I agree laying in bed and playing is not comfortable at all.

Just gotta sit.

Or just do this:

Those joycons are removable, my friend. Put the screen somewhere you can see it, next to you on the sofa or whatever and don't worry about having to hold your arms up.

Guilty pleasure when sick or stressed: Switch on the floor next to the bed, me laying face down on bed arms by side peering over the edge.

thanks for bringing this up OP. I bought my Switch towards launch and ran into the same problems you did. It's been gathering dust ever since. I get as far as grabbing it with my left hand before I start getting lost and my body freezes up. Hopefully some day we'll figure out how to properly wield this device, so we may enjoy the Nintendo Switch library of video games. I'll let you know if I come any closer to figuring out how to hold the handheld device in your hands. I think it might have something to do with the feet, but I have a few more weeks of trial/error to go before I'll know for sure.

I'll update this post with any of my findings. Best of luck OP.

I have to admit, the switch is way too heavy to be comfortable in the hands for long. Playing with the joy cons separate is wonderful though. Virtually no strain on my wrists. So . . . any game that works well with Joycons is great that way.

I mean you are all mocking but let's be honest it's hardly comfortable! I basically stopped playing it handheld unless I was reallllllllly desperate (plane / train)

Honestly, your problem has been plaguing handheld devices for ages and even before that with books. You might be a Nobel prize contender if you ever figure this out.

I agree its not the most comfortable handheld, but I probably use it for 3 hours handheld for every 50 docked, so I don't mind

I though the joycon thing was an attachment, but based on what im looking up I don't think mine has detachable joycons...?

mines black and white and smooth on the back, no black detach button or anything like that

I just sit up when I'm using it... I've never been able to lay in bed with any handheld and hold it up without it being a pain.

Welcome to the world of handheld gaming!

I honestly have this problem with regular controllers. It's actually been a serious issue for me, not being able to find a comfortable position. It's weird cuz I don't have this issue when I am using a laptop, but for some reason as soon as my hands have to hold a controller, the same exact positions don't apply anymore for some reason
I know it's 100% a me issue, probably my body I don't take care offgiving out on me bit by bit...

That's a Switch Lite. Smaller than a Switch and with no detachable Joy-Cons. Best I can recommend is just sitting up while you're using it. I don't have a Switch Lite, but that's what I do with my regular Switch (and all my other handhelds).

There is no gaming device on earth that is comfortable to use while lying flat in bed, so nice try OP.

I play my Switch primarily in one of the two comfy recliners we have in the house. I put a big pillow in my lap to support the Switch and then I can play like that without any discomfort. That was how I managed to play through Xenoblade Chronicles: DE, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna last year, primarily in portable mode, without wrecking myself.

Worst ergonomics I've felt in a system before, I loved the Wii U Gamepad, it fit my big hands perfectly and was really light, the Switch besides quite heavy considering the size is really uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time due to its d-pad being really tough to reach with big hands.

Never had a portable system before but the ones I tried at friends' houses along the years were never this bad, probably the main reason my switch never leaves the dock, not even for Off-TV play unfortunately.

It feels like the switch is definitely missing something substantial to grab onto with the fingers on the back of it. Some bulges or something. It is unconfortable for me to hold in handheld mode.

If you have a Switch Lite, then you can't detach your Joycons.

Also, most gooseneck clamps aren't wide enough to clamp your Switch Lite. :(

Shame, but you're going to have to live with this and not being able to play while lying down on the bed. Only the Switch OG can do this, gooseneck clamp et. al.

I've never had any sort of discomfort or pain. Then again, I also read a lot, and use my phone two-handed. I'd also wonder if it's due to hand/arm strength, but none of the kids in the family seem to have problems holding it either...
It's specifically the original switch. I read / used the vita for an ungodly amount of time.... Psp etc etc etc all way back to original gameboy. Something about the switch for me just annoys me after a while. Maybe I should try the lite

The Switch is pretty significantly heavier than the Vita. 400 grams versus 260. Even the 3DS XL is 336 which is a pretty large gap.

It looks like OP has supernatural powers based on his drawing: he floats above his bed.

Perhaps lie on a flat surface after all, I advise you. I can't imagine being comfortable while playing games in a floating position.

A serious answer: you don't have to hold it any differently than you would a book. There are also special add-ons for a more comfortable grip for the Switch/Joy-con, but I have less experience with those.

I sit in bed with my back against a pillow that's against a wall with a very poofy pillow in my lap with the Switch on the lap pillow. No arm or back strain that way.

As I've said in the other thread, it's the worst feeling console I ever had. It hurts my hands and it's just uncomfortable.

Play it on the TV with the Pro controller.

Maybe it's too heavy compared to the other devices?

Y'all are something else. How do you read GRRM or Sanderson hardcover books in bed?
Meeeh I can appreciate these jokes but a hardcover book doesn't require me to manipulate dual analog controllers and face buttons. That's mainly why I find it awkward. Screen is small enough that I want it really close to my face but then that makes it awkward for me to hold and play the game. I wonder what the arm span of people is in here. Maybe if I had shorter arms it would be easier?
