Just like with how Demon's Souls started it all for Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro. Xenogears is where it started it all for Xenosaga, and Xenoblade.

(The beginning and the end. The alpha and the omega.)

As my thread title states, if you love Xenogears, then I think it's imperative that you play or watch Xenosaga III. Over the years we've seen some pretty cool nods to Xenogears, like the Final Fantasy Brave Exvius collab:

hqdefault.jpg

...and the Xenogears collab for Figure Heads:

While these are some really cool bits of fan service to Xenogears; at the end of the day, Xenosaga III still has the coolest nods to Xenogears a fan could want.

Unfortunately, getting your hands on a copy of Xenosaga III is becoming more difficult as time goes on so watching it may be the next best thing.

Not to mention, plans to remaster Xenosaga failed, which makes the situation even more dire:
www.siliconera.com

Katsuhiro Harada Says a Xenosaga HD Collection 'Failed in a Profitable Market Analysis'

The odds of getting a Xenosaga HD Collection seem faint, as Katsuhiro Harada took to Twitter to explain why it would be "difficult" to see.

[Anyway, at this point, I'm going to list the fan service to Xenogears that appears in Xenosaga III off the top of my head so I don't recommend continuing past this point if you want to avoid spoilers. If you don't care about spoilers, then by all means continue past this line.]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPOILERS AHEAD

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going off the top of my head, so if I miss or forget to mention anything, please let me know and I'll try to make corrections. There might also be nods to Xenogears that I'm not aware of either in Xenosaga III or outside of it, so please tell me if you know of any! With that said let's begin!

This one is pretty easy! Jin is quite frankly Citan!

At one point in your journey through Xenosaga III, you'll eventually make your way to a place called Dabrye Mine. In this mine, you'll encounter someone named Mai Magus, who has an uncanny resemblance to Maria.

Not only that, but she also uses a modified version of Maria's Gear, Seibzehn. Really cool! I might be getting confused here, but I think the next nod to Xenogears appears in Labryinthos. Inside, you encounter Omega Universitas, which is an obvious reference to Weltall.

This is a new design of Weltall, possibly based around Weltall 2 from Xenogears. This was fantastic fan service.

The question still remains, who is piloting it?...I don't think I ever found out. On to the next fan service!

The next one appears in Abel's Ark if I remember right. As you progress through this confusing stage, you'll find probably one of the coolest nods to Xenogears, but only if you've beaten it as it references the final area of the game.

In the final area of Xenogears, you'll ultimately encounter Deus, who is absorbing power from four surrounding orbs. Whether you decide to crush the orbs first or fight Deus directly, is up to you.

You'll find those same orbs, and core in Abel's Ark. The fan service doesn't end here! Guess who is inside...

Omega Metempsychosis! A nod to Deus!

It also has my favorite boss battle theme, Godsibb! Give it a listen!

I almost forgot about Nephilim and Abel. You might recall "The song of Nephilim". These are two characters that will eventually be revealed to you as you progress through the game. They have a strong resemblance to Fei and Elly.

Now for this next reference. In Xenosaga III, there is a quest line involving a certain scientist. This scientist built a robot which you'll be fighting near the end game. That robot is named Erde Kaiser and it's quite possible that Erde Kaiser is a nod to the G-Elements mech.

At this point, I thought that this was all the Xenogears references in Xenosaga III back when I played it (14 years ago?), but it was not! Later in the game, near end game if you will, there is a super secret optional boss encounter! You'll get a rematch with Omega Universitas but the gloves are off this time around. I believe this is one of the games hardest boss fights too.

Omega Universitas transforms into Omega ID, another obvious nod to Xenogears.

An absolute monster! Well I hope you enjoyed going down memory lane with me. This is all I can remember at this point in time.

Trying to remember events from a game I played 14 years ago is hard! Again, if there is any nods to Xenogears I might have missed, please don't be afraid to share! I'd love to know!

I explore the world of Xenogears in VR! (VRChat - Image Heavy)

In all of its PS1 glory. Never thought I'd see the day where I can enter the world of a legendary classic! A classic that I have played through maybe 3 or 4 times over the years. The world is still a WIP, the creator has quite a lot of work to do but for what's there, it's really cool! I...

Bless you, OP.

Xenosaga III is greatly underrated. It's the best of all the Xeno games, IMO.

XSIII is great, but I still found it worse than gears and the blade games. It doesn't help that you have to go through 2 mediocre games before getting to it as well.

Props for being the only xeno game without shitty mech combat though.

Xenosaga is one of my favorite RPG series of all time and playing Xenogears has been just as great so far. They're very different games in presentation but thematically I see a lot of parallels. They have the same heart IMO.

Personally I think episodes 1 and 2 need to be experienced before jumping into 3. There's too much context missed and emotional setup that is skipped if you only read the summaries.

