I also didn't say anything about that being an excuse. That's the way YOU read it. I was making a comment about his two incredibly opposite sides. If you hear him talk about old blues men there is nothing but respect. That amount of cognitive dissonance is pure insanity . The heroin must destroy your id completely to be able to justify that to yourself. Doesn't make him anything less of a racist.

I'm sorry, but given the context of the thread this was your initial take:

He played black music, Hendrix was a big friend of his, he dated poc.
Heroin makes you a fucking asshole.

The information you conveyed: He played black music. Friends with a famous black musician. Has sex with black women. Drugs make you an asshole.

The problem I took with your post is that is has absolutely NONE of the context you're applying to it now. So at best it was just poorly worded. That's the best I can really give you on it, lol. At worst it reads like you're ignoring the racism. Because to be blunt: You did, lol. In a thread about Claptons racism you simply pointed out that he played black music, had a black friend and had sex w/ black women. Then said drugs did it and left it at that.

Just to be clear: I'm not talking about what you meant or felt. I'm talking about what your words actually were.

"Fucking Jamaicans don't belong here"

Strong words from a guy whose most famous song is a Bob Marley cover.

Had no idea. Heard some friends make an offhand comment once that he was a shit but didn't know the context.

It's always funny to see a new generation learn about the shittiness of Clapton in real time. His music fucking sucks too.

Didn't David Bowie also say wild ass shit while doped up? Like he supported facism and Hitler?
Well, Bowie was a bit of a weird one. Yes, he said that and yes he was probably very high on drugs when he did, but it's vague whether he said it as David Bowie.

Bowie had these musical characters and at the time he had the Thin White Duke, who was in his songs also not entirely against fascism and kind of a shithead. So Bowie saying that was probably his roleplay, taken to a way too extreme level due to the drugs and the aura of invincibility that I would guess comes with being one of the most famous stars on the planet.

Rock music was only ever good in the late 70s to early 80s.

Cobain seemed legit as fuck tho

How did I never know about this, holy shit.

I only like(d) one Clapton song, but fuck me that's a fucked up ass world view.

Don't get me wrong, it is a reallyfucked up quote and it was needed and good that he was called out on it, but I do think that Bowie's roleplay as his characters back in the 70's does make it significantly different than what people like Clapton said. Of course, in the end it's all a matter of opinion whether or not Bowie was true to himself when he said that or was playing up a role enhanced by drugs and other stuff since he was a bit of an enigma when it came to his political views.

I mean, this is the dude who created an entire album for his friend's wife so she would leave him for him. That friend happened to be George Harrison. He'd fuck over a Beatle—what makes you think he would care about us?

I know who he is but never liked his music tbh, just never clicked with me.

But good to know he's a trash person. Gives me extra satisfaction knowing that Hendrix dunked on him in front of everyone and made Claptop look like a clown, to the point of Clapton running backstage and physically shaking.

Stopped bending the rules for your personal heroes. Bowie was an asshole and a sex offender.

I love their music, bu I hate Eric Clapton and Mike Love as people. They're as shitty as they can be.

I can understand supporting some conservative ideas but you have to a special kind of asshole to be anti-immigration. How can you be against something that doesn't concern you at all? Right to relocate is one of the most basic human rights, you basically are against a human right.

Never disputed that, he probably was an asshole, a lot of famous musicians were/are. I generally don't do heroes because you can only be disappointed by them. I'm just saying I'm not quite sure if that quote one time is enough to paint him as also a borderline neo-Nazi. But yeah, I'll stop.

I didn't know Eric Capton is British or that he is a terrible human being.
Double shock.

He called hitler a rockstar, not sure how much more he can say. He also had sex with a 13 year old and her 14 year old friend. Sex creep, racist, asshole. Fuck him. Not sure why he gets a pass.

I was today years old when I found out about it.

I had zero investment in him or his music, but, bye bitch.

I used to give him a pass after what happened to his son.

but you have to learn to deal with the anger and the hatred and he really hasn't.

I mean he wrote Layla to convince a woman to cheat on her husband with him. We have always known he had a long piece of shit streak in him.

that's why I voted for "I didn't know it was this bad". Because I knew he was one, just assumed that it continued because of anger over what happened

I only learned this today too. But I guess I'm just glad I wasn't a big fan or anything. I only know him for his three songs I know. Layla, Tears in Heaven and Layla.

For some reason I was mixing up Eric Clapton and Robert plant and was quite sad. But now I am more sad about van Morrison.

He said some stupid things nearly fifty years ago. His life has been filled with relationships with people of color. I've literally never heard one story of him mistreating anyone, at least not because of their ethnicity. The lockdown stuff is dumb but not a fringe sentiment.

He was praising Enoch Powell in the mid 2000s!

The "Rivers of Blood" Speech is super racist, and wasn't given in reaction to some immigration legislation or anything, but instead The Race Relations Act of 1968, banning racial discrimination in housing and employment.

Roger Waters has been a vocal socialist throughout his life and his lyrics have always challenged fascism, not sure what you're talking about.

(Though unfortunately he did collaborate with Eric Clapton in the 80s)
Eh, most famous musicians who are probably innocent teamed up with Clapton. He's one of the biggest guitarists, it'd be hard to avoid. Not excusing what he said, though.
Roger Waters is a bit of a dick but he isn't horrible in his views. Just a bit of a dick.

This is the part that's crazy to me. He was super tight with guys like Hendrix and B.B. King. Had a black girlfriend. Spent his whole formative years playing with black musicians.

How the fuck can you mesh these two things in your brain?

Not to be a dick but have you never had a white friend?

Having relationships with black people while being racist against black people is hardly some unknown mind boggling phenomena, it's super common basic racist shit
