I was walking to class the other day and in the middle of campus there was an anti-abortion group demonstrating. This is nothing new as that space is rented out for speeches and other things all of the time but this time they had a giant TV set-up playing a montage of speeches made by Martin Luther King Jr. but edited to make it sound like he was talking about being against abortion. Apparently their slogan is "all lives are equal" or something.

Is this a common thing to do amongst these groups? Because fuck them.

I dislike people who try to control others with a passion... I didn't know about that but nowadays everything is used to manipulate people...

Yes, it's common for anti abortion people to be disingenuous assholes.
1st post get it.

We're having a debate on extending reproductive assistance to everyone in France and they're using arguments made to defend access to birth control to be homophobic assholes.

Being disingenuous is their only play.

if all lives are equal then the fetus doesn't have any more a right to use your body as anyone else would have, guess they didn't think that one through

the truth is they don't want all lives to be equal, they want the unborn to have special rights

MLK has been sanitized for decades to the point that his anti-capitalist stance has been almost completely ignored.

I've definitely seen 'I have a dream..' attempted to be likened to a fetus' hopes and dreams for their future, yes.

Just as common as anti-vaxxers using it, so yes, very common, a common link of stupidity and ignorance.

Pro gun people do it as well. These are people with arguments that defy logic and facts. They will use everything and anything to try to make valid points. It's hard to be against what MLK stood for therefore they use him to reinforce their views.

Yes. I'm only speaking for myself and what I've personally observed over the years, but the antichoice movement has had a record of appropriating just about every human rights struggle with their movement at least as far back as the early 1990's, and not just MLK Jr.. They've compared themselves to Native Americans driven off their lands. They've compared themselves to feminists from the 1800's, with a prominent antichoice group naming themselves the Susan B. Anthony List. And they've even compared themselves to holocaust victims. Why have they done this? Maybe it's because they could never persuade people to err on their side based on their own merits. Also, keep in mind that I began hearing this bullshit at around the time doctors were getting threatened by these assholes. So when doctors were getting killed, the media would interview these prominent pieces of shit like Randall Terry and Troy Newman to get their take, and you could see their smug satisfaction, even if they never outright encouraged their followers to commit murder. But they would always compare abortion with slavery and the holocaust. Always.

White people love using MLK quotes inappropriately.

I doubt it's uncommon, for anti human rights people are not above using anything to support their backwards beliefs. Everything.gif

When they can't win over the mass populace based on the truth, yes. If abortion was tragic, you'd think they could make that argument based on the merits alone. You never see jews stepping on the black community to make a case that the holocaust was a global and moral tragedy or vice versa.

White people will appropriate MLK for literally any purpose, so yes. I've seen him used to advocate against gun control of all things. "If more good guys with guns had been around..."

It's common for white racists to appropriate Martin Luther King for their racist arguments, so yeah I'm sure all kinds of other groups use him to prop up regressive shit. No idea what his actual views on abortion were though.

Someone in the Brandt Jean thread said that MLK might have hugged Amber Guyger, the same Guyger who joked about MLK's assassination at a MLK Parade. It's fucking stupid. I'm still not over it.
If MLK was still alive he would be the most hated man in America. People love white washing him cause he can't correct them.

Eh, I wouldn't be surprised if Zionists did something like this. I'm willing to bet it's probably happened before. That's kind of the problem with making statements like "Jews wouldn't do x". Just like any group, Jewish people aren't a monolith

I really wish he is alive today to call people out on their shit. I really hate right wing appropriation of his speeches.

It's common in general for white folks to appropriate or completely distort the black Civil Rights movement for their own ends. Abortion, platforming far-right shitlords on private platforms, veganism, anti-vaccine beliefs. You name it, there's a covenient magical Negro to try and justify it.

Yes. They model the "March for Life" where the incident with the Covington kids happened, after his March on Washington and hold it on his holiday weekend.

They also compare it to the holocaust a lot.

And unfortunately it works. The thing is, taking away safe ways to abort will cause so many to die or horribly injure themselves like before. The cycle will continue all because of "I'm a situational pro-lifer. I don't want you to prevent a baby from being born, but I'm ok with the baby starving, people dying in wars, and people seeking asylum to be eaten by alligators, burned on hot fences, drowned, or murdered by whatever it is they are running from."

What school? I know my school (CSULB) also has an anti-abortion demonstration group that's causing quite the controversy right now but I really haven't been to that side of campus to witness it.

It's just as DIZ says. People interested in forcing oppression onto disenfrancised people and/or silencing disenfranchised people who speak out/act against their oppression, love to co-opt MLK as a bludgeon. Anti-choice people already use their own savior as a bludgeon to rob women of agency so they have zero scruples about using anyone that's convenient.

Forced birthers also enjoy comparing a woman deciding to end her pregnancy on her own accord to governmental policies such as China's one child law.
