With regards to educating people, I'd like to point out that you can only claim to be ignorant once. After something's explained to you, you can ask more details, but the moment you go "but what about" you're showing that you're actually entrenched in a position.
As such, it's prudent - difficult, perhaps, and especially so for someone who has an emotional investment in the issue, but prudent nonetheless - to make one effort to try to inform someone. But past that point, it's up to the other party to decide if they want to accept the information given or if they would prefer to dig in their heels.
