I've only played the PSN version which has atrocious load times that made me stop playing it. So how bad is the port compared to the GBA port?

A youtube video for FFV came on my feed just a day or two ago for this very subject.

Give it a go, the author recommends the GBA version as the best version to play even though it misses the FMVs. The PC version takes some real creative liberties with the sprites which some people absolutely do not like.

A patch exists for the GBA version that fixes framerate issues and makes the music much closer to the original, using that in mGBA is absolutely the best way to play it in my opinion.

it's ugly but you can for the most part mod a lot of the rough edges away on PC.

I played it first on PC and it is one of if not my favorite FF games. Even the unmodded PC release is still worth playing if you have no other option -- because it's still Final Fantasy V.

technically when modded it has the highest quality enemy portraits of any port, as well.

It is really great, IMO. The spritework is more detailed and more faithful adaptations of the original concept art. Some people really hate it, but overall the graphical overhaul is nice. Good battle backgrounds and spell effects. The upres/tiling problems for maps is the main problem.

I think III is the only one you really want to avoid on Steam nowadays because of save corruption bugs that never got fixed. V & VI are just ugly but otherwise fine. It really bums me out that I-VI don't have definitive versions available on all modern platforms.

The folks at r/finalfantasy have a section dedicated to the different game versions.

Its a tad bit outdated unfortunately, but not by much.

Biggest things are that it doesn't include the FF8 Steam or remaster releases, and FF3 got an update last year on steam that essentially makes it the definitive version of the game

Oh they didn't get fixed? Figured they would have been with last years update.

I've played it a bunch on mobile and it doesn't bother me too much. The character sprites are weird, but at least they didn't do the weird world map like they did in FF6. The only main issue functionally is that sometimes you have to scroll through the list to get to things like "Item" when a character's turn comes up, but other than that I didn't have any issues.

That update didn't mention bug fixes but It's possible they fixed it and didn't say anything I suppose.

PC version is fine if it is your only version of FF5 as besides the visuals and movement no longer being grid based, not a lot else was changed.

PSP Style Battle Sprites :: Final Fantasy - Modding

IT'S DONE!!! This project was born from my extreme disappointment with the iOS/PC remake of both FFV and FFVI. I don't come from a strong graphic design background, but I have a good artistic eye in general, so I figured I'd see what I could do by using the FFIV PSP sprites as a template. I...

Same here.

I consider the mobile/Steam port of FFVI terrible. I don't have half as many qualms with FFV's.

I decided to go with the PC/Steam despite the ugliness of it, they did update/adjust it in meaningful ways outside of the graphics.
The sprites are bad in a mismatching way but I'm gonna say that compared to 6 I don't think 5's original SNES sprites were all that amazing.

The mods I have is one to make the portraits actually fit the dialogue box and some edits to the UI that I made to make said box's borders less busy, remove mobile buttons like the ever present dash icon/exclamation points when near people etc.
They're available on the VG Research & Modding discord and a modder there has recently figured out how to make further edits to things like the battle UI so hopefully we'll see some some progress there soon.

God tier monster sprites but the other overworld character sprites are =/
Hoping for some FFVI style mods myself one day. But as someone said FFV's character sprites aren't hit as much from the visuals because they weren't as detailed as VI's as naturally I'm sure they took what they learned from IV and V to make VI's characters so expressive in the SNES original.

Why does Bartz's sprite have a different hair colour to his character portrait? Never understood this.

From what I understand the character sprites for the early games were made first then Amano kinda did his own thing for promo/cover art material. I think 6 was the only one that had his character portrait art originally.