I played Xenogears and Xenosaga III back to back when XS III originally released and all the XG homage blew my mind at the time.

Yuki Kajiura's take One who Bares Fangs at God was so good too. I would load up a save from that part of the game, sitting there listening to it when I needed to chill for a few.

If any game deserves a remake(and not one that takes 10-15 fucking years start to finish) its xenogears.

It's disappointing that KOS-MOS and T-elos got into XBC2 but they couldn't get Elly and Fei. Zeke is one giant reference to gears though.

I think the only Xenogears reference we got in Xenoblade 2, that I was aware of, was the art style used for Shulk and Fiora.

As for Zeke referencing Xenogears, I didn't know about that...is he referencing Bart? o.o

A small reference to gears in XC2 is also the cutscene where you first see Pyra and it's framed in the same way as Abel seeing Kadomony on the Eldridge

Too bad that Xenosaga remasters will not happen. Would love to replay those games.

You're very welcome! ;)

yea if you can lend me a copy

No can do! It's mine! :)

Though, I'm still really sad that the Xenosaga Remaster failed. I would have really liked to see newcomers play it.

I consider it part of the ''Xeno-collection'' if you know what I mean.

Why would you just watch it? The gameplay is great.

Well, if you have money, you can buy a copy off amazon from $180-300 dollars.

I don't recommend spending that much on a game though, unless you're a collector of sorts.

So at the very least, one could watch a Let's Play or Walkthrough of the game and save that money.

Ah, that reminds me!

Wasn't there a music track in Xenosaga III that sounds similar to the ''One who bares fangs at god"?

Yeah the remaster getting shot down means the originals are going to continue skyrocketing in price

Is there a good video that explains all of the connections between Xenosaga and Xenogears?

I adored the Xenosaga trilogy when I played it. Afraid to ever go back though, for fear it will not have aged well.

It's the shame the remasters fell through. I only played it once soon after release and barely remember anything about it other than a few big story moments. For a while I've considered one day just saying fuck it and splurging on a mint copy with the holographic cover, if I can find one that is.

I updated the OP to include Nephilim and Abel.

Two important characters!

Is there a good video that explains all of the connections between Xenosaga and Xenogears?

That's a good question, I'm sure there are videos trying to connect the games.

If there is one thing they all have in common, it's the Zohar.

Xenosaga III has this really amazing gameplay sequence wherein you obtain Jr's ultimate weapon...

They are fun nods, but I wouldn't call them imperative. The Saga trilogy is nice (especially the third game) but unfortunately doesn't come close to Xenogears for me.

It's really too bad all the issues meant Xenosaga only ever got to like part 2 out of 6 instead of actually half way through. Pied Piper certainly helps to round out the background though. I would have loved to see their plans for part 5 when they got back to where Xenogears would be in the plotline. The series is definitely one of my favorites on PS2.

I really wish Monolith would go back to this style of game. I don't know if I really need a Xenoblade again.

I still really need to play Xenosaga 3 someday. 2 turned me off of the series so hard that I couldn't bring myself to play the next one, even knowing it's supposed to be far better.

I have been considering this but always felt the need to play Xenosaga 1 & 2 first. I wish there was at least a fan translation of the DS version for the first two so I could work through those before playing 3.

I'm sure you could watch the cutscenes on YouTube for the first two games, I remember enjoying the first game and not enjoying the second one's combat. There are a lot of highs in the third game and a lot of craziness. I think the fact these games exist at all to give me some hope. Sure there is a lot of anime nonsense in there but there's also a lot of real good. And you see some serious character development from characters across the games.

I'm good on playing Xenosaga 3, no thanks. But yeah, I did know about the Xenogears references and that's pretty dope.

I wish they had the ability to reference it in Xenoblade, so we could have gotten Fei and Elly in XC2 when they brought in characters from the rest of the Xenoverse.

Xenosaga Episode III was the best of the XS trilogy, yet still inferior to Xenogears. The nods to the latter were generally amusing, though I personally prefer Xenoblade doing its own thing rather than clinging desperately to the legacy of a game to which it had no official connection.

Man, the saga series is my favorite gaming series ever. It was such a shame when they said no remaster. I hope atleast in the future they port it, so i can have digital copies.

The DS game isn't part of the actual trilogy. Its events reflect those of the anime series and don't correctly link up to XS3 or Pied Piper.

Xenosaga's legacy preservation status occupies that small, sad region where remastering isn't even a fan fever dream; it was actually addressed by a producer but the idea did not pick up traction and now it's a direct no. Given the ongoing success of Xenoblade, it's a tragic state of affairs.

Xenogears is probably my second favorite JRPG of all time behind FF7, but I thought Xenosaga was mostly terrible. Episode 1 was a decent set up but Ep. 3, and especially 2, completely fumble everything. Whole thing felt silly compared to Xenogears imo.
