Jesus, just give them all the awards.

I was not expecting to be crying during the 5 minute 'montage of real life images and text about what happened' but i did and a lot of award should go its way. So relevant to today with the war on truth.
Yeah I kinda spent the last fifteen minutes of the episode in tears. The closing of the trial and then the montage just destroyed me in a way I didn't think it would.

The cost of believing in lies is pretty damn high.

The US at the moment is following in the footsteps of the Soviet Union. I hope we don't have our own Chernobyl like disaster.

This series has convinced me that I'd rather take a well put together mini series over a seasonal show. Short, concise and impactful is the way to go.

Some would say we already have: 9/11, Mass shootings, racial tensions, etc.

Is there a reason why Legasov's specific response to the KGB deputy is "they should put that on our money?"

It sounds like a reference that went over my head.

"Why worry about something that isn't going to happen" plays directly into why the reactor control rods were tipped with graphite despite the chance for something catastrophic happening. Why worry about them leading to an explosion when it isn't going to happen?

The podcast goes into the amount of "creative decisions" they went with in the last episode, which is more than the rest of the show.

Legasov was not at the trial, and didn't give his speech, per se. He did over the course of time, and was mostly ignored by the rest of their scientific community. It was his suicide that pushed them enough to push for change, as they couldn't explain away why this renown scientist killed himself 2 years to the minute of Chernobyl (and his recorded memoirs)

What an ending.

What do you say about such a well put together mini series like this? It's worth all the praise.

If people only take from this socialism is bad they missed the point.

Please tell me how it's possible for the final season to explode.

Yep, just give this show all of the awards and accolades. Definitely one of the GOAT mini-series.

Incredibly gripping final episode.

Oh my god the amount of people (not here) that are only seeing this show as "Socialism = bad" ... it makes me not want to show this to my dad, he'll be the same way.

The show practically beating the audience over the head about listening to scientific research and reality over blind loyalty to a party system.

very smart people: AHA FUCKING SOCIALIST LOL
very smart people: so any way, climate change is bullshit because...

Was Dyatlov as much of a cartoonish asshole in real life? I get they used him to be the symbol for Russian arrogance, but cmon...
And lol when Valery actually dropped his presentation card during the trial. Show veered to far into the character cliche of a scientist who's right but may be ignored because he's awkward/ too passionate".
Show was well done but heavy handed at times

He was that much of an asshole. He never admitted he fucked up, and even before his death he said "everyone would have done the same as me".

Which is hysterical because the entire damn thesis of the show, ie - "What is the cost of lies?", is quite literally the opening and closing lines of the series. The show beats it into the head of the viewer the cost of ignoring scientists, facts, and reason and instead choosing to believe the government's convenient lies.

Climate change? Why worry about something that isn't happening? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I watched a documentary that was made years ago on Youtube about it and Dyatlov was not too far off in it. Might read up on some of this.

Every account I have read of the man portrayed him as an overbearing berating asshole. Yes. Once again the show probably downplayed the reality of the person as to not come across heavy handed.
wow this guy sucks then

Final episode was amazing. Jared Harris and his fucking awesome performance. I wasn't expecting to cry at the final couple of minutes but those men and women risked their lives to save a bunch of people and for the truth. I'm glad that Vasily's wife was able to get pregnant again.

Anybody else know of a limited mini-series on par as this one? I wanna watch something like this again.

Yup, the parallels to today is what makes an already infuriating show (in a good way, drama/narrative-wise) even more infuriating and resonant.

The cost of believing in lies is pretty damn high.
I do hope that was most people's take-away. Lies -- small or big, state secrets or in your own home -- carry a price and a burden, and will be collected upon sooner or later. They cast a shadow of pain and regret.

While it's easy to extrapolate the lesson and apply it to matters like climate change and current political administrations that operate outside of reality, it's equally important to apply it to your personal relationships, work, and lives. People lie to others every day, and maybe most scarily...to themselves. Because as was said, comfortable lies are easier than dealing with or explaining difficult truths about our own struggles. And so they are easier to convince ourselves of and hold on tightly to. But the cost of doing so is often wasted lives, wasted time, wasted lifetime, missed opportunities, broken dreams.

I'd encourage everyone to take some time and think on these things and how they reign true in our own lives. To deal with the Chernobyl disasters that are building up inside of us all.

Band of Brothers? That's a different beast though. I don't think anything quite matches what this show pulls off.

A couple of months ago I was diagnosed as Bipolar II. Long story short, I started medication treatment which has helped me incredibly. I haven't been able to cry on this medication, even to things that used to make me overly sad and tearful. No tears would fall even when I wanted them to. I cried tonight.

I'm actually in the same boat. I take antidepressants and due to a medication change I was emotionally drained and haven't cried in a while. Tonight was the first time after a while, thanks for recommending Band of Brothers.

Obviously there will be awards to go around, and they'll be well deserved.

But let's hope there is a deeper recognition of the suffering and sacrifice, and that people understand the importance of worrying about things that aren't going to happen before it's too late and they happen.

Hello, I'm from the future here to tell you that September 11, 2001 by the writer of Meet the Spartans is the best mini-series of 2020.
