X is already a problem, because of the "Megaman X" naming convention where the not-tenth iteration gets an X anyway.

Just go nuts with whole numbers.

When you start going into arbitrary decimals and fractions is when you'll have a problem from me

All I know is that numbered sequels are never as confusing as two or three reboots just using the original title.

What is the highest actual sequel number in games ever? 15 is up there but is it the highest?

I'd say, ideally after 3 you stop using numbers and just go with subtitles.
But in reality it really depends on how the series is perceived and how clear you need the title to say "yes this one is the mainline sequel".
It's a case by case thing.

if you're series is an iconic series that started 30 years ago, there's no limit. if you started post-ps2 era, 3 is as high as you can go.

Subtitles are pretty awful. Mortal Kombat goes to 4 and then has all of these random interchangeable $5 words like Armageddon, Deception, and Deadly Alliance and nobody knows what the right order of those games is then the 9th one is just called Mortal Kombat and retroactively called MK! Then we have 10 and 11. It's a mess.

numbers are good and useful much of the time

It can be good or bad.

Games like FF and DQ have individual entries, so they could use subtitles.

KH has many non numered entries, but you have to play them all to understand the story so it's really confusing.

Glad to see the majority in concurrence.

I personally want the painful reminder that I'm getting quite old, and that I'm still playing game franchises that existed when I was a kid.

Also, a good frame of reference for newcomers.

56 is the max because once you get to 57 you have to pay that bag for the Heinz sponsorship.

Go balls to the wall so I can look at the release of Final Fantasy XXVII and tell myself "fuck i'm old"

Numbers are fine, as subtitles, but I'm punching someone in the mouth if we get another damn Chronicles, Origins, or Legend of game.

Use both numbers and subtitles and be creative like Dragon Quest.

This is the Vince McMahon mindset that got numbers taken out of WrestleMania because he thought bigger numbers made the event seem ancient.

Any number is better than the Mortal Kombat approach, so generic and lame. I hate it.

To me, more numbers means the series has a history and must be awesome to still be around after all that time. Double bonus props in the 'must be a historical part of the industry' department if the game uses roman numerals as those numbers.

King of Fighters has been the most confusing for me.

They started at 94. Then when they got to 99 they skipped ahead to 2000. Then after 2003 they went all the way back to 11!?

Madness.

Also, clearly 37 is the max a number can go due to this:

The largest canonically numbered entry in a series I can think of is, unfortunately, a spoiler even to point out. It's...uh...a very Japanese-styled game, if that means anything to anyone.

I don't think it really matters. Most companies drop numbers as they become concerned it scares away new players, but for something like Final Fantasy, the number becomes a point of prestige for the project.

Go wild.
I was trying to remember the title this used...

Good work.

Depends on the genre I think. Shooters start dropping the number at around 4 or 5 it seems, but RPGs and fighting games seem to keep on trucking well into the teens and beyond.
