It was decent, maybe 7/10 on the story for me - I was interested in the world and exploration aspect but other than that i thought it was pretty overhyped

also

a lot of WEIRD fan service type things but with full on children. Like put the creator on a list type things.

I don't know why too many animes do such sketchy shit

Yup, the last discussion thread on it got locked due to its sexualization of children and a handful of posters defending it just because the series is otherwise interesting and the anime has particularly high production value.

It personally skeeved me out bigtime, and IIRC the creator seems to lean into it on social media.

If you're looking for something else to watch during the quarantine, Land of the Lustrous is great and was adapted into anime around the same time as Made in Abyss. It's free if you have Amazon Prime.

I dropped the Manga due to the creepy sexualization. It was interesting, but not putting-up-with-torturing-naked-children-interesting.

We've started watching Carole & Tuesday.

Lot less naked children, so I think I made the better choice.

Why must they always do this to kids.

I'm in it for the long run because I want to know what's at the bottom.

But knowing my luck, I'm never going to find out because it'll never last long enough to get there.

I enjoyed the adventure bits and the music, but I can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone because of exactly the issue(s) you mentioned. I understand it only gets worse in the manga.

If you want a dungeon crawling story that's less problematic, Delicious in Dungeon is available on Kindle / Comixology, and it's pretty great.

The fanservice and the gross episode later just killed it for me. I don't mind darker concepts in my anime but this skirts the line way too hard of torture porn and other crap.

I think i got kind of spoiled on land of the lustrous in a thread that came up earlier in the week

about what protagonist gets hit the hardest

It's not an anime, but if you want a manga that doesn't sexualize children and has a unique world to explore, and is fully colored, check out East Into The Night on Manga Plus. It's only 9 chapters long currently, but you can read the full series legally for free on their site/app.

It's a super interesting concept, but the sexualization is indefensible, and while I was able to ignore some of the grosser moments, I've heard it gets worse.

It's a fantastic series with absolutely valid reasons for critique for its problematic side. It's one of those works that makes you wish even more for whether it's shitty pandering to the worst people, or just plain problematic views of the creator , to finally get ridden of from this medium. Sadly, it doesn't look like this is anywhere close to happening.

TOO many animes do this. TOO MANY!

WHY?!
I would say that it's leaning into a Stephen King vibe of something that's about children but highly disturbing and meant for adults, like It, SIlver Bullet/Cycle of the Werewolf, etc.

It helps that the anime of Made in Abyss isn't as creepy about the child and child-like characters as the manga and the creator's other works.

I read the first chapter of the manga which in and of itself has the lead prepubescent girl character strung up nude not once but twice! It had some interesting setup and I've heard the anime is "better" but like the foundation is really rotted in this one.

I'll probably read synopsises and wiki pages about it since the setting intrigues me but yeah, the treatment of little kids is too much to swallow.

Or more like the Stephen King vibe of that one scene at the end of "IT". I would say a more likely explanation is that they're appealing to the pedophile market. Disgusting and it deserves no defense.

I wasn't trying to defend it too much, just referring to other extremely dark works that focus on child characters. Bokurano, Hunter x Hunter, or The Promised Neverland could be other examples in the anime/manga space.

I said that the anime isn't as creepy (it still is creepy) but I still dropped Made in Abyss some time ago because the author skeeves me out too much. Bit of a bummer because I really liked the tone and worldbuilding but we all draw the line somewhere.

The show had a great premise. I loved the idea of exploring this mysterious pit, with crazy environments, creatures, and artifacts. The worldbuilding was great, and I really dug most of what I watched, but the fan-service with the prepubescent looking characters was fucking creepy. It left a really sour taste in my mouth. It's not a show I feel I can reccomend because of it. I heard the manga was even worse about this too.

We should consider making "....but don't bother trying to discuss it here!!!!" bannable. It's always just handwaving pedophilia.

I could understand that if it was just the kids getting into stressful, dangerous situations but I feel like everyone is specifically calling out the out of place nudity and sexual jokes with the kids. Like, it can't even be given even the tiniest benefit of the doubt because at least in the anime, they loudly lampshade it in a "oh, she needs to be naked because reasons".

It's an immensely creepy show. Try going after it in any community, not just here, and it will bring out people willing to go to bat for pedo shit. I know this from experience.

Yeah those aspects of the anime are pared back somewhat compared to the much creepier manga but are still present and are not excusable. The Stephen King comparison was overly charitable and directed at the parts of it I found less objectionable.

Never seen the show or read the manga, but I have seen the two movies for it. It's interesting, but I'm already dreading what sort of punishment will befall the two leads as they descend even deeper

It'd be so good without the weird creepy parts.
Part of the torture porn parts cross the line but.. I wanna know all the world building and random stuff down there.

If this is a show that fetishizes the abuse and sexualization of children, why is it even allowed here?

I... Did I forget all the sexualization in this? I liked the art and the general concept. I remember the story generally. I guess I just tuned out all the bs from my memory. Fuck.

It's present and extreme right from the start of the anime and the manga. I assume it drops off for a while after the shit in the opening, but it was enough to stop me watching or reading a series I'm pretty sure I'd fucking love otherwise.

this is literally the reactions my friends who recommended it to us had

im the kind of person who gets annoyed when i see "regular" fanservice with of-age characters so when i saw this it was like major wtf. Probably wouldnt have continued if i wasnt watching it with a few other people

The show had great music and environmental art, I'll give it that. The sexualization though will likely keep me from watching the rest, I read part of the manga to see what happens after the anime and it unsurprisingly gets a lot worse.

You say this as if it's a bad thing that people are bothered and shit on pedo bait anime and don't let that horrible shit get a pass like too many anime dweebs do.
Well no, I'm saying that because every single thread ever made about it gets locked down, with the exact same comments every time. So what's the point?

I will say this in every thread: there is no fan service in the anime. Nudity does not equate fan service or sexualization. Framing and context matters.

The manga is a different story.

So if it was about the two kids and there were just moments where they explore their puberty in pretty natural ways then that's one thing.

But why is their society's punishment hanging kids up naked?
