Seeing a live action Lalafell is going to be something else.

If they requisition a sack of potatoes, they have a cast of dozens ready to go.

The ambition to have the show evolve alongside the game is nice and all, but if they don't get the wellie out, the main story will probably be finishing up before the first season is airing.

It's pretty simple, a FFVII adaptation would have never ever be good enough, and everyone would be complaining about this or that. With XIV they can kinda do whatever they want in term of story cause it's more flexible i guess

An XIV series has a lot of potentisl given the history of that setting and how many big events we've never actually seen or been a part of.

That being said I also feel like it would have to be really expensive.

I'm still worried about a few things but it's good to see that there is still talk about this project after it's announcement a few months or so ago. I'm mostly just worried about artstyle transitions of some elements to live action, like Lalafells. Otherwise a FFXIV side story seems like a cool idea.

Somewhat off topic but give "Dad(Daddy) of light" a chance. It's on Netflix and based on a true story that was blogged.

I'm very on board for this so long as they keep it pretty divorced from the plot of the games, so everyone's WoL can be canon. I'm all for minor characters crossing over both ways, though.

Ideally I'd have the first season be set in Eorzea and focus on casual adventurin', maybe introduce a unique Ascian just for them to contend with. There is so much lore there really doesn't need to be any overlap, outside of referencing major events that have happened in the expansions.

I can just see it being canned due to the expense though. Game of Thrones had a crazy budget and could barely afford to put in a slightly-bigger wolf on screen after a certain point. Though at least FFXIV is never really about major battles, unless they have a flashback to the Dalamud stuff, and that seems to have been the most sigificant expenditure there.

Unlikely they would do a story set during 1.X.

Considering they seem to want to do stuff based on expansions, they would need to set it at 2.X era at minimum.

They could do flashbacks to 1.X stuff if any of the characters are sufficiently old enough.
Well I'll keep an open mind to the possibility on the account that The Witcher Netflix series is based on the books which are apparently a prequel to the games.

Imagining some live action monsters like Malboro or Behemoth. Man I really want to see this now.

Clearly the most important thing to see in live action is Hildibrand. It can be the holiday special.

Edit: And it's important that once the episode is done, your not sure if that was real or a fever dream.

TOO MANY CHOCOBOS ARE NEVER ENOUGH

Also, I found myself really enjoying Dad of Light. I watched it after not playing XIV in a long time...I should check it out again now that the game has me in its clutches again.

Alright folks. For characters that have a likely chance to show up... Who do you cast that is reasonable?

Note that considering the English dub uses European actors from across the board, it's very likely they might try to reach out to a similar pool considering this is an obviously a show written and produced in English.

Currently we know Cid will show up. So we need someone who can look older but is actually younger? Maybe?

They should title the show A Realm Reborn, not Final Fantasy XIV, IMO.

This has the potential to end poorly, but it would be great if it was good.

They chose the wrong one, FFVIII was perfect for a live action series/movie.
Students, modern buildings and vehicles, locations, were all easier to be shot since they look like modern days.

the problem is that you have to follow the story of FFVIII. XIV's world allows for way more stories to be told.

So here's my idea for what they could do with the show that might be interesting.

FF14 Spoilers
Since Cid is the first person we see, the main character, should be a Garlean who defected sometime pre-Heavensward but post-ARR 2.0. They knew Cid by reputation and sought him out for help. Cid drops him off in Ul'dah (or any of the city-states) and basically gives him the rundown of how things work outside the Empire. Knowing of his fighting skills, Cid uses his influence to convince Raubahn to let him sign up with the Immortal Flames to help him get on his feet. Raubahn is hesitant due to the MC being a Garlean but is willing to let him due to it being Cid whose asking.

So the first season is the MC helping out the Immortal Flames, learning what it's truly like to live in the Alliance. Raubahn wouldn't be a constant appearance, showing up here and there. The main core cast would be Immortal Flames and locals in Ul'dah and surrounding areas. Then the ending of the season would feature a bit of the Celebration and Raubahns imprisonment which would make the MC start to have a crisis of faith that he had built up. This would then lead into Season 2 where they could incorporate elements of Heavensward and so on.

Granted this might be a bit hard since if it featured the Celebration they'd have to deal with the WoL problem but I think they could write around that.

everyone's vigorously slapping a T-bone steak against their inner thighs over the thought of cat and bunny girls in real life, but you haven't thought of the horror that will be adapting potato people into live action.

I don't understand why they chose FFXIV and not an FF game with mostly human characters. It's going to be so hard to pull off Lalafell and Roegadyn without making them look stupid.

Just make it CSI Garlend Works where the team has to figure out how the warrior of light murdered the hell out of the latest primal threat.

Roegadyn's are just bigger humans. It wouldn't be that hard.

Also because FFXIV has a much larger and more fleshed out world then other FF's with the only two being of similar scope are FFXI and FFXII, all three of which share the same problem.

FF14 makes more sense over FF7 anyway. There's room to play around in that world, I imagine it's more fleshed out with years of lore and backstory, and is less centralized on specific characters, while FF7 would basically have to be an adaptation of the game or be some kind of periphery story at the mercy of the game's story (and if not, then why bother?).

I totally forgot this was a thing and I'm pretty excited for it personally. We need more magic meets sci-fi fantasy worlds on TV.

I hadn't realized that Hivemind is one of the companies behind the production of The Expanse.

Interest levels rising.

I could see it, though I dunno if they'd make the MC genetically Garlean since they'd have to make-up a third eye or give them an Iconic Hat. Which wouldn't be bad, I suppose, I just figure they'll go with a pretty standard lead visually.

Thanalan definitely probably makes the most sense as a central location though, it's probably the easiest of the bunch to make sets for and find shooting locations in the US.

If no character says: "Pray return to the Waking Sands", then this show will be a 0/10.
