Was hoping that X would be above XII but I expected this result. I'm honestly surprised they didn't put Persona 4 as #1 but glad they didn't. Solid list overall. PS2 had a lot of great RPGs.
7. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
3. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
I'd say...FFX. It's a nice blend of modern and traditional, and while it may not have some of the best parts of the genre (like a fully developed world map, for instance), it does offer a great introduction to the kind of combat and story which is fairly typical of the genre without deviating into aspects which people would identify elsewhere (like how VP2, while amazing, shares some DNA with puzzle platformers and even fighting games). FFX also has a good amount of secrets, and a good degree of difficulty right off the bat.Excuse the thread jack but, what would be a good J-RPG to play if you don't have any previous experience in the genre?

Obviously there are games which do more/different things with all three of those aspects [exploration, story, combat], and it's hard to say it (or any game) is *representative* of the genre, but I still do think it makes for a good intro.
It could be on any platform, honestly. If possible not Switch or PS4 since I don't have the former and games for the latter are kind of expensive here.
Always regret never playing it through a second time to try and get the different endingKnew it would be niche for such a list but I personally really loved Radiata Stories. It's still my favorite game for the system. There are so many recrutable characters, the NPCs have their own daily/weekly schedule thats fun to learn, and the split routes that you have to choose between mid-way through the game are built up really well.
I mentioned the ones I at least finished an didn't hate. I also played Shining Force Neo, Suikoden 3 and Xenosaga an they all sucked ass lol.You played nothing then if you think that half a dozen out of well over 100 is all the system had in terms of rpgs.
I'd put FFX over BD and LO for sure - LO in particular feels like it's cribbing pretty hard from FFX, although it's still fine - but I haven't played NNK. I hear it gets kinda grindy and irritating around the halfway mark though.Thank you! My obvious choices were Blue Dragon, Lost Odissey or Ni no Kuni. Would you put any of those before your own choice?
Chrono Trigger is really good as a gateway to the genre and is available on PC, Smartphones, Nintendo DS, PS1 aside the original Snes version.

If I were to suggest other genre mainstays off the PS2, I'd go with...hmm...Chrono Trigger, Golden Sun 2, and...Tales of Vesperia. That last one is a bit of an outlier, as it could be argued that turn based combat is heavily featured in the genre, but while that might be true, it's far from the only battle system, and Tales is a classic action twist on things while still staying pretty close to the rest of the typical considerations of the genre.
Thank you. Apparently the DS version is the one to get. Do you know if it can be played on the Wii U?
The idea that there can be a definitive, objective list of the ten best is quite silly.
I know FFXII is pretty well loved (even I just bought my third copy this week, Switch version) but I feel like it's had a huge resurgence lately.
I still think to this day that Shadow Hearts Covenant has one of the best JRPG protags of all time.
Imo you're not missing much playing the OG version on a big screen.Thank you. Apparently the DS version is the one to get. Do you know if it can be played on the Wii U?
This RG is amazing
I figured, from your selection. I mean, truth be told, there are tons of great JRPGs to be had which increasingly start folding in aspects of other genres and indeed, there've been many mentioned in this topic already. Going with just a few right off that bat though, I'd start with the 4 I mentioned and see how you're feeling about the genre. It doesn't have to be PS2 related at all. Could be anything really. I'm just looking for a good place to start.
My only fond memories of Rogue Galaxy is the factory crafting system. The rest of the game was forgettable.
