We've now been through seven Playstation launches, five of which were consoles and two of which were handhelds. Some of the launches have better reputations than others, some were more supported by Sony than others, and I figure now that people have had a little time to play some of the launch games, we can go down memory lane from the very beginning.

Below I have all the launches listed. A few things I noticed while making this thread (which took way longer than I thought to make so I hope people are actually interested in the thread lol):
  1. Many of the launches were diverse, and imo, PS2, PS5, and PS Vita were most notable there.
  2. Am I the only one who doesn't shit on the PS2's launch? So many people didn't like it, and while I can't see a classic game, there were some legitimately fun games at launch, and Dynasty Warriors 2 is one of my most memorable experiences on the console simply because I hadn't played many games with that many people on screen, especially who were your allies.
  3. On that note, despite the launch's viewed quality, it didn't seem to be a good gauge as to what was to come.
  4. On the other hand, PS Vita had some well-received games at launch, with Sony pumping out a large number of them throughout the year (34 in total on the Vita). It wasn't a gauge of what was to come, just for the opposite reason that the PS2 had.
  5. PS5's launch is a ton of fun. It certainly has some of the more standout titles of its launch, and when you compare it to the PS3, it's quite a colorful crop of games.

It's the best overall launch by a very large amount. It'd be fine just on PS5 games alone but with backwards compatibility and all that it's just better than everything else. The PS2 launch would be second best because it had a few good games, a ton of trash but backwards compatibility with one of the best libraries ever.

PS2: Dynasty Warriors 2 and SSX great launch titles. Probably the two launch titles I've played the most out of any ps launch.

PSVita's launch titles were actually so good. Unfortunate what happened to the Vita though. I'm having a real good time with the PS5 launch games. Demon's Souls is incredible and I have Miles Morales lined up along with Spider-Man Remastered. Next gen patches and BC helps a lot too though.

Seen every console launch and these last 2 have been extremely forgettable from my perspective. Feels like more of the same pandering to the expectations of a perceived majority.

Generic and safe. At least around here those things do get people excited so it appears like the right road for these companies to make a guaranteed amount of money.

I think it's the best PS launch.
Ps Vita really had a stellar launch lineup.
PS5 wins almost by default really

It's the best Playstation launch easily and other than the Dreamcast it's the best launch lineup of all time.

What do you feel was more memorable with some of the early ones?

Sony typically has trash launches in my opinion the PS5 being no different but looking at them all side by side I suppose that PS5 wins by default.

I don't get why PS5 is getting so many votes. It was a terrible launch. Barely any stock and only 2-3 games that were legit worth playing.

I disagree. I think PS5 is easily the best PS launch and probably the most compelling launch line up for a console to me.

Demon's Souls, Spider Man, Astrobot, Pathless, Sackboy, Assassins Creed, Bugsnax and a few others. Most launch games are pretty underwhelming (or one great one and a few mediocre) but I think PS5 has quite a few great games.

The PS1 launch was pretty special if you lived through it and I struggle to say anything but that one.

That console shifted the perception of what consoles were and who they were aimed at forever. Going into my local EB and seeing a PlayStation plugged into a massive projector running Wipeout and blasting out The Prodigy was unreal. It felt like a seismic shift.

CG video, CD audio, games and marketing not aimed at little kids with cartoon characters...

That demo disc with the T-Rex and the manta ray was enough to blow my socks clean off.

As far as stock, I'm really just talking about the games. PS2 didn't have much stock either, but I'm judging it strictly by the games that were developed and released at launch.

My guess about the votes is that many people found more than three games worth playing. =P I mean, I guess it's possible that when I get around to Sackboy and Planet Coaster or if I get to Valhalla that I won't find any of them worth playing, but I'm doubting it right now.

Yup, plus the ps plus collection basically being a hand me down of new stuff for people that didnt have them before. Imagine if you bought a ps2 and it came with all 3 crash games, ff7, SotN and so on

PS2. Some trash but SSX, Dynasty Warriors, Gungriffon were fun. Even Orphen and Summoner were janky fun.

