The experience you had in your first paragraph is why I'm wary to send it in to Nintendo even with their free repair that they're finally offering. Like, it's great that it will be fixed for free (as it should), but if it's not permanent, what's the point? I can fuck with the Joycon's guts myself at home for a temporary fix; at least then I don't have to wait a week and some change to use them again afterwards, only to have it start drifting again in a few months.

I haven't experienced drift yet, but I hope the design gets improved to where it is no longer an issue.

I have bigger problem with the sluggish controls if you have to move too far from the system or if your leg happens to be between the Joy-Con and system.

Thankfully I haven't had any major issues with mine outside a physical connection on my right yellow joycon, but I figure it's a matter of time.

And it's a shame, too, because the Joycons are almost my favorite Nintendo control setup of all time outside of the Wii Remote & Nunchuck.

So comfortable.

Had a Switch for about a week and the controllers are the worst ones I have used for recent consoles. Hell, the Jaguar controller was better. Far too small, bad feedback on the buttons and the (hopefully not so quickly) drifting. Having to spend more money on the Pro controllers is a real kick in the junk.

Can anyone even explain the drift thing to me? What does it even mean? I've had one since launch and am so in the dark -- did get new joycons for Christmas last year but only because I love the Splatoon ones.

I use a pro controller when it's on the dock and have never actually removed the joycons while playing it off the dock.

Basically you move a character (or the camera) to one direction and it stays moving in that direction, ergo a 'drift'.

Edit: I just realised that's a terrible explanation. I'm sure someone will just link a video showing it soon enough but yeah the sticks aren't the best basically.

Basically, the game is registering stick movement when the sticks aren't being moved.

Its basically where your controller stick steadily moves in the game, even though it might be central on the controller. Many games give you options to tweak how sensitive it is but I am guessing Nintendo dont have that.

My son need help with the racing parts in crash 3 and I couldn't believe how fuckin uncomfortable it is to press the zr button with the 2 joycons together. I have small hands but my index finger has to bend in such an uncomfortable way to press it. They're obviously designed for kids hands. Try aiming with those sticks in fortnite or any fps or tps game. It's ridiculous. Can't stand these garbage controllers honestly.

To be fair, Crash 3's Racing sections are really awful regardless of drift.

Do we know what the design flaw is so we can tell if they sneak it in a joy con revision?
It's a problem with the stick part used. The metal prongs that make contact with the graphite pads scratch them, filling the space with detritus.

I have this exact same issue and boy is it annoying.
I've seen third party metal replacements, but I had a bad experience disassembling a joycon before, so I'm not gonna worry about it.

You didn't see any graphite because there is no graphite!

Ya those levels were bullshit. I thought my son was just ass. But I'm not talking about the drift. Pressing zr or whatever the button is, feels so unnatural. No way designed with adult hands in mind.

How about the fact that you can't get a reliable connection to the switch with a Joycon at 10 feet?

I only use my Joy-Cons in handheld mode, so there's only really one way to hold the system. I don't even use my Switch that much, I'd say 250 hours of use, max, between these Joy-Con sticks breaking down. From what everyone else has described, what I'm experiencing is bog standard Joy-Con drift due to the graphite pads wearing down. And no I don't forcefully mash my sticks or anything like that, I'd say I'm fairly gentle with my Switch and I store it in a hard-shell carrying case after each use.
It's truly unfortunate, but really easy to fix. I bought one of those electronic contact cleaner sprays, sprayed both joycons (no disassembly needed), and drift is gone. In a month or two or three it may be back, but the spray application takes less than a minute.

These issues make me scratch my head. Of course it has to depend on the failure percentage, but I always wonder why they don't discover these problems before launch? Especially the 360 in particular since that problem affected basically every other console.

The Unlocked discussion with Peter Moore, Seamus Blackley, and Phil Spencer pops up in my head:

- We had to do it in a first class way. Because when you take away a console from a gamer and you're gonna spend three weeks fixing it...
- They'd rather have poisoned tylenol!

I see what you're saying. Coincidentally I've had this happen with my new PS4 Dualshock I got (the Deku one if you will). It's really annoying so I can see how it would be frustrating people. I guess so far I've been lucky with my Switch.

Yea I been experiencing the popular drift when I play Fire Emblem. Happens a lot, I would have to touch the joystick to stop it from drifting. I don't know where to go for that fix people are mentioning though.

