Fallout 4 doesn't really do anything well, so I'd have to disagree

They are really two different beast to my eyes the New Vegas comparison never made sense, overall I do prefer TOW but to be fair I am also largely more in favor of a more linear game designs

Completely agree. Dropped TOW not long after I left Edgewater and fixed the heating problem in space.

Even the thing it's supposed to be good at - the RPG elements are so shallow. Just plug points into speech skill and you'll pass every check 100% of the time. The perks are boring and don't interact with the game systems in a fun way. The Supernova difficulty is fucking awful.

I don't hate to say it: I enjoyed Fallout 4 exponentially more than ToW. I played the former for 150hrs and the latter for about 10 before uninstalling.

As bad as some of FO4's dialogue/writing is, at least it was entertaining. ToW's was a borefest outside of companions. Add to that the poor exploration of ToW, terrible FPS gameplay, and awful character upgrades (all of which were great in FO4) and it's not even close for me.

All I can say is that I totally disagree. Fallout 4 fails in narrative, world building, AND gameplay.

I definitely had a better time with Fallout 4. It has a lot of low points but some high points as well. TOW just felt very evenly average? Totally inoffensive, but I didn't want to see it through because the game didn't seem to be offering any fresh or exciting ideas, just the same old stuff repackaged but not as good.

The only entertaining thing about the dialogue in Fallout 4 is how laughably bad it is at times. Just borderline incoherent character motivations and unintentionally stupid decisions.

Dialogue in 4 is just atrocious tho.
I had to install the mod that at least features the entire spoken dialogue day 1 or would have struggled with it.
It was really embarrassing on their end.

Exactly. I'd rather be laughing than bored —unintentionally or not. (I adore David Cage games for that reason)

I also found FO4 significantly more enjoyable. For me, Outer Worlds just isn't fun to play. It's mediocre as a shooter, the RPG mechanics and choices are shockingly shallow given the hype, smaller environments kill the sense of exploration, and the tone of the game and narrative didn't click for me. At least Fallout had some good exploration and VATS to make up for weak gunplay. Narrative and writing were poor though for sure.

Installing that mod is necessary, but christ, seeing it all written out like that just makes the writing look even worse

That is exactly what obsidian was trying to make tho. This game may as well have a tattoo on its forehead that says "THIS IS A FALLOUT GAME" with how much it tries to get the point of it being a New Vegas spiritual successor across to the player.

It's like they sat down and looked at what people liked about New Vegas, what they felt was missing from recent Fallout titles, and simply didn't do a good job of executing that.

I disagree. Even if they have a ton of similar elements and are obviously going for the Fallout audience and trying to be the new Fallout in their marketing, the thing is is that they're trying to make a game like Fallout 1,2 or New Vegas, which to me is inherently a different type of game than Fallout 3/4/Skyrim, with different priorities.

Vehemently disagree on all fronts. The Outer Worlds has much more going on than Fallout 4 ever did. It's just more fun to play and explore.

I'm trying to choose a response option

1. I don't agree with this thread.
2. I don't agree with this thread.
3. This thread is something yours truly doesn't agree with.
4. I didn't agree with this thread earlier.

The vast majority of the writing in 4 isn't "haha" bad though. It's more "what the hell was Bethesda thinking" bad.

I found Fallout 4 to be very disappointing and I love Obsidian, but I gotta agree with the OP. I probably had about the same amount of enjoyment across the two games, which was not a whole lot.

Though I am excited to see what a more fleshed out, larger budget Outer Worlds follow-up would look likem

Hot take. I hate all of those types of games.

Fallout 4, 3, Skyrim, the Outer worlds, witcher 3? Etc

All open world busy work.

......

I guess I'm in the wrong thread huh?

Angola / Zaire border region.
TOW is Era's newest "This really well received game is actually bad" game, isn't it? Might be record time, it took BOTW a year for those threads
Record time? RDR2 had megathreads shitting on it within hours of launch.
Not that there is anything wrong with that, a game getting good reviews doesn't mean it will be universally beloved by the community.

Yes it is.

The weapon durability and lack of conventional zelda dungeons are two very obvious points of contention.

Lets not derail the discussion though.
That doesn't make it "a very controversial game" that means that there is a vocal minority that doesn't like it. "Really controversial", lol, talk about being in the bubble. Not even the Era bubble, because even on Era it's probably like, one of the top two most loved games. Just a... self selecting echo chamber?

it's Fallout at the molecular level in every aspect. I don't understand how one can miss that. It's so blatant.

I've never seen anyone on Era jump to the defense of BOTW anytime anyone has a negative opinion about it as quickly as you do.

There isn't a cycle. Some people simply don't love the game.

Wasn't much cycle about this one to be honest. Just looking to the OT there was an obvious trend of certain people liking the game less after about 10 hour mark. It becomes apparent that there isn't a whole lot more to the game than what you see at the beginning.

If you asked me during the first 10 hours I'd say no way, but after finish TOW, yeah Fallout 4 is better. TOW was pretty good though.

Agreed. Fallout 4, with all its flaws, at least was a vast and interesting world with things to discover.

The lack of actually discovering anything is what killed TOW for me. It's a pretty, shiny game, sure. But...

1. The world is devoid of actual exploration. It's nothing more than small environments with little to actually interact with or discover. The promise of Fallout in space...yeah, not so much.
2. The companions are fun, but their "quests" and perks" are so completely underwhelming. Eventually, I stopped even picking perks for them because they were so useless. Parvati, such a cool character, too, but they totally blew it on her "quest," and I use that term in the absolutely loosest sense.
3. Boring weapons, boring perks. Combat felt like a chore and never exciting.
4. Being good or bad never resulted in anything. True, Fallout 4 suffered from the same issue.

Fallout 4 is better at being a bad shooter than The Outer Worlds, if that's what you mean.

Neither game is good when separated from their role playing and story aspects, but Fallout 4 is bad at nearly everything it does (exploring to get what, another five desk fans and ten coffee mugs? That's not incentive to explore if your crafting system stinks).

Meanwhile, The Outer Worlds is bad as a shooter and has bland exploration, but rewards you with meaningful choices, good character writing (even if companion quests are undercooked), and an enjoyable story full of witty dialogue.

Having spent a whole week playing the outer worlds, was great first day or so, but in the end after I finished it, loaded up all fallout 4 again and well just carried on the discovery of small little places and scenes I hadn't found and rebuilt my base.

I'm disappointed in Outer Worlds as well for many of the reasons you listed, but in no way could I agree there.
