I've been loving it, but I also feel like eventually we're going to go back to eye melting graphics at 30fps for titles that really push these consoles. I hope we can at least get performance modes that cuts back on some stuff to hit a target 60fps because it's hard to go back to 30.

With AMD pushing a DLSS-like solution, would that help with achieving high frame rates with less drawbacks?

I'm expecting it to last all gen especially for Xbox games. Quality and performance modes hopefully

When cross gen releases end and PS5/Xbox Series games are exclusive. I would love to be wrong!

Isn't Horizon 30fps?

edit: I understand a 60fps can be added. No need to inform me anymore!

They could always offer a performance mode, even in 7 years. It just depends on how much people are willing to sacrifice when it comes to graphics.

My PC is from 2013 or so and I still play games with 60fps or higher.

Not sure what will that change, there are already plenty of pretty good reconstruction methods on consoles.

We know that there is a mode that runs at 30fps, we dont know about the existence of another mode that runs at 60, we didnt know about Ratchet's 60fps mode until a famitsu interview dropped.

I think the first next gen game that comes out sub 60(ie 30 target only) no options for 60 is going to be roasted and rightfully so. If there is no option for it on any platform at 60 FPS I will not be getting it.

The first new gen only game released on Xbox Series is 30 FPS
PS5 has one remake and two arcade games that focus on 60 FPS. R&C is marketed at 30 FPS and will have 60 FPS with a patch (and we still haven't seen it).

The 60FPS train isn't a thing. The first new gen only AC game will be 30 FPS.

I think different modes will last this gen.
Offcourse their will be some games that dont do it. Or are only 30fps because certain reasons like The Medium. But i think they will be the minority overall this gen

I think that, hopefully, it's here to stay. Even more if there is a mid-gen upgrade for the consoles

I'm still expecting mid-gen refreshes that will cater to improved RT/60fps in select titles.

I have no idea just how capable they'll be this time; both consoles are already absolute units out of the box.

One thing's for sure though, we will have really pretty games, even if they target 60fps as a baseline.

It will last until the first true next gen games start to come. But I think performance modes are here to stay, dropping resolution and RT.

I think God of War is the ultimate test. Would be real shit if they didn't support 60fps but we'll have to wait and see.

Series S will probably make this option more common for the main consoles on multiplatform and xbox games

Helpfully it will always be optional. 60fps is nice, but sometimes you want all the eye candy turned up.

I think its here to stay. Quality and performance modes. Of course, the visuals will take more a hit in 60fps mode as we get further into the generation.

Until the end of the gen. Imo there will always be a performance option.

The CPU's in the new consoles make it possible to offer a resolution mode and a performance mode. This will be possible in most games, unless the game is CPU bound.

There's a quote where Phil Spenser said they are aware gamers prefer 60fps and would rather turn down settings then play at 30. So I expect Xbox first party to all have a 60fps option at the very least.

I don't really care for eye candy if I can get 60fps so hopefully until forever.

This.

Last gen the issue was CPU performance. You can't scale CPU performance up / down because it affects actual game design like NPC density, world size, etc. Luckily the current consoles have very good CPU's.
Scaling GPU performance is much much simpler and most of the time doesn't affect game design. Lower resolution, less detail, lower quality ray tracing, etc.

My hope is that at least the option to enable it is there. I used to be able to stomach 30fps, but as I started to play on PC, and now with all these amazing 60fps games on my PS5 it's hard to go back... It's okay on my Switch since the screen is so small and I understand the hardware limitations. But given the power of next gen consoles, it's just hard not to want smooth framerate. Heck I'll go as far as saying I find a 60fps experience more transformative than say RT illumination.

It'll derail soon enough once developers really start to push the systems. And if people really want UE5 demo-like games... welcome 30 fps.

With all the graphics disappointment (lol) in recent Era threads, some people can't get those 30 fps games soon enough.

I think it'll depend on the publisher first and foremost. I could see Microsoft being on of those focusing on 60FPS. For now Sony is on the train as well, with their great strategy to provide the best of two worlds (30/60 modes). Out of the first party EA could have more 60 than 30 FPS games going forward. As I recall their sports titles were 60 FPS for years now and shooters like BF focus on higher framerates, too. Correct me if I am wrong.

I can see rockstar and GTA vi being the first game to be only 30fps on consoles.
I see ND offering 60fps.
I do hope it will have a 60fps mode though.

My educated guess is the start of next year. Also depends on how quickly console makers and developers can implement AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, then there will be the wait for mid-gen refreshes.

As long as Series S continues to be the bottom-tier hardware, there will be 60fps modes on top tier.

We'll see less and less of it as the generation goes on and graphics are pushed harder and harder.

With that said, it'll still be more prominent than it was in any prior generation. Even as graphics are pushed harder & harder, I could see 1080p/60fps being an option for those that desire it.

We know that there is a mode that runs at 30fps, we dont know about the existence of another mode that runs at 60, we didnt know about Ratchet's 60fps mode until a famitsu interview dropped.

AMD's TSR, which is featured in Unreal 5, apparently scales games from 1080p to 4k, which is quite a bit more than traditional reconstruction or checkerboarding techniques do (typically 2x, or 1440p-4k).

I have to imagine thier multi-engine solution FSR will be similar. If the technique works well enough, it's possible we may even see it used to upscale images from resolutions lower than 1080p. So perhaps if a next-gen game runs at a native 1440p 30, we could see 60fps modes reconstructed from 900p 60fps, 720, or even 540p.

That could mean that devs should never really be bottlnecked, unless they use an absurd amount of CPU power (or don't have time to optimized 16-threads).

I think 30/60 is here to stay however most devs will prioritize 30 and 60 FPS modes will vary.

Personally I feel like high frame rates are actually a big part of the "graphics". Anything 30 fps looks like a choppy stuttery mess to me now.

There are always gonna be devs that prefer working with 30fps. As long as their games are virtually locked 30 I'm fine with that. But if the option is available I'm choosing 60 like 90% of the time

I really hope Microsoft make all their games 60 fps.I prefer 60 fps by far. Graphics are good enough.
Sony will push the graphics for all their big cinematic AAA games so 30 fps it is for PS5 this gen.

I wish the 60 fps will become a standard mode shipped with the consoles.

I think it will last, as I imagine having a 60 fps/uncapped mode would be easier for the dev to adapt for the inevitable mid gen refresh or next gen (ps6) boost.
