Definitely the most wide-open its been in awhile. I guess Sekiro might eek out the media awards as kind of a From Software recognition award for the last decade, but the difficulty of it might limit it in publications internal discussions.

Some other musings: Disco Elysium will do well in PC publications and maybe surprise in one or two other non-major PC publications. Death Stranding will win some GOTY and Most Disappointing awards simultaneously if pre-release reviews/impressions are any indication. Resident Evil 2 will do real well, but the fact at the end of the day it is a remake, no matter how different, will hold it back some.

For Era, I feel like it will be Fire Emblem in a stunner. Logic being, since there is no consensus this year, the power of the say 20% of voters who are Nintendo-exclusive in there vote will give it the push it needs to win. See 2014 with Bayonetta 2 on how it could happen.

Reset era Will choose something from Sony or Sekiro. The media may choose re2make or a multiplayer game.

Tbh I don't know which will be the goty. I play games at my own pace and just can't keep up.

I have a document that I use throughout the year to workshop what my GOTY is going to be. I have games that haven't released here that I preemptively am assuming are going to place but those are merely based on current preconceptions and are likely to change. Right now the titles that I'm thinking of are currently:

Luigi's Mansion 3
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Mario Maker 2
Resident Evil 2
Links Awakening
Control
Outer Worlds
Apex Legends
Astral Chain

Haven't played but would like to before GOTY voting:
Pokemon Sword & Shield
Death Stranding
Devil May Cry V

Nothing too controversial or unexpected to see in a top 10 as of now, save for perhaps Apex Legends. It's going to be a difficult year to fit into a top 10 list for sure. As for where ERA ends up, I think Death Stranding and RE2 are likely bets.

I see DS winning an award or two but not GOTY. Once the game is mature though, we can expect it win awards left right and center, maybe.

For media in general, it's going to be pretty close between Sekiro and Resident Evil 2, probably Star Wars too if it ends up being great.

As for Era, Nintendo crowd will be mostly voting for Pokemon and Fire Emblem, followed by Zelda and Astral Chain. While generally, people will also vote for the same games as mainstream media picks. No matter how good some games are, if they're not popular enough, there will be no chance for them to shine. I'm talking about the less popular games like Disco Elysium, Control, The Outer Worlds, etc.

I honestly don't have a clue. Just hope it's not a boring choice because of a need to pick something that's just popular and safe.

It should be Ace Combat 7 though.

Eh, I highly doubt Outer Worlds could win best RPG (probably a coin flip between Disco Elysium and Three Houses), much less GOTY, especially given that TGAs are decided by a consensus.

Some decent predictions, but if it were me I'd predict a few different things. For best indie you can take out My Friend Pedro and Afterparty and sub those with Slay the Spire and Baba is You. Sayonara Wild Hearts could also be in best indie, but I think it will be nominated for best Mobile game, Best Original Score and Best Art Direction (and I'm hoping it wins that category). Best family game will be an all Nintendo category (LM3, Super Mario Maker 2, Link's Awakening, Pokemon) except for Goose Game being the one not Nintendo nominee. I'd also say Crash Team Racing will get a Racing/Sports nomination, but hey BOOM a Madden nomination would be great! These nomination predictions are wishful thinking on my part, but I want to believe the Game Awards nominate Ace Combat 7 for best Original Score (and best action, but your list looks pretty valid maybe except sub MUA3 with COD MW or Apex Legends) and Joe Zieja, the voice of Claude Von Riegan from FE 3H getting a best performance nomination.

Also Disco ELysium is ZA/UM's first game, which makes that a debut indie and the lock to win that award if you ask me.

Res 2 will win, Sekiro will place 2nd here. So it is written. Pretty interesting to have the real critical heavy hitters so early in the year. Disco Elysium will be the genius game that is overlooked because it's not on console.

You're forgetting the huge From fanbase on Era, remember Bloodborne beat Witcher 3.
Sekiro won't have a chance. You're forgetting the huge Kojima and Sony fanbase everywhere, and exclusives always get a voting boost and it is coming to PC but in 2019 it's a PS4 exclusive. Haven't confirmed it but someone said that DS has also recieved the most 10/10 out of all the games released this year. So, it really doesn't matter if a loud minority thinks it's boring if there are more people thinking it's a masterpiece and will devote their life to present and defend the positive things about the game.
Death Stranding will win the GOTY and it won't be close.

Fire emblem is going to surprise a lot of people here. Also Pokémon if it reviews well.

This has been one of Nintendo's strongest years, and it will show.

It's kind of crazy how great the 2nd half of the year in particular has been for Nintendo. I'm not sure which Nintendo game will reign supreme though, it'll probably be between Pokemon and Fire Emblem I guess.

Death Stranding here, Death Stranding at the Game Awards.

Death Stranding ain't winning in here lol

I mean if you want to go the exclusive route then Nintendo arguably have the bigger fanbase here and they have a few games scoring higher, also about media awards.

The thing with GOTY awards is that each publication makes it a team effort to decide GOTY and not based on the score they gave the game, Death Stranding could very well win this year if a lot people in each team end up loving it but what are the chances of that happening? You also have to remember it's coming late and is a long game so there will be a lot of people who haven't played/finished it yet.

This is always good fun for me
DeoGame I think your picks are pretty dead-on
I will just guess for fun various GOTY picks without using any duplicates so I can be wrong.

