I've had brief, sharp chest pains that have occurred once a day for a few days now. I went to an Urgent Care center and they told me to go to an ER. I've been here for 9 hours now. I'm waiting to be checked out and got a bill for almost $2000. They found nothing wrong.

So now I'm taking a huge financial hit, and will probably still suffer. Can't afford to do any follow ups so hopefully I just get better on my own.

This always happens to me. Shit sucks.

Our healthcare system is a goddamn joke and it's embarrassing that we've allowed it to go on like this for this long

Yup. My daughter has an ear infection right now and all I can think about is how much it sucks that I'm going to have to pay over $100 just to get an appointment to get a prescription for antibiotics.

It's the worse I've experienced so far. I've been to "third world" countries with much much better healthcare.

Sorry for complaining. I'm just tired and hungry and want to go home.

It's funny that my systolic was constantly at 40, and they just shrugged and ignored. Multiple people came multiple times to turn off the red warning beeps on the machine.

Or am I thinking heart rate, which has nothing to do with either. Maybe that one.

Right. Heart rate. Not sure why I said systolic, which is blood pressure.

That's common for the machines to beep. The nurses and doctors likely know more about them than you seeing as you don't know these numbers.

Welcome to capitalism.

Honestly, I think I've become a bit of a hypochondriac- I'm scared to go to the hospital, because of the medical costs and I pay for insurance. I notice all these little things and I don't know if it's normal or not.

Sorry. It was a minor point and not really a main concern. Was just funny to me.

Finally free so I'm going to go home, shove food in my face, and hit the bed.

a drunk driver broke both of my legs and right hip and fractured my skull. I owe $30,000+ he didn't have insurance and Gei-fuck (my insurance) doesn't cover it either. They are only covering the damage he did to my bike.

And thats it? You didnt take legal measures?
lol no. He fled the scene. Cops found him the next day, at that point it was a possible homicide as i was in a coma and it wasn't looking good. He lied and said he wasn't driving, they couldn't at the time prove he was. So 5 months went by, they were investigating, triangulating cell towers, interviewing witnesses, getting CCTV footage, and I was doing physical therapy, first in hospital, then at home, then at rehab. In maybe..... March? 2018 he was arrested for fleeing the scene of an accident causing bodily harm and lying to police. They proved with DNA, witness' cell phone data and CCTV that he had driven from a bar in Tampa and ran me over. He pled not guilty at first so the trial process took months with many pre trial hearings. In January 2019 he admitted defeat and plead guilty. Sentenced to 7 years in prison and gave me $5000 plus other restitution when he is released. But for right now, for 7 years those are my bills, in my name.

UK: £0

Japan: 5000円 for what you have if you got standard company insurance (That's cheaper that Super Smash Bros.)

I personally find Japanese healthcare to be super expensive going from 0 to that but all my American coworkers feel the complete opposite and praise it highly. Rightfully so but it's interesting how the US and UK view the cost of healthcare here totally differently.

If I ever end up leaving this country, this will be a big reason why. American Healthcare is a fucking joke. But people keep voting for Republicans because "socialism".

I'm sorry to hear that, OP.

I actually had the same exact situation a few months back. Experienced chest pains somewhat continuously, then on a whim went to a hospital nearby at 11pm for a checkup. They found nothing wrong. (X-Ray, etc)

My bill was about $30 because I live in Japan.

If I was born in the States I would have died a very long time ago as a baby that never grew, and several times after that as well. I'm so grateful I was born in Ireland.

It's an utterly ridiculous and barbaric system that I can't believe anyone supports. Waiting times? What? The worst they got was back in the '80s when we would have to wait up to three hours to see the consultants up at the hospital. These days a twenty minute wait is more likely (and these are for my yearly check-ups at the hospital). And who cares how long you have to wait when the care - which is always excellent - is free?

People who defend the American system are beyond my level of understanding. In Ireland, many workplaces provide for private healthcare, or you can pay for it yourself if you can. For everyone else, the free healthcare is there to help you if you need it. It's not perfect, Ireland's HSE is forever in need of beds for example, but the level of care is exactly the same and you lose nothing except maybe a private room by using it. And even then I was granted a private room without asking when I became very ill as a teenager (even though I was almost better when they moved me in there).

People having to pay thousands for the tiniest bit of healthcare and hundreds more for the medication is a gross situation.

Damn at that story.
As a teenager, leaving germany to live in the USA was something a lot of people wanted to do later in their life. Now, nobody would get me there (not only because of healtcare but other things too).

Sounds terrible. $2000 god damn.

Disliked the Japanese system but at least it was free enough. Canadian system was good and haven't had the misfortune of using the Germany system yet (aka I haven't been sick or anything that required me using it yet. knock on wood)

What healthcare? Surely you don't mean this system of financial ruin where individuals are wrung out for every damn cent for the basic right to survive, and saving one's own life risks putting them and their family into bankruptcy? Because that sure doesn't sound like fucking healthcare to me.

Rather than talk about the American system, I'll just summarise the Australian system.

If you have something urgent (like my mother had cancer) or a broken leg or something like that, you get in pretty much right away and it would be almost free or low cost. For other elective surgery you get put on a waiting list which can take some time, or you can take out private health insurance and go to private health care to get it done straight away.

Either way, the system is pretty good, I won't say perfect, but it doesn't screw over someone financially.

I'm actually living overseas now, and always get a bit nervous in case something happens because I have to pay full fee for everything here.

As it turns out, the "advantages" of the US healthcares system are almost entirely bullshit propaganda made to try and discourage people from changing the system for the better.
