Good review and shame about the AI on the highest diff. On the one hand it just avoids the need to restart when deep into a mission after flubbing something that calls for an alert, on the other it breaks immersion when the AI just forgets an intrusion and doesn't escalate security or protections.

The series should enforce new layers of challenge if the player is identified. Hiding in a bush for a couple min and resuming as if nothing happened on the highest diff is kind of bleh indeed.

Yeah totally. They need to strike a balance. A video game with true stealth might be unplayable. BUT I think for a game that is trying to be the ultimate stealth mission, I think they should offer a difficulty that nears it as much as possible. I should not be able to murder a bunch of people in front of everyone, run around the corner, switch out my disguise, and give it five minutes and everyone just acts like noting has happened.

I think Skyfall launched Bond into a different level of cultural interest. A Bond game is going to sell gangbusters.
at the same time, the reasons there wasn't a Skyfall video game was likely because of what happened to the wonderful and brilliant Bizarre Creations with Blood Stone (thanks activision), there's no real guarantee a Bond game will just sell

no matter how awesome Skyfall was, it was awesome 9 years ago

Yep, no problem having the AI reset on normal or even Hard. But Master Assassin needs consequences and improvisation.

The idea that protected individuals can be thrown into a saferoom, evacuated under a timer, or suddenly have enough guards to cause an untenable gunfight would intrigue me far more. It would truly test the players ability to react to mistakes or feel truly satisfaction upon executing a perfect plan without disruption. Bummed this isn't the case as you stated.

I enjoy stealth games but I've never played the Hitman series. My exposure to stealth is really MGS, Splinter Cell, and Last of Us (kind of counts), so what am I looking at with the Hitman games here? I'd assume more like Splinter Cell or am I missing the mark here?

I really want to play this game but I don't own a next-gen console just yet. Are there any reviews for the Xbox One or PS4 version?

None. That's what makes Hitman special, it's it's own unique twist on stealth, being based in disguises and social stealth more than hiding.

Out of those, I guess it's like the bank level of Chaos Theory, open ended and with many ways of achieving your objectives.

That Vice review has me a little concerned. Hopefully there are levels on par with Hokkaido and Sgail.

Yup, these reviews are unsurprising. I rarely pre-order games but I did it for this because it was such a safe bet. Hyped to dig into it tomorrow.

Very nice reviews.

It's interesting. Some of the lower scores seem to find the loss of some flexibility in the aid of story to be frustrating, yet you have editors at GamesBeat lauding how replayable the game is. Hopefully that loss doesn't rear its head too often.

Just picked this up with the confirmation that PC progress will carry over - a pre-emptive treat as the next few weeks of work are going to be pretty mental.

The first time I've actually ever bought something full-price on EGS after a couple of years of free games and voucher discounts lol...

All of those games are much more action heavy than Hitman. Hitman is more of a puzzle sandbox, more disguises than hiding, more realistic environments, etc.

The closest game format analogy is probably like each Hitman level is a Ground Zeroes. Large non-linear maps with multiple objectives.

As I expected. Good game but kinda the same compared to the first two, dragging the formula without big innovations.

Gonna buy it though I am good with that. Have a discount coupon. Not worth full price for me.

I think what makes HM special is that it's secretly a puzzle game hiding inside of a 3rd person action game. Shooting is not the point. Played at it's utmost you'll almost never fire a shot. Sometimes you won't even directly kill anyone- It's about manipulating people & the environment into Rube Goldberg contrivances.

They're a different kind of beast but absolutely one of my favourite stealth games. Each level is like a puzzle box to work out, the first time I play one will be like a tourist and an opportunist, then replaying the levels to find the best routes and ways to take out your target and no one else. Then there's extra challenges in getting silent assassin (no witnesses, no being seen etc) and then trying to do the mission without even taking on a disguise. These latest games facilitate this process by giving you more level unlocks the more you do, like starting positions or disguises. You can basically add in extra roleplaying which is fun, if you want to be an assassin who only uses poison or a sniper rifle, those are possible. It's lots of fun going through the levels and finding new possibilities and accidents to set up.

cheers scottstephan I spent about 5 minutes trying to remember the name Rube Goldberg and gave up xD

Gotta be honest, I loathe missions with non-target objectives or targets whose identities you have to figure out. It's fun the first time but afterwards it just becomes a chore. Things like the Maelstrom in Mumbai or the clues in Whittleton Creek are not enjoyable on repeat playthroughs. If I have to "figure out" who the killer is every time I play Dartmoor, I'm gonna be pretty disappointed.