Giant Bomb- Apex Legends (It's The PUBG argument once again and boy did they hate Disco Elysium on the beastcast this week runner up Control)

Gamespot- Outer Wilds (so much discussion about this game from them Runner up Sekiro)

IGN- Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order (the staff always overvalues anything Star Wars more than any other media outlet I expect this game will be awesome Runner up Resident Evil 2 and if you could make any GOTY bet watch them award Gears 5 best Xbox game )

Eurogamer- Resident Evil 2 Remake (one of the most popular favorites to win it's the going win more GOTY is my guess Runner Up Death Stranding)

Easy Allies- Sekiro Shadows Die Twice ( This will be one of the best debates to listen to DMC 5/RE 2/Star Wars/Kingdom Hearts 3 will all be fought for by an individual Easy member Runner Up RE 2)

Kotaku- The Outer Worlds ( No game better fits what the entire staff is talking about right now and it's a fantastic game as well Runner Up Fire Emblem Three Houses)

Rock Paper Shotgun - Disco Elysium (They called it a flawed masterpiece Runner Up Slay The Spire)

Polygon- Remnant: From The Ashes ( Polygon likes it under the radar contenders or tends to troll with its debates in the past Runner Up Untitled Goose Game)

Resetera- The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (This is the Green Book scenario from The Oscars There is not one or two these are the winners it's over this year. we are a diverse community who has our personal favorites and because it's so divided we pick something we all think is good, not groundbreaking Runner Up Sekiro)

Pretends to be shocked gif
;)

Seriously, I don't see why anyone would doubt it. There are already a bunch of critics calling it a masterpiece, a bigger bunch of regular gamers will do the same, some will say it's the best game ever, a small minority screaming from the hills that it's a boring walk simulator won't change much.

TGA - Sekiro

Same. I doubt DS will win big at TGA other than Best game Direction or Best Performance.
Even though the game is not out yet I feel like the die has been cast in terms of audience review, and can only go down not up after release.

Edit: Wait were you being sarcastic. lol

If something like RDR2 ended up at #3, then yea, I don't see it playing out any better for DS when it has similar aspects you just know ERA will gripe about lol, on top of having reviewed worse.

If the main argument is that people won't feel that passionate about all the other great games that came out this year (I doubt it), then that's not saying much.

I could see The Outer Worlds being giant bomb's too, seems everyone on staff likes it.
if shadowbringers gets any recognition it will be Kotaku, that site seems to have most on staff that played it.

Shadowbringers is my personal GOTY by far and it isn't even close... I could see RE2 or DMC5 getting a lot of recognition. This year is interesting because while there was a lot of interesting and good games we didn't have any that were like "industry changers" per say.

Damn. That's a hot list. I like it a lot. I didn't play any of Ancestors.. can't say that I ever will XD. What did you like about it? And the first 30 levels of Baba is You is absolutely amazing. But once the difficulty spiked and the open freedom to solve puzzles however I wanted dissipated, it was hard for me to keep going. But yes. If Outer Wilds doesn't get its proper due, there will be some STERNLY WORDED EMAILS GOING OUT.
I played Ancestors on release date (which I usually never do) so no one knew what was going on and what got me interested in the first place was reviews that showed the initial screen from the game that said "We won't help you much". The sense of wonder and discovery (and lack of tutorial) was wonderful when playing it. After a point when you realize the limits of the world, the magic is gone, and knowing the limits I understand the review scores. I actually can't recommend anyone to buy it or even play it since there are so many other good games out there.
Also, my list do not contain any PS4 or Switch games since I don't own either. If I had access to them, I'm sure my list would've looked different and not be as hot (Outer Wilds would still be no. 1 though)

It will be RE2 for both media and Era.

But it will be one of those years where GOTY awards will be quite spread out with a lot of different games picking up GOTY awards from various places.

Finally the Huber/Brad/Ian group is split allowing for other games to get a realistic shot, Huber has to rep RE2, Ian will go for Control and Brad for Sekiro. On top of that Ben will be adamant about DMCV And Kyle will likely vote for Fire Emblem or The Outer Worlds. I see Damiani, Blood and Jones being the ones who chose who deserves their GOTY depending on what they enjoyed the most. I think RE2 will come out on top but I wouldn't be surprised if something like Mario Maker 2 (Don hype) or The Outer Worlds manages to snag the win.

Also expect a "best throwback" award for MUA3

For me, the winner so far has to be Fire Emblem: Three Houses, although there are still a few games I haven't played yet (most notably The Outer Worlds).

I fully expect Three Houses to win absolutely zero awards though, just because games of that kind rarely win GotY awards.

RE2's eligibility falls into question. I could see it rank highly though. In any case, FE: Three Houses, Sekiro, Pokémon, DMC5, and Luigi's Mansion will all do well on Era.

Wondering if DMC5 will get a GOTY nomination at TGA, I highly doubt it.

I don't think it'll even be in the top 5 of Era's list tbh. Will be in top 10 for sure though.

Fire Emblem will get ignored by every big site and it will make me mad and not care about whatever they actually pick.

I played most of what people consider to be GOTY material this year, and I can safely say Disco Elysium and Outer wilds are the best games of this year by FAR. In fact I think they're just as good as GoW last year (and should win by a landslid too), but being small and not as popular as other titles is hurting their chances obviously.