I tested it on like 10 other games, as well as the calibration menu and couldn't replicate it. DOOM must be super sensitive.
DOOM must lack the incredibly oversized deadzones inherent to nearly the entire rest of Switch's shooter slate.

And those oversized deadzones are such a ubiquitous thing that it must have been a standard suggested to developers by Nintendo. Which in turn suggests to me that Nintendo knew more than they let on, from the outset.

When drifting started for me, it was only in Diablo III, so I honestly thought it was some kind of bug (never had drift in any controller before). Then later it started in other games as well as the system menu. I think it can possibly start to manifest in some titles early due to different dead zone sensitivity before it becomes a full blown issue.

I hate the flex/wobble of the joycons. When they're new, they're nice and tight. But after a month, the wobble occurs and it drives me crazy :\

I bought my Switch day one. I haven't had any drifting on those cons or the second set I bought last Thanksgiving. However I do have the wireless interference, and I need send my left con in for the mesh update.

I guess this is a silly question, but has anyone experienced stick drift in the Hori dpad Joy-Con? (Silly, because like me, people probably use it for the dpad and because it's likely the very same stick as in the standard Joy-Cons).

Ironically, I have had zero drift so far, but I don't play my Switch enough to be affected. The major issue I have with them is the really shitty plastic tab that keeps the joycon docked to the system. The one on my left joycon never was good, so a minor bump undocks the joycon.

For such an expensive ass controller, they sure use some subpar parts.

The drift issue is worrying me about picking up a Switch Lite, too. I mean, what if they use the same parts in that? I'll have to send the whole damn console in for repair.
I have this exact same problem on two different joycons.

No drift here as well.

Angola / Zaire border region.
I've never been a fan of the Joy-Cons, even when fully functioning. I have found a way to avoid using them for every major game that I have put a lot of hours into:

PRO CONTROLLER
Breath of the Wild
Mario Odyssey
Splatoon 2
Mario Kart
DKC Tropical Freeze

8BITDO SN30
NSMBU Deluxe
Mario Maker 2

USB GAMECUBE-STYLE CONTROLLER
Smash Ultimate

I've been looking but can't find this anywhere—can third party controllers power on the console? I the last time I used a third party controller for anything was back in the PS3 days, and that was a common limitation.

idk I wouldn't call them "garbage". They're great little pieces of tech hampered by issues that a large minority of players are facing. Issues with them don't make them garbage; they're not falling apart or electrocuting people or anything like that, just having some issues.

I was tired of them on day one when I realized that they start delaying/dropping inputs at any slightest sign of interference that any other wireless controller in the past 15 years weren't affected by.

I think it sucks that people are having problems, between the 3 Switch's and 10 sets of Joycons in my house, we haven't had a single issue.

I haven't had any issues with my pairs which justifiably would colour one's opinion, but I fucking LOVE my Joycons. Even with my big mitt hands they feel really comfy, especially split.

Out of warranty and will have to either buy a new controller or pay 2/3rd the price of a controller to get this design flaw fixed, only for it to crop up again in 6-12 months. Fuck Nintendo until they offer free repairs in Europe. The Switch lineup has been the most unreliable series of Nintendo hardware I've ever owned.

Watch this: It kept doing this after I pushed the stick into one of the directions. The calibration tool is good to notice this stuff, I wish other consoles had it as well.

Does Canada get the free repair? Cause my left controller has been shit since the day I bought my switch. Seriously it's some garbage construction and I have no idea how it can be defended

how large of a minority that experiences unusable controllers within a year of normal use has to exist in order to label something garbage in your opinion

Minority of people? Seriously? This is affecting a great deal of switch users. Class action lawsuits don't start for a minority of people
It's very unfortunate that this is a thing and I sympathise with those affected, but that 'great deal' is still a minority, by definition. There are 37 million Switches out there.

I still haven't had any drift but it seems it's an inevitable "feature" that will appear sooner rather than later. It's unacceptable they keep selling this and at a high price to add insult to injury.

I can't believe that happened to you twice, Jesus. That's incredibly frustrating. My bf and I have 8 joycons between us and every single one of them has a drifting issue. We've had to sit and calibrate 16 sticks a handful of times with friends over. It's really really really bad. I'm scared to send them all in because I've heard them of them just sending them back as-is. I'm shocked to hear so many people don't have this problem coz it's literally ALL of mine lol

I'm thinking it's a product of (shit design but also) heavier use, coz we play our Switches a lot.

Primary suspect is the contact pads.

The graphite is too soft, so tiny graphite particles rub off, causing the drift.
