Alternatively, try Aviary Attorney.

Unlike DR, this one is actually good.

It's quality of its writing and the charm of its characters is a lot closer to Ace Attorney with the only issue being the cases are much easier.

It seems like AI : The somnium files is closer to what you're looking for. It has a demo on some platforms (PS4, switch have a demo, none yet on pc as far as I can tell).

Ehhh, I wouldn't say so. The puzzles are pretty much completely illogical, and just require you try everything until something works. Reminds me of when Ace Attorney wants an extremely specific piece of evidence and you're already multiple steps ahead. It also gets *stupidly* anime with the porno mag stuff. Completely took me out of it.

Ace Attorney is great. Danganronpa isnt very good, it tries too hard to be Ace Attorney.

OP will NOT like Somnium Files based on the post about his aversion to anime and manga.

Also don't play Somnium Files, it's bad.

You should try Danganronpa.

I love Ace Attorney and greatly dislike Danganronpa.
This is me

AA is one of my favorite series ever, but I really didn't like Danganronpa

They are very different games, OP

I love AA because of the writting, art, and overral aesthetics. The tone and everything else just feels cozy.

Danganronpa on the other hand, is a lot more anime, surreal, and ... edgy?
Didnt like the tone, the art, the characters ...

I'm really not a fan, but the games are cheap, so maybe go for it

Oh also, OP

PLAY GHOST TRICK

AHHHH

And this!

I'm going to sleep right now at 5 am because I wasnt able to stop playing Ghost Trick

Amazing game

Short answer, yes. Long answer:

Ace Attorney got me back into gaming all the way in 2009. A very low point in my life but I derived a great source of comfort from adventure/puzzle games making a return through a bizarre Japanese lawyer simulator.

However, 2009 is a long time ago and the Ace Attorney formula is getting quite flat. I thought Dual Destinies was an absolute slough to get through - at least with respect to the investigations and the unending dialogue. The problem is that we lowly Westerners aren't getting the Ace Attorney games by the original game's director. We're getting the B-team while Japan enjoys fascinating adventures where Ace Attorney hangs out with Sherlock Holmes.

Enter Danganronpa.

I bought a Vita just to play Danganronpa and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed it even more than that 999 business and Ghost Trick (edit: I'll just interject here and say Ghost Trick is one of the best games ever made - my enjoyment of Danganronpa is a personal preference but through an objective lens Ghost Tricks has all these other titles beat). Danganronpa was a breath of fresh air next to Ace Attorney. It felt contemporary with a younger and sexier cast, a cooler soundtrack and copious amounts of teen angst for some straight to the point melodrama. If you enjoyed the film Battle Royale, you will be right at home with this sufficiently self-aware iteration of teenagers in a trapped scenario. If not, the game might be cringe.

The only constraint you will need to be aware of is that there are far more arcade-y minigames in Danganronpa that require quick thinking and rapid reflexes. None the less, the experience of all three games is worth it.

ZzzzzzZzzzZzz...
Dangaronpa tries really hard to do the Ace Attorney formula on crack with its real-time interactive bits and some minigames. The detective phases are for all intents and purposes exactly the same. Mind fuckery is dramatically ramped up vs AA, and you slowly work the overarching story and large cast while working through the main story. I actually played the games in reverse so I can see AA's influence a lot better now. I didn't find one to be any more or less difficult than the other... needing to brute force things at times but whatever.
Yeah, maybe? The recent AI: The Somnium Files is actually more Ace Attorney-ish imo
Yeah, I really enjoyed that game and would highly recom--
OP will NOT like Somnium Files based on the post about his aversion to anime and manga.
nvm

I will say this could kick in with Dangaronpa but it's nowhere near as extreme as AI in the anime-ness. Dangaronpa's anime-ness is largely just an art skin where AI is full-blown anime tropey idiocy and it really ruined things in a few key spots. Fantastic story, though!

I love both series but they are very different things.

I know OP has already said they'll skip Danganronpa, but maybe give the demo of V3 a try before writing it off. I believe it's available on Steam and PSN.

As someone already mentioned, give Ghost Trick a shot if you haven't already OP. It's from the creator of AA and is arguably a better game than any single AA.

I love the og Ace Attorney series and i recently beat the first Danganrompa game.
I thought the cases themselves were kinda of enjoyable (even thought the trials are filled with annoying, pointless, dumb minigames) but the overall plot was so freaking idiotic and terribly written that it completely turned me off from wanting to check out the other games.

If you want to play an absolutely fantastic visual novel, play 999.

Play the DS version and only the DS version.

Do not play any of the console or PC remakes. No matter what anyone tells you.

I loved Ace Attorney and did not like Danganronpa at all. I went back to first Ace Attorney with the re-release on PS4 and I noticed that AA is better written, does not waste your time as much with repeating things over and over and does not treat you like an idiot. The things that you do are also more interesting. Also the characters are really bad in Danganronpa (of course in my opinion). Though I think I did not enjoy any VN type games apart from AA so maybe I'm just not an audience to what they are trying to do.

Mmm, I wouldn't say like Ace Attorney automatically makes you likely to enjoy Danganronpa, it's more a case of AA being the gateway into VNs with Danganronpa being the next step on the road alongside 999. Basically to enjoy Danganronpa you're going to need to like mysteries, at least tolerate anime and wacky plots, and be the sort of person that gets invested into characters, but doesn't get put off by some mediocre minigames every now and then.

Personally, while the Steam sale is on I'd give the first one a shot (just keep an eye on the clock so you can refund) and see if it grabs you. If it doesn't then try out 999 on the DS, that is a lot more of a straight VN but generally a lot easier to get into because it isn't as up front about the anime. And yes, it should be the DS version, not any of the other non-dual screen equipped ports. I know that may seem silly but trust me, there is a really strong reason why that nobody can talk about.