PS4 for me because I didn't have a capable PC back then and it was my first time seeing Battlefield in 60 fps with full sized multiplayer which actually blew me away at the time and I sunk 2000 hours into it

PS5 dropped and I love the back compat and Spider-Man but nothing will come close to the play time I got out of the ps4 on launch

I had multiple PS1s as a kid with a lot of games but don't recall the launch, and I didn't pick up a ps2 on launch
PS3 I got for $600 about 2 months post launch and was blown away by resistance but thought the lineup sucked overall

PS2 legit felt super special and like I was witnessing the launch of something entirely new. I didn't get one at launch but my close friend did and I spent many hours at his house during the launch period and had a really great time with Tekken Tag, SSX, and even got into Armored Core 2 having had no experience with the first or any PS1 era spinoffs. It felt like a huge leap in fidelity. I also acknowledge that I was a teenager that was just a few years into identifying as a video game enthusiast, and it was only the 2nd home console launch I'd experienced since self-identifying that way, so I was certainly far more impressionable.

I'm having a heck of a great time with the launch titles of the PS5, though, and still playing it almost daily since launch. This feels to my tastes like quite a robust launch lineup to me, even if nearly everything I'm playing is crossgen, it feels like PS5 optimizations are demonstrating a huge leap in performance to me and the new controller is awesome and the SSD load times are insane.

Shout out to PS4 for being the first ever console launch where I had achieved good enough economic standing as an adult that I was able to purchase a PS4 at launch without having to subsidize it with trade ins or aid from my parents. I legit felt great about that, but admittedly I didn't really, really enjoy any games on it until 2015. Launch window didn't offer much to my own tastes.

Ahhh, I love personal stories like this! Especially with the PS1 because for me, the launch looks like nothing, but was special for someone else.

PS4 also has a special place for me due to it being a surprise gift and how that came to be:

My PS4 was a surprise gift from my brother and mom. My brother bought an Xbox One for himself, and my mom thought I'd feel left out if I didn't have a PS4. Mind you, I lived (and still live) by myself, adult with a career, and I told her earlier I didn't need a PS4 since there was plenty I still had to play on a PS3. But my brother convinced her to just get a PS4 as one big gift, in secret. He and his wife searched websites for an opening, they found one on Best Buy, called my mom, she made the payment quickly, and that was that.

After the purchase was made, he talked to me and told me about a "friend" who bought a PS4 but didn't buy any games and asked what games he should get. I thought that was weird of him, but whatever:

Me: "What games does he like?"
Brother: "Well, Mass Effect, JRPGs... he has similar tastes to you."
Me: "Hmm... well, I'd say Resogun, which is a downloadable arcade shooter, and probably Assassin's Creed Black Flag."
Brother: "He only has the money to buy one."
Me: "Resogun's not really expensive, but if he can only budget $60 and wants a full-fledged game, then Black Flag."
Brother: "All right, I'll let him know."

Little did I know I just told them I wanted for Christmas! xD~~

So the surprise was great. I was visiting for Christmas, she pulled out a surprise present, I posted a picture of it on FB, said, "SURPRISE PRESENT! WHAT COULD IT BE?"

My brother goes:

"It's a picture of a middle finger in a box. There's weights in there too. She drew it herself. She took an art class for 6 months to get the shading right. It's actually quite good."

This was Christmas Eve. On Christmas, I started to connect the dots from the conversation I had with my brother a while back and figured out that it had to be the PS4. And yup, it was, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag was one of the games.

When I drove home after Christmas, I got my free trial of PS+ and downloaded the Instant Game Collection, which also gave me way more PS3 games to play. But I did this after buying Resogun, so I never got it for free. No matter, as I was happy to support it because it ended up being my favorite launch game. It looked like something that was impossible to do on the PS3, and while it did receive a PS3 port, it was more blurry, with far less on the screen and half the frame rate. It just wasn't as good of a game being played like that as the blur made it hard to see how close you were to bullets, and half the frame rate was killer gameplay-wise for a game like this. But the PS4 version? Awesome, co-op OR solo. I ended up buying all DLC for it over the next year or so.

Black Flag was my first Assassin's Creed and was a lot of fun. I loved sailing around in it and loved the increased visual fidelity the PS4 provided. I was never able to finish the main quest -- the game became kind of repetitive -- and I REALLY didn't like some of the tailing missions since many late-game seemed poorly done. But as a whole? It was a lot of fun, beating some of the Legendary Ships felt great, and I enjoyed the sword fighting. No regrets "asking" for this one. ;)

I am split between the PS2 and PS5. Both were really great launches.

Shout out to the Vita as well. It had a really cool line up of games.

