That doesn't happen much to the ones I go to. You don't finish, you pay more. Signs are everywhere. 10+ years back I do remember entitled teenage kids at a buffet getting plate after plate after plate without eating anything. If I were the parents I would beat the living crap out of them.

I go to buffets every now and then and I have never seen this happen. People seem more than willing to get up for a second serving.

Woah, do they really leave the hot/prepared food open like that for you to scoop what you want or do you usually need to ask the staff to pour that kind of food? I have just been to the breakfast ones where you're basically picking up the croissants and madeleines you plan to be eating with your bare hands.

Pre-Covid was serve yourself. It's probably back to that again by now.

My dad had two buffet rules:
"Take what you want; eat what you take."
I still live by that today.

I've not seen that wastage at a restaurant, but have seen it on cruise ships. Took my kids on a Disney cruise, and saw it more than once. I saw plates piled high with sausage and bacon, enough for a large family, but that was the scraps leftover... the table was empty and the family gone. Enough food for 1+ families entire breakfast, even by cruise ship standards, and just wasted. It was offensive, to say the least.

A lot of people just have bigger eyes than stomachs.. No reason to be so dramatic over it. Even when I'm trying to be reasonable with what I take, sometimes I overdo it. I've only ever had one issue at a buffet, and that was when some 10-12 year old kid was somehow pushing shrimp into all of the surrounding foods as he was putting it on his plate. He was way too old to be doing that.

I thought this was going to be about people becoming complete animals at buffets when anything even moderately fancy shows up. I once saw a fist fight break out in front of the crab leg section of a buffet.

I hate the whole buffet experience, and on top of it all, the food usually isn't all that great. So what if I can eat all I want, doesn't make the food good.

I think the last time I was at a buffet was in Vegas a few years back and it was a pretty expensive one, so people were pretty well behaved and the food was good. I hate to sound snobbish but when buffets aim to be cheap and accessible is when it tends to be a bad experience.

Worst part of buffets is that one guy sitting alone judging everyone. Every so often they type something into their phone and smile self-satisfied and then resume eating and judging. Also grapefruit.

I have to force myself to not do this as I have eyes bigger than my belly as my grandma used to say.

It also allows the more interesting way to eat as you can explore different combinations and in-effect create your own multi course meal.

I'm all for limiting what you put on your plate to mitigate waste, though admittedly I've gotten something from a buffet that looked good but ended up ruining my appetite. It sucks, especially if you go to one of the more expensive ones.

Buffets. Those places are total death traps. Death by disease! All those people breathin down the food . Touchin the utensils with their unkept hands, that no doubt probs accidentally brushes up against the food, getting their dead skin cells, little hairs and booger particles into the food.
And then you put it on a plate….and eat it! Disgusting. I can't believe I liked those places as a child. I'd rather eat cat litter off the floor. At least cats know how to be clean.

I thought I won't see a more dramatic post than OPs. Gg, u proved me wrong 😂

I like the IDEA of a buffet (near endless variety, all you can eat), but the reality of a buffet* is always disappointing... food's never as good/fresh as it would be were it a normal restaurant, even when you're full, you're just not very satisfied, unsure of what it is you actually ate. And we don't need "all you can eat"; such an american glutton thing.
Always better off just going to a decent chef-centered restaurant and eating there - usually for the same price as a buffet.

*BTW, and I'm talking about good buffets, at nice restaurants, not trash like Golden Corral.
Caveat... Souplantation had it's place, and I was okay with that - because it didn't pretend to be anything more than it was. Too bad covid killed it. Still, hadn't been there in ages.
The only AYCE I go to these days is Korean BBQ.

My stepdad only wanted one plate so he was a stacker. Dude would have like five pieces of fried chicken on top of the potatoes and Mac and cheese and coke slaw.

Only go to high-end Vegas buffets, then you'll never be mad!

I feel like people make sure they get their money's worth at those so they don't waste too much.

Plus, the quality is usually great.

All buffets should just do the thing where you pay double if you don't finish your plate.

There is an all you can eat place that does this in my city. If you don't clear your plate, there is a surcharge for the amount you did not eat. They tell you when you sit down and I think it's fair.

I saw one. Those are bad at weddings that allow kids too. At a buffet I know not to go near it. Even the adults didn't know how to act when it comes cheese or chocolate fountains at buffets.

There was an all you can eat sushi place that I used to go to that would charge you for each piece if you ordered more than you could eat, but it always seemed lightly enforced.

Buffets aren't exactly known for top quality, I could see a situation where you fill your plate up and if one or two things aren't good you're gonna leave them behind. I don't know that its reasonable to expect everyone to clean off their entire plate at a buffet.

I often do buffets and sadly waste food, sadly I've been living with an abusive parent for a year (Who pays jack shit) and whilst running a food group I kinda have no appetite and am having to fake being okay.

Ya. I mean there's people that are really egregious with it, but I'm not going to fault anyone cause they couldn't eat the dried out meat that tastes like leather.

The food at buffet is already a huge waste anyways, whether people take it or not. It's either going to be cycled out cause it sat too long under heat lamps or tossed end of night.

I go to buffets all the time, but I usually don't pile my plate to overflowing. All that accomplishes is food getting cold before you get to it. There's no reason for it when there's nothing stopping you from just getting another plate. Most of the time if I'm leaving much food on my plate, it's because it was something portioned out by staff and they gave me too much. Usually it's pasta, but sometimes it's being given too big a slice of meat.

Also I'm talking casino buffets. Fuck Golden Corrals and Old Country Buffets. Chinese buffets aren't ideal either, but I still go to them occasionally.

I was at a chinese buffet once. I'll never forget it. This guy walks over to the tray full of crab legs that they just brought out of the kitchen, grabs the steaming hot tray with his bare hands, and takes the whole fucking tray to his table with a big smile on his face. A minute later a waiter had to tell him he couldn't do that and took the tray back but damn....who the fuck does that?

Yeah there's also this. Probably half if not more of the food at a buffet is probably going to be thrown out anyway. Its inherent to the business model. Seems strange to support it and frequent buffets but become indignant at people being wasteful.

Currently imagining OP making a thread about a breakfast buffet on their phone while with (or without, dont know their life) other company and talking about how people are grabbing food while everyone is just eating and minding their business and enjoying themselves

Just bring your fork and sample the foods on the buffet before you load up your plate, then there won't be any bad surprises, and you won't have to feel guilty about leaving food on the plate.

I have like zero desire to ever go to a buffet again. So many gross people out there who just put their hands on food and stick it back, let their kids go touch everything, etc. No thanks.

Man the last time I went to a buffet was at a Brazilian steakhouse and I felt that was a waste because I couldn't physically eat enough to make the $70 worth it.
So many fucking idiots or assholes that just dump shitloads of food on their plates so they don't have to get up again. Then they realize that they can't finish it and just leave it for the staff to throw it away.

Buffets truly show the worst of humanity and this seems to apply to all cultures and religions equally.

I fucking hate everybody at buffets!
We created technology and civilization but that doesn't erase the fact that we're still mere animals.

I see no difference in behavior between people noticing a freshly refilled buffet and a colony of stray cats who just saw the human that's been feeding them.

I did this at my first buffet ever (I was 11) and barely scratched the surface of what I took, but every buffet since then (haven't been to many tbh as I don't trust the format) I've only taken a small amount and gone back for 2nds, 3rds etc. It was a good learning experiece the first time I wasted all that food as I felt really sad and embarrassed.

I think the rule of making customers pay for wasted food is a good one especially if meat is involved.

One time I got a waffle and somehow dolloped horseradish onto it instead of whipped cream, so yeah I didn't eat it
