just see Leonardo DiCaprio acting as someone else instead of the character.
Thats not to say I dont think hes a good actor because he is really great and it shows that he gives himself 100% in his movies.
But I feel like there are a lot of better actors, DeNiro being one of them.

As much as I like 70-80's era DeNiro Leo just has more range and nuance to his acting ability.

Watching Leo in The Aviator he got so deep into that role.

Also DeNiro and Leo have acted together in a great movie called "This Boys Life," both did amazing in it and DeNiro was one mean sonfabitch too.

As good as? Yeah, probably. They're both amazing. Leo is still young and it seems his output has started to really kick off in the last few years.

Great question but I have to give the nod to De Niro. The dude was all world in his younger years. I will say that recently im putting Joaquin Phoenix up there with De Niro and Leo. I love his style.

Many of you haven't seen much of DeNiro's work and it shows. Brilliant actors, both of them, we're fortunate to have them.

No, he isn't. I don't think DiCaprio has more range than De Niro though he probably thinks he has.

He is definitely at his best when he is playing playboy-like characters like Rick Dalton and Jordan Belfort. He feels miscast and his perfomance comes across as forced in a lot of historical films like J.Edgar, The Gangs of New York, Shutter Island and The Revenant.