I see about 7 "major" New PS5 titles (Non-remasters/special editions) while being generous and some are going to rate the launch based on these. Of course i'm not saying smaller games can't be fun or anything but even the PS2 list in comparison seems pretty okay then. I'm actually glad the launch does not feel rushed, it is a sign of launching a game when it's ready.

To be honest, PS5 wins and it really isn't even close. Playstation launches have always been pretty rough, the PS3 and PS4 being particularly bad. But the PS5 has a fun little pack in game, a beautiful exclusive Souls game at launch, a Spider-Man game and a cutesy kids platformer. Not to mention the third party games releasing alongside it and the patched last gen games as well.

PS3 getting no love yet.

But there were some harbingers there (everything looking gray and dark, fewer games than most of its launches). I do remember Resistance getting some hype, being a step above Sony's efforts the last go-around.

The ps5 launch line up is second to none, even if it had a bunch of games that also got a PS4 launch. I mean, new spiderman, astros playroom, demons souls, sackboy, goddamn.

Just realized I forgot to add PSVR. I guess with its being an accessory to the PS4, I didn't even consider it, but it probably was worth putting in.

PSP for me personally. there was a large and diverse range of games, and it was mind blowing to have ps2 visual quality in my hand.

i'm confused by ps5 getting so many votes. astro is a great game, but I think that and souls are the only new "ps5 games"? I guess if you really like souls I can see why though, it's just not my cup of tea. otherwise I am enjoying playing all of my ps4 games since I never had a pro

PS5 by default for me, since it is the only Playstation console I've owned at launch. I've owned all of them except for the PSP, but usually end up waiting a couple of years before jumping on.

I do think it is a great launch though so it gets my vote!

Best for me. Astrobot, Demon's Souls and Miles Norales are awesome games (already have 140 hours in DS), playing GoT in 60fps is just pure bliss, and just bought WRC 9 which is also awesome with the dualsense controller. Stellar launch.

PSP was mindblowing in general, I felt. The PS2 was great, but hardware-wise, it was REALLY bad at launch, and it felt behind (two controller ports, no internet out of the box like Dreamcast). PSP felt like a huge step up, especially in handhelds.

Only launch I've been around are the ps3 and onward. For me, the PS5 has been handedly the best. Great launch titles, games that I was already playing, playing even better at launch, and paying what I thought was a great price for the hardware ($400.00), it's been pretty great so far. Plus I think the dualsense is Sony's best controller to date.

This thread has made me realise I've never actually bought any Playstation device right at launch ( been gaming since the 80s for reference). I recall buying the Vita around April 2012 so I guess that's launch window? PS1/2/3 and PSP were all bought 6 months- 1 year post launch. I didn't get Ps4 till Xmas 2015 and I have no pressing desire to get 5 anytime soon.

PS5 has my favorite launch game, Spider-Man, but also feels the most dried up only weeks after launch.

If you only include day 1 then ps5, otherwise PS2.

I think Vita was my favourite but PS5 is close behind. It has a really solid mix of good cross gen games and full exclusives like Demon's Souls and Astro.

Edit: Shit I forgot that PSP launched with Lumines. That's maybe my favourite launch game ever.

PS Vita was really solid. A chunk of people's most talked about titles are actually at launch! This isn't a dig either it's great that system defining software was dropped at launch.

The Vita had an amazing launch. Plenty of high quality games over a diverse range of genres. I still play a couple of its launch games.

PS5 is the best but playstation launches have always been complete ass

a cross gen expansion pack with Ray tracing turned on puts it at #1

I don't get why PS5 is getting so many votes. It was a terrible launch. Barely any stock and only 2-3 games that were legit worth playing.

It broke all records in terms of stock available at launch. Even more than the PS4. And you had Demon's Souls, Astrobot etc...

Most PlayStation consoles barely have decent games at launch.

PS5 launch was really good for me and this in the middle of a pandemic. There are so many games I want to play.

Of the three launches I've been a part of:

PS3 - Really enjoyed Resistance: Fall of Man
PS4 - Really enjoyed Killzone: Shadowfall and Knack
PS5 - Really enjoyed Astro's Playroom, Spider-Man Miles Morales, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure

I'd say the PS5 is the best yet.

It's honestly been the most fun I've had with a console at launch. The games are really good and I also have my PS4 library seamlessly working. It's been great