So most say it has the best levels in the trilogy, and a couple say it has the worst levels? Pretty interesting and I wonder where Hitman fans generally will fall under.

Apparently one of the other levels also just throws you into it with absolutely no objectives and you just have to figure it out too

If it's anything like Mumbai then it wont be too bad once you figure out one of the tricks/tells to locate the target and it only adds an extra step to the process.

I mean we basically heard exactly the same with Hitman 2, some people preferred H1, others liked H2 more. No surprise here, it's going to come down to levels you like.

I personally thought H1 hit higher highs (Sapienza) and lower lows (Colorado) while H2 stayed more consistent throughout.

Hitman is less of an action stealth game and more like a third person puzzle game, every level is a clockwork machine that you can manipulate and it will adapt to your actions in various ways. Shooting a firearm is almost always the least preferred solution to a challenge you might have since it can quickly come back to haunt you, learning to identify the intentional weaknesses in the level in terms of security systems and NPC routing/behavior is the name of the game.

Dressing up as a ninja and killing all of your targets unseen in Hokkaido is immensely satisfying.

I'm SO GLAD this game is being so loved and this trilogy is getting the praise it deserves after the first game underperforming and the company almost shutting down!
I'm extremely hyped for this and to play everything in VR as a send-off!
Let's goooooooo!

It sounds like there are more of those objectives that aren't just assassinate so-and-so. Like escorting that guy in the Isle is Sgail or breaking into the vault in the bank.

Personally, I'm fine with those. It sounds like there are more variations to them which is good but I get how people found them too restrictive compared to just good old killing.

I picked Hitman 2 Gold a week ago and im fucking loving it. I will eventually buy 3, just not sure if I should wait until the expansions are bundled, or at least the raytracing patch (please come out on consoles). I have plenty to play still.

Going by that IGN review sounds like the VR mode is more novelty than a properly done implementation which I suspected given it being hamstrung by the DS4 (even with 6dof). As someone getting it on PC this doesn't make me as salty now given the exclusivity :P

One of the best experiences I've had in VR this past year was playing Hitman 2 (with 1's levels integrated) in VR via HelixVision. No sacrificing resolution or details and obviously the ability to play it on a much better headset. I hope someone manages to get 3 working with it or knock on wood we'll have an Alien: Isolation situation where someone will manage to get native VR support working based on something in the game files but I realize that isn't likely.

Good to hear the levels are generally more expansive, and the areas seem more up my alley thematically than the ones in 2.

any psvr impressions?

It's got its fair share of jank but what they've done with the hardware is worthy of praise. It's one of the best looking PSVR games there is.

Hitman 3 VR Review - A (Mostly) Clean Kill

Does IO Interactive’s VR debut hit the mark? Find out in our Hitman 3 VR review! I’ll admit, I thought Agent 47 had got in over his head on this one. VR seems like a natural fit for the Hitman series, but bolting it onto the side of

As expected, the biggest issue is the reliance on the Dualshock 4 to control 47.

Been looking forward to this so much.

Just wish I could find an XSX. Really didn't want to start these new games on the old consoles.

The problem is that these elements are cool on the first run but annoying later on. And since hitman is super replayable, that is a problem. We'll see how they handled this in Hitman 3.

Great reviews, I'm glad they simplified how the releases work. I know I own a bunch of levels of 1 but can't find them on PSN. Goty edition includes season 1, does that mean there's a season 2? All pretty confusing. Is 2 as bad or more straight forward?

So I have no idea what to get this on

PC: Fuck epic
PS5: Does it have dual sense features?
XBbox Series X: Better graphics or just the same as the PS5?
