I'm sure his point was that motion resolution is absolutely destroyed by camera motion blur. When you move the camera all the pretty bells and whistles and higher pixel count you get with resolution mode are no longer visible since the image is blurred.

And yet even within the motion blur, it's still not shimmering to the point it looks like any and all foliage is sparkling!

Having said that, if Guerrilla releases a patch that tweaks the AA to remove shimmering, I'll happily jump to Performance mode. I don't think the resolution downgrade is nearly as awful as the edge issues.

Having played HZD on a 3090, Quality mode in Forbidden West looks like an improvement while (right now) Performance looks like a downgrade, and I think the 30fps option plays well enough that I never feel like I'm fighting the frame rate.

I'll flip back and forth for a minute but I have a feeling the performance mode will be more than sharp enough for me.

I would like to play in 60fps but the game benefits so much of 4k. I wish they would try to improve their checkerboard rendering.

I'm more in the realm of HDR on or Off for this one. Shame they didn't use the PS5 calibrator for it. Seems a huge miss-step

On quality mode and the pop in, in this is outrageous. Only really happens in cut scenes but it's so distracting. I'm not sure if performance mode would help.

The game looks good but hasn't blown me away to the extent mentioned in the reviews.

Haven't played enough to give a properly qualified opinion, but for now I'm probably sticking to the Performance mode. The 30 FPS in resolution mode actually feels pretty solid to me, and hypothetically if that was the only way to play the game, I'm all but sure I would adjust to it just fine and enjoy the experience from that standpoint. But putting it next to a Performance mode doing 60FPS, so far I'm not seeing a big enough jump in image quality to justify going from 60 to 30 FPS. I'm probably going to keep checking out Resolution mode later on in the story to see if that impression changes for me, but that's where I'm at for now.

That more or less is in line with how I typically approach performance vs resolution modes. Only exception to me was Guardians of the Galaxy, where dropping down to 1080p to get 60FPS for that performance mode was just too much of a resolution hit to me.

Midgar, With Love
I swapped between the two somewhat regularly so that I would have ample experience with them in case I needed to mention the tech stuff in my review of the game, so I can't be of much help here. I will say that I ultimately enjoyed Quality a bit more.

I've been playing in Favor Resolution for the past 2 hours & it has been fantastic. There's no reason for me to play in 60fps at all.

Unless... how crazy would I be to hook up an mClassic to the PS5 for Favor Performance? Completely unnecessary?

I picked performance in every other game I've played so far that had this option on an LG B8 OLED, HFW is the first one where I prefer Quality. In performance mode the IQ takes a hit that I could take, but the foliage shimmering is too annoying. Choosing between 60fps with shimmering or 30fps with ridiculously crispy IQ I'm going for the IQ. The game is so gorgeous that it's actually worth sacrificing 60fps to me.
The quality mode is really great here. I don't even see any motion stuttering in 30fps, which is only possible on an OLED if the motion blur is really good, and it is in this game. If not for the noticeably worse input latency compared to performance mode I wouldn't even care it was 30fps.

I usually go performance / 60 fps mode, but here Quality looks a lot better than performance so quality it is. It looks unreal.

There is literally no scenario where I'd ever chose to play a game at 30fps if there's an available alternative with decent performance.

Quality mode for me, just like I did in Forza Horizon 5...The image quality is just unmatched. I was able to play at 60fps for a few minutes and going back to 30 wasn't an issue at all. They did a great job so far with it. Im on an E9 OLED.

Why do I keep seeing this posted, those settings suck .

DTM and -8 on highlights? No thanks

That guy likes crazy settings. He did a similar thing with Uncharted 🙂 Of course, it's his preference, nothing wrong with setting the game and TV the way he liked it.

For me - I use HGiG TV setting with everything set in-game to default zeros. If I considered the image dim, I'd change the in-game settings, but I think the picture is really bright and looks great and doesn't need DTM.

Yeah, of course go for whatever you prefer.

Image looks great with very little messing around to me.

Shimmering in Performance mode is too much in this game. Will have to stick to Quality, unfortunately.

I was swapping back and forth like mad the first hour but once I got to the first open area I put it at 60 and never looked bavk

Yes, it's not a big deal when you actually play the game. It looks great in both modes. Of course, for those that would rather record parts of the screen with their phone, I can see how this can be an issue 🙂
No need to be dismissive of other people's issues. It's probably really noticeable while playing and they are just recording parts of the screen to show off the issue.

CX here. I can't imagine playing this at 30 so I'll deal with the shimmer for now. Shit feels insanely choppy on quality.

I just played the intro in 30fps quality and it was very smooth for 30. I'm afraid to try 60fps because typically I like 60fps better but this game just looks so good at 30fps.

are you trolling ? Happy for you if you don't have problem, but be respectful to other that have problem.

I did some testing for the fun, force 1080p on Ps5, problem still there but it's less noticable. I also remove 120hz auto mode be sure it wasn't the problem, still the same shimmering everywhere around. Quality mode, yeah look amazing, but when the camera move heeeeeeeeee. Someone post that he don't have that problem with TU8000, a 60hz panel. Could be a problem with 120/240 + oled panel ?

Performance mode looks rough. I'm actually surprised that it looks this bad. I may have to settle for 30fps… but I think PS5 could do a better job. Maybe they'll patch in a better mode someday.

I'll quote an old Falcon Northwest slogan :
"Framerate is life"

Also.. I'm at a stage in my gaming life where minimizing input latency is my number one priority. Input lag is the number one enemy of a real connection with your actions in the game. I'll do anything I can to avoid it.. so high frame-rates will always win.

Game is beautiful but annoyingly it does not support HGIG, cant understand considering its 1st party.

What? Is this true?

The shimmering in performance mode seems to be due to inadequate anti aliasing. Maybe they had to disable it to keep a steady 60fps.

Either they drop the resolution to 1440p and enable AA or drop the framerate to 40fps, keep the resolution at 1800p, and enable AA.

Either of those options could potentially solve the shimmering in performance mode.

Quality mode with the motion blur set to low. Looks absolutely fucking insane. 30fps is rough at first but you get used to it after playing a bit.

Honestly 30fps is not that bad. I don't know how it feels so smooth but kudos to them. Most 30fps games feel like garbage.

I tried motion blur but hated it. I hate it in general though.

Changed my mind and switched to Performance almost right away. I've just gotten so used to everything I play on PS5 running at 60fps. The shimmering is really the only noticeable change during gameplay, but it just feels so much better all around.

I do wish Photo Mode would switch to Quality when you activated it, though.

Shimmering to that extent has to be a bug
Usually shimmering happens when moving character or camera. Here jt happens even when it's not moving. That's odd
