Days Gone was a big surprise for me this year. I understand it was somewhat divisive, but I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would.

Sekiro was okay, but I think these games (Soulslikes) are just getting too difficult now for me to enjoy anymore, and the gatekeeping fanbase doesn't help the appeal of sticking with them.

RE2 and Sekiro seem like the most likely candidates to win Goty. Theres also a chance Outer Worlds or Three Houses takes it.

DMCV will end up in the top 5 but it doesnt have a big enough audience to take goty, Outer Wilds, Pokemon and Death Stranding will likely end up in the top ten, maybe LM3 too.

I don't even know if I should be surprised at how many people think Keighley chooses TGA winners himself. I'm not sure he even has a vote.

Been thinking about this. Obviously Era tends to veer east (specifically Playstation) while TGA goes west. Given that there wasn't a huge western blockbuster that did well critically this year, it's going to be interesting to see what the TGA's pick. They will probably pick something still popular in the west, like Sekiro or RE2. Outer worlds is also a factor.

For Era, I think DMC5 and Three Houses will be a much larger factor. I don't get they'll get as many votes but they'll be put higher on peoples lists more frequently. But if I'm being honest, RE2 is probably a lock for here. This place adores the game.

My final predictions:

TGA - close between RE2 and Sekiro, but probably RE2

Era - RE2

Robbed - Shadowbringers

I don't understand how people can internally aggregate "Game of the Year" across dozens of websites and publications. They all pick different games. There is no consensus and there is no definitive GOTY.

For Resetera, specifically, I imagine it will be Resident Evil 2, followed by Sekiro, followed by Outer Worlds.

RE2 seems like the one people gush about the most. It's a great game, but Sekiro was something else. Played through it 4 times and itching to play it again.

I think the awards will go in a lot of different directions this year similar to 2012 with no real popular consensus pick.

For era, it'll be close but Resident Evil 2 seems the most likely.

Capcom deserves the winner, runner-up and third place with DMCV, RE2 and Iceborne.

I think the Outer Worlds is the only one of those three I would consider for GOTY.

Does it get better? I'm about 9 hours in and I'm finding Outer Worlds competently made but far from exceptional.

Sekiro is the only thing I've played this year that I feel is really GOTY worthy. Though I haven't gotten around to most of the Switch exclusives of the last few months yet.

I just realised I haven't played any of the contenders. Except Shadowbringers but even then I've barely started that.

I really hope Outer Wilds get recognition. It's one of my top games of this generation (and of all time)
  1. Outer Wilds
  2. Baba is You
  3. Slay the Spire
  4. The Outer Worlds
  5. Gears 5
  6. Bloodstained
  7. Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey
  8. Blazing Chrome
  9. Wargroove
  10. Creature in the Well
  • Sekiro (Currently playing)
  • Control
  • Disco Elysium
  • DMC5
  • Metro Exodus
  • Life is Strange 2
  • RE2

I had a good time with it. It's not drastically different from the Fallout games aside from better visuals, a new setting and more humor. But it won me over considering I wasn't even planning to buy it initially.

There was a lot about Sekiro I liked but it was hampered by the difficulty. It's the first Souls/like that made me realize I'm not a big fan of the sub-genre anymore. I know "boy, it's really hard" was chic when Souls got popular, but the difficulty of these games keeps increasing and I'm just not having fun anymore.

Era has a lot of hardcore Nintendo fans so expect them to push at least one Switch game, as middle of the road is it may be.

Weird thing to say given the sheer number of great games the Switch got over these past 5 months. There have been at least one 85+ Switch exclusive per month since June.
Yeah, I've barely had a break from Switch releases. A lot of great stuff has been coming out.

I'll have a better idea of my personal GOTY once Fallen Order and Death Stranding are both finished.

I suspect that Anthem will win overall GOTY from most major media outlets. On here, it will be a closer call. Catherine's updated version will earn plenty of votes but in the end WWE 2k20 is going to emerge victorious.

Death Stranding got a lot of 9.5+ scores, and I think it will have a lot of mainstream pull due to marketing, graphics and the star power of Reedus and Mikkelsen. I think it has a good chance of getting the most GotY awards because the weeb votes will be split by so many great Japanese games (RE2, Sekiro, Fire Emblem to name a few).

I think Era's GotY will be RE2, or maybe Pokémon.

The media will choose Death Stranding, alas. Some will probably even pick The Outer Worlds or Sekiro or some such. Meanwhile I'm hoping Disco Elysium will at least appear on some lists, because it deserves GOTY more than anything else released this year.

people are underestimating sekiro.

FROM's fanbase is very diehard, hardcore and will vote accordingly here on resetera.

whether it's better or worse than soulsborne, that's irrelevant, it's FROM's and that's what matters.

I love soul's games but I enjoyed NioH 2 beta much more than Sekiro.

Sekiro didn't have any of the stuff that makes soul's games enjoyable for me; atmosphere, exploration, the rpg/item
aspect ot it, fashion souls...

I wouldn't vote for Sekiro.

Death stranding was gonna be the huge game that sweeped the awards but it underperformed.

Will this be the year that a From Software game finally gets its deserved recognition from Western media outlets?

Outer Wilds is not only the best game I've played this year but maybe the best of the whole generation. It's a shame the PS4 release doesn't seem to have got much attention

I hope the game will come to Switch. The audience seems to be more receptive to these games so hopefully it will get even more attention next year.

I guess this is the benefit of having a year with no real standout games. Last year it was clear it would be God of war VS Red dead, this year is much more open and that's exciting!

Outer Worlds will be up there, sure borderlands 3 and control will be high up. I hope Star Wars earns a spot.

honestly I thing that is wong. as far as a year goes, I think 2019 is better than 2018, its just there isnt 1 game everyone "should play" instead a bunch of great games at difrent groups.

not according to its metacritic/open critic. a 85 avrage isnt getting you goty at most outlets. the only one I could see geving it is giant bomb simply b/c everyone seems to like it there.

RE2 is a remake and many won't have it on the list because of that. Sekiro's difficulty takes it out of the running. Those are the two games that scored better than The Outer Worlds.

Gears 5 won't win because it's the 6th game in the series. Control runs so poorly on consoles that I think performance takes it out of the running.

The Outer Worlds is the safest bet, unless RE2 is allowed on the lists.

Only japanese games can win here on Era, so It will most likely be Sekiro. In a wider debate however, its still wide open. Sekiro might take it, or The Outer Worlds, since its a good game and anthesis to the corporatism that Fallout has come to represent. However, if Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order gets 85+ metacritic, its going to be the overall consenus GOTY I think. Everybody wants a good Star Wars game, and a return to form for the franchise.
