Given that NT was not exactly what people wanted, I decided to revisit the OG PSP games through emulation.** While I did enjoy going back to playing Duodecim, I noticed that the game just...doesn't look great upscaled.
I think it's more on the PSP than the art style because the game still looks excellent in general. But it's clear that the limitations of the PSP were not kind in the years since, and it shows. The game is entirely playable this way, of course, but I figured that there had to be an HD texture pack out there as PPSSPP supports them.
To my shock, the only thing I could find was someone else's project which was mostly them filtering the art through an AI upscaler with mixed results. So since I'm unemployed and bored, I decided to take it upon myself.
May I present to you all: my effort at a retexture for Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy (WIP).
This is still very much a WIP but the gist of it is: I'm doing everything I can to maintain the original art style and I'm only using upscaling as a final final resort. Because of this, a lot of the art is being remade by hand as high resolution sources don't exist. This of course means that not everything will be 1:1, but I am trying to maintain the general artstyle and not stray away too much.
Here are some screenshots of my work-in-progress as of about a week ago. I've done quite a bit since, and I will definitely update the thread with new screenshots as I capture them and make progress.
Edit: Since the original post, there's been a lot of updates! Here's some progress shots. Note that some stuff is still WIP/unfinished and will probably change.
To my knowledge, no one really plays this anymore and I'm sure that at most this will be a novelty, but I'm having fun doing it so I figured I'd keep going until I either get bored or give the project to someone else. But for now, I'm going full-steam ahead.
A couple of notes:
1. I'm looking into ways to reduce the size of the UI, as I know for sure it could be smaller. Another side-effect of this game being made for a tiny screen. I may not be able to do it without outside help, but I know it's at least possible with cheat codes.
2. This game handles fonts in a super wonky way, and I don't think it will be possible to upscale all of the fonts manually unless there's some magic method I don't know about. This game doesn't use standard font tables like other games, even games on the same engine like Crisis Core.
Anyways, mods, if this thread is inappropriate, feel free to nuke it.
