I don't know, Super Mario Odyssey is the last perfect game I can think of. Can't think of a fake that made me grin like an idiot while playing it as much as Odyssey.

I don't get the love. Revelations 2 is leagues better in every regard, particularly the core gameplay.

Rofl, these takes are starting to sizzle. I like Rev2, but it's like, a lower budget title with absolutely nothing special going for it in terms of gameplay. It even has a dodge button. There is zero tension.

Re4 is a masterclass in encounter design. The control scheme might be dated now, but the game controls really well if you get used to it.

A dodge button is zero tension but roadhouse kicks and suplexes somehow aren't?

I Always move while shooting in RE2. Thanks Capcom for the mouse+kb version...
You do realise you only get a perfect shot in REmake 2 if you're standing still, right? You have to focus your shot. It's a key mechanic.

I've said some negative things about RE2 Remake in this thread, but I'll give credit where it's due thst was implemented really well.

I've tried countless times to get into it and honestly, whatever the appeal is, it's lost on me. I didn't experience it at the time, so I'm unable to appreciate the impact it had at launch, but it doesn't hold up in the modern era in the way that classic RE and Final Fantasy games do.

Plus, it was also responsible for setting a trend that put the franchise on a downward spiral for the next decade, only averted when they took the franchise back to its survival horror roots.

This is once again exactly where I'm at, only i DID play RE4 at release and had the same opinion.

Well this has been quite the development.

My understanding from speaking with those that love it (i own RE6, but don't like it and never finished it) is that RE6 has EXTREMELY fined tuned controls that let you do all kinds of crazy stuff impossible in any other RE, but is SO BAD at explaining these controls (if it does so at all) that most players never get there.

I've been replaying it. It isnt that perfect. Escorting the presidents daughter has been a huge pain in the ass.

It's the full package. It's like nothing good was left out during development. The pacing and gameplay are all really just perfect. I can replay this game over and over again and never really get tired of it. I don't think there is a single thing about it that i dislike.

It's 2019 and this game still puts so many other games to shame, including most future RE games.

This quality is indeed rare but imo Bloodborne is an even greater package

So it has been surpassed and Bloodborne will be surpassed in the future

I recently played through Re4 for the first time and while I enjoyed it I just can't understand how people think it's a perfect game. It's just so flawed but is great despite that. Full of cheap deaths, escort missions, terrible writing and weird controls.

What is more crazy is that it came out around the same time as Half life 2 which is a superior game in every way imo.

RE2R really could have been better, but dropped the ball in a few areas. Close but RE4 wins.
It drops the ball in a lot of areas coming off the original. As a remake I have a lot of issues with it. It's not like the first REmake which offers everything the original did but more and does it better. REmake 1 remains the gold standard for remakes.

Bloodborne is in my top 5 but it runs like ass. Terrible frame pacing and long load times that are made even worse by the game design forcing you to warp around for different reasons. RE4 has no such issues and runs like a dream.

That said, a 60FPS 4K Bloodborne with near-instant load times on next gen may get me to reconsider that.

Agreed. I still loved the game and it could have been great if they didn't cut so much awesome sounding content.

May I ask when is the last time you've played the game? And do you have a pro? I have a decent pc and I'm used to 60fps and I'm using a monitor with zero input latency and that vastly improved my playthroughs. Idk if it's my monitor or boost mode but I can barely notice frame pacing issues or input latency.

I was playing a bit of The Evil Within 2 this weekend and thought to myself, "I think I'd rather play some RE4."

Being a big fan of the first 3 RE games, I wasn't the biggest fan of RE4 upon release but whenever I dip back into it, I can't help but admire how much fun it is to play. They really did something special with that one.

Earth
God of War 2018 comes the closest of giving me the feeling that RE4 gave me in gaming. These games fall into a 'Special Category' like a Mario 64 would.

They rarely come around though. That's the great thing about them. You can't copy & paste them from a development aspect

You don't catch the lightning in the bottle often. Nobody does.

Dead Space 2 is a much better action horror game than Resident Evil 4 is in every regard. It has better shooting mechanics, better narrative, better characters, better set pieces, better horror, better enemies, etc. It is Resident Evil perfected.

There are plenty of games out there that are subjectively better than RE4 and you don't have to look hard to find them.

It's one of the best of all time, but by no means are there no games as good since then.

I agree OP.
Few games reach such perfection.
F-Zero GX
Metroid Prime
Super Mario Galaxy
DK: Tropical Freeze
Metal Gear Solid 3
Uncharted 2
The Last of Us
Halo : CE
REmake
Breath of the Wild
Bloodborne

....that is all (since 2000)

The end of it is a complete shit show though.

Even back when it launched I never enjoyed the escort segments and also felt the game lots some of its luster halfway in. The opening parts are still my favorite.

Dead Space 2 exists. It does everything better plus you can shoot while moving.
And as far as I remember it doesn't have an escort mission.
