Here are the hundreds of classic movies people can stream on HBO Max

HBO Max is getting hundreds of classic Warner Bros. movies, Turner films, and more.

That's an incredible line up of films even without the Criterion offerings. I can't think of another 'general audience' streaming platform that has a slate of films like that.

And I love that even Turner Films chips in with two films, one of which is the Regular Show Movie.

Bless.

Hmm...my Criterion Channel sub just expired and I was planning to re-up, but now I wonder if it makes sense to if they're going to overlap with HBO Max.

someoen should ask the guy who created regular show to show some special on HBO Max and yes I know he has a show called close enough also.

I want regular show back

AT&T is really fucking this up. This service seems so much better than Disney plus was at lunch, yet I doubt they'll even get a quarter of the sign ups

yeah just classics

"Some of those movies will be Warner Bros. blockbusters, like films from the DC Universe (The Dark Knight, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Aquaman, Shazam to name a few) or The Matrix trilogy. It's unclear how many are exclusive to HBO Max (like the Studio Ghibli collection), but The Verge has asked WarnerMedia for clarification."

So we sub to Now directly through HBO. Are they just transitioning HBO Now apps to Max, do we have to get a separate channel app and use the same log in or ...? Do we know?

It's crazy seeing so many significant Fox, Disney, Universal, etc films on that list from existing licensing deals. I wonder how long before those licensing deals dry up and when they stop licensing those IPs out in order to not support their competitor's service.

I was going to say a stellar line-up of movies from rivals... especially surprising from Universal with Peacock launching in two months, but remembered a lot of these are probably pre-existing HBO deals that WB gets to leverage.

Man I'm so excited for this service. The lineup is stacked. I've been making an effort to go through some classic films and this is going to make it a lot easier. I kind of like that this seems to be a little movie heavier at the moment.

It certainly is a great way to launch a service though. It'll make their service content look more diverse than what it normally would be and they can then slowly remove stuff without a lot of people realizing.

I still need to see what the video streaming quality is going to be like. They need to drastically improve it over HBO Now for me to pay 15. The fact that it won't be part of Apple Channels apparently is a huge bummer to me.

Space, Man
I watch tv through amazon fire, so how do I get the 11.99 deal? I don't see any options through Hulu or amazon. I currently sub to hbo through amazon and pay 14.99$ a month.

edit and finally, Batman rises!

I wouldn't hold out much hope given their standard PR response when asked about 4K support, which leads me to believe this is just a reskinned HBO NOW App, with the same streaming capabilities. No Apple or Prime channel support is enough evidence for me.

Hoping I get this through Xfinity, doesn't look like they've announced anything yet.

This platform's already more varied and exciting than D+ is. Miyazaki + these classic titles + HBO stuff is a powerhouse.

So what happens if you have HBO via Hulu atm?

Honestly it's still kind of unknown. If you're billed directly through Hulu you get upgraded for free, but I can't find any information on if Hulu themselves will be hosting HBO Max content, or if it'll be like Apple where the distributor bills you for normal HBO and you use that login to access the HBO Max app. The press release from Warner gave absolutely no details.

WarnerMedia and Hulu have reached a distribution agreement that will make HBO Max, WarnerMedia's best-in-class streaming offering, available to Hulu subscribers when it launches on May 27, 2020. A valued distributor of our networks for a number of years, Hulu joins our growing roster of distribution partners that will offer HBO Max on day one, giving customers choice in where and how they access the offering's 10,000 hours of curated content.

That's the entire press release.

Before the Apple deal got confirmed as "Sign into the HBO Max app with your Apple ID" I would have said of course Hulu would be hosting it like they are right now, but now I'm less convinced.

So either way you'll get HBO Max, but it's not known where it'll be. To me this is why the lack of a deal with Amazon or Roku is so important. If it was streaming from Apple or Hulu then you could just download those apps on your Fire TV or Roku and it's no big deal, but since all those companies have made a big stink about AT&T not making a deal with them, that says to me that they want all Max content to be in their own app, with 50 different ways to log in, and not anywhere else.

Nice, thanks for the thorough answer. The last line "(...)giving customers choice in where and how they access the offerings 10,000 hours of curated content" does kinda make it seem like it'll seamlessly feed the content into Hulu, but guess we'll see.

Welp I ended up signing up a week earlier than I wanted to, oh well. HBO Now is still pretty decent as it is now, but I can't wait for that supercharged Max upgrade.

I think HBO Max and Netflix will be a great 1-2 punch for the average adult. I'll get Disney Plus once in a while for Marvel shows. But overall I'm much more interested in the wider variety of content that I'll be getting from the other two that is also more adult focused.
