What makes you even remotely think they want to do this? Distrust in the government is a pillar of their entire platform. It's like...the pillar.

I think the issue here is that this time it actually hurts them. Prior to the election they all joined in with Trump in pushing that mail-in voting was bad. The end result is them continually being shocked during the election when the mail-in voting started and Biden got significantly more of that vote. That was at least in some part to their base being told that they shouldn't vote that way. Then they spent several months telling their voters that Dems had stole in the Presidential election. Fast forward to the Senate runoffs and they lose two seats in Georgia. So, they're now at a point where their voter base doesn't trust mail-in voting and believes that elections are rigged.

There's always talk about how Republicans try to suppress voter turnout, particularly in minority communities. But they may have inadvertently done that to their own base by convincing them that their vote is meaningless because Democrats have found a way to rig elections in their favor.

When you view the other party as out to get you, your way of life, livelihood etc. it's really not hard for you to keep your party in check because even though what you're doing is probably hurting your people more. You're directing their anger elsewhere so it blinds them. It's the same strategy that basically everyone in a position of power has used for all of history and it still works.

If the insurrection isn't made out to be a complete, "anti-American" disgrace by the justice system via stern penalty, they'll likely just turn to further acts of terrorism instead of voting to express their ideology.

It appears to me that many that are being charged for their involvement seem to believe they did nothing wrong. It's an emboldened movement that's occurring well outside of the bounds of functional democracy and I think a lot of the future of American democracy is hanging on the way the nation handles its response through the justice system. It still feels too early to call right now, I just still personally worry that there exist a series of consequences that won't work out in favor of democracy because they'll treat the issue too lightly.

It barely hurt them in an election where the GOP nominee got the most votes of any GOP candidate in history. Also I don't think "voter fraud" is not the same exact argument as "mail-in voting is rigged"; especially not when their targets post election were the voting machines and ballot counters. The broad point the GOP has well-established with it's supporters is "Do not trust elections, especially when you lose" which targets the process in totality. They have no reason (or interest) to fix suppressed GOP voters; but they have every reason to throw gasoline on the suppression of Democratic voters.

Because the majority of them love guns and being racist. The people who run for office cater directly to them and they eat it up. They don't have a platform other than "we hate everyone who isn't us."

Why would this hurt them in the eyes of their constituents? All they have to do is tout the same things they've been saying since the 1800s, watch out for the coloreds, they're going to take your guns, god and Jesus.

And like always it'll work

Unfortunately this is tragically true.

Unbelievable the same fucking trick finds its pigeons tens of thousands of years later 🤦🏻‍♂️

I think the whole thing may cost them around 1% of their voters, when all is said and done. The vast majority of them will go out and vote, but hey...a 1% loss might mean a few seats here and there. I'll take it.
